I rushed out of the room and ran through the hallway as if my life depended on it. It does, actually. I need to retrieve the herb and hurry back here so I can leave with my pack.
Mercury! I hope she's back by my side.
I walked inside the room and moved to the closet. I retrieved a jean trouser with a hoodie, something I can cover my head with so that anyone wouldn't recognise me from afar.
The door opened behind me suddenly, but I didn't bother to look up since I knew who it was.
“We are leaving now!” I announced it suddenly.
“Leaving where? I thought we were leaving by midnight. It's just a few minutes after seven.
I turned to look at her as I tried to wear the damn trouser.
“I need to get the herbs for the King before we leave.”
Mercury regarded me for a moment and suddenly hurried towards the closet. She retrieved a black trouser and a black hoodie as well without asking questions.
That was actually good of her because I was expecting her to bombard me with questions.
“Is there anything else we need?” She asked as she put on her hoodie.
I was done dressing. I packed my hair in a ponytail and used the hood over my head.
“A horse. I haven't shifted. So, I won't be fast,” I explained.
“I will get the horse ready. The whole palace is in chaos because of the Alpha. So, it will be easy to sneak out, in fact,” she explained. “I will be outside the palace wall in a few minutes. Meet me there.”
I nodded once and watched her walk out of the room.
I released a sigh. I'm so anxious and worried. But it doesn't matter. Whatever I do, like my mother has said, is going to be the best.
I'm only going to follow my heart, nothing more. And I'm only going to save the Alpha this once, well, because he kept his promise.
That doesn't mean he won't die after I shift.
I stepped out after a few minutes when Mercury had left.
Mercury was right. It was easy to move out of the palace without being questioned. But maybe they would have if it was Mercury and I trying to leave the palace wall.
I waited exactly where Mercury said I should, but she wasn't around.
My heart was beating faster, but I tried to assure myself. I'm doing the right thing.
Fuck it! It doesn't matter. Because at this point, it feels like I'm going crazy.
“Autumn!” A soft voice called suddenly.
I whipped my head towards the location where the voice came from. Mercury was walking towards me while pulling a horse.
Good grief. I mentally released a sigh of relief.
“Let's hurry up! We don't have much time left!”
We climbed on the horse, with me at the back while Mercury took the rein.
“Where are we going anyway?”
I laughed. “Our packhouse. The herb that will serve as the antidote for the Alpha is there.”
Mercury nodded once and kicked the horse.
The horse started to run, but Mercury had to kick it again so that it could go faster. The faster we got there, the better.
We reached our place in no time, thanks to Mercury's skill in riding.
I must have concluded and thought there would not be a change of mind. But looking at the ruins of my pack house, I'm suddenly having doubts in my heart.
It almost looked like there had never been anyone here. Alpha Xavier did this to us. Why then am I here to save him?
I looked up suddenly and saw as the kids played around. They were full of happiness, but Xavier ruined it for them.
“Autumn!” A voice called suddenly, jerking me out of my thoughts and making the images I have created disappear.
I looked up at Mercury with a confused expression. I was lost at this point.
“We need to get whatever we came here for and leave as fast as possible.”
I closed my eyes for a moment as I thought about my decision all over.
If I can't even bear Xavier dying. What makes me think I would be able to kill him?
“Autumn, is something wrong?”
I released a sigh of frustration. I need to decide. I need to make a decision now! This is so difficult. Being an Alpha is more difficult than I thought. I'm supposed to abandon my feelings, but it looks so difficult.
This is what I want. If it's really my fate to kill Xavier, then I will. Besides, he said he would offer his head to me as an atonement for his sin.
One thing I've noticed about the Alpha recently is that he keeps to his promise. I will rest on that.
I opened my eyes and stared at confused Mercury. “Let's get the herbs!” I announced and rushed towards the garden.
There were a lot of vases here. Some were broken, while some were not. I retrieved some plants and wrapped them in the nylon I saw around. I turned to Mercury again.
“Here, hold it and protect it with your life. I will drive us back.”
Mercury took the plant from me with a short nod.
We got on the horse, with me handling the rein now.
But we barely rode for a few minutes when my nose twitched as different scents got mixed with ours.
The horse neighed suddenly, and I pulled to a stop.
“Is something wrong?” Mercury demanded.
“We are not alone,” I muttered as my gaze searched around me. “Let's get down. The horse will refuse to go if it has sensed danger already.”
Mercury got down first, then I did.
“What do we do now?” Mercury enquired, but it didn't seem like she was at all scared.
Just as I opened my mouth to say something, rogues in their wolf form jumped out of the woods.
They hesitated as they regarded us. They were_twelve.
Maybe a large number for us since I haven't even shifted, but with my witch power, I should be able to take them down.
“We fight!” I muttered.
Mercury jumped in front of me, already shifted. She howled into the air before she attacked the rogues.
My gaze searched around me quickly for a weapon. I could as well pull down these trees.
Suddenly, I was pushed to the side, and rough hands grabbed me.
“Be careful!” A deep, familiar voice reached me.
I looked up, and I'm surprised at who I'm staring at. It's the guy I met around Magic Town the day I learnt about my power.
“Mercury_” I muttered as I remembered she was the only one fighting.
“Don't worry, we've got her covered,” he explained and turned towards where the fight was taking place.
I followed the path of his gaze and realised she's not the only one fighting the rogues now. I can count seven of them helping Mercury.
“Are you alright?” the man asked suddenly, his arms stretched in the air for me.
I regarded it for a moment before I grabbed it.
He pulled me up with it.
But suddenly, I zoomed off.
I'm not in the forest now. Instead, I'm in a dark room. It was exactly the place I saw in my dream, except that someone was tending to the girl on the bed.
At this moment, it didn't look like I was the one on the bed like the other time. It merely looked like I was a director on a movie set.
A man leaned against the door and watched the girls on the bed. The guy was tall, but I couldn't see his face because he was in the darkness.
When I was back in the forest, I was in the man’s arm, and my breath was coming very fast.
I suddenly felt strength drain off me.
