I woke up suddenly. My heart was coming faster like I was running, like I was forced inside the water.
"Are you alright?" a familiar voice asked.
I looked at Mercury as I tried to steady my heavy breathing.
I nodded once, and my gaze searched around me. "Where am I?"
"You fainted. So, the man that helped us last night brought us here," she explained.
Headache set in, and I placed a hand over my head in an attempt to make it go away.
Then, realisation dawned on me.
I turned towards Mercury again. "What do you mean by last night? How long have I been here?"
Mercury sighed. "You've been like this throughout the night. You didn't wake up, despite how much I tried. Instead, you were muttering something inaudible," she explained.
Damn! I can't believe I slept through the night. I was supposed to go back to the palace so that I could leave with the moon-like pack. How could I have lost consciousness at this time?
I got up. "We need to leave now!" I said with urgency to my word.
Despite the headache, I rushed out of bed.
A man suddenly materialised out of nowhere and was standing in front of the door.
I jerked back before I could realise it was the man from last night.
I released a sigh of relief. "Good grief! You scared me!"
The man laughed. "I'm sorry about that. I just think you should take this before you leave," he muttered.
I looked down at the tray in his hand. "What's that?"
"Soup. It serves as both food and medicine," he explained and moved closer.
I took the cup from him, then remembered I'm supposed to be cautious of what I take in.
With Xavier on sick bed, I can be targeted at any time.
But then, this man in front of me doesn't know me. There's no way he would plot evil. Besides, he saved me yesterday. Would he want me to die and still rescue me?
I took it and sipped in a little.
"Thank you, Mr. _____."
"Have you forgotten me already?"
I tried to smile. "I do; I mean, I remember your face, but I don't seem to remember your name."
"I'm Lucas. And I didn't tell you my name last time," he said with a smile.
My face flushed instantly with embarrassment.
I took his hand and remember he did this the first time too, but I didn't take his hand.
"We will have to see later because I have to go now."
"Alright. I hope we can see each other again though," he said with a smile.
I reciprocated it. "We will, but I have to leave now."
He nodded once. "But wait," he looked up suddenly and reached over to touch my hair. He pulled back after a while. "It's nothing. You can leave, but you are yet to tell me your name."
"Alright. I'm Aut_" I stopped almost immediately.
No, I shouldn't say my real name until I'm finally out of Xavier's territory.
"I'm Gwen. And I promise to remember you the next time we see each other. Thank you so much for helping me yesterday," I said honestly.
He smiled, showing me his perfect set of teeth. "You are welcome," he muttered and stepped aside for me.
I walked out with Mercury.
Our horse was in front of the house. I turned to look at Mercury as I remembered something.
"Where's the herbs?"
"It's with me, safe!" She assured me.
I nodded once. "Alright, come on, Mercury. We hope we aren't too late already."
"I hope so," Mercury muttered and got on the horse behind me.
I rode faster towards the packhouse.
What happened to me yesterday? Why did I go off like that? And what were the images I saw?
These days, I don't even understand what's happening to me. I wonder if the elders left or not. They would have waited for me.
Gosh, how could I disappoint them?
We got to the packhouse in no time, and we hurried inside. I stopped suddenly and looked at Mercury. "Find the elders. I need to know if they left already or if they are still around."
Mercury bowed slightly and walked away.
My heart was beating faster as I made my way towards Xavier's room. I hope I'm not late.
The guards bowed when I got near. I ignored them and entered the room.
Rick was kneeling in front of Xavier's bed and crying.
My leg wobbled underneath me. My heart skipped several beats.
"Is he_" I couldn't complete the sentence. It felt like I was robbed of the words I wanted to say.
Rick turned to look at me, with a shock expression on his face. "How are you here?"
"Is he alright? Is he dead?" I was anxious.
The only thing I wanted to hear from him was how Xavier was faring.
Rick looked away with a forced smile. "He's fine, for now. I couldn't find the herbs. I still don't believe my Alpha will die," he sobbed quietly.
I released the breath I didn't even know I was holding.
I moved closer and dropped the plant in front of him.
"These are the herbs. Give it to the doctor and let him make an antidote as fast as possible.
Rick looked up at me again, with confusion written all over his face. "What?"
He looks like he has a lot to ask.
"I had to go find the herbs before I leave. We were actually attacked on our way by some rogues. That was why we came late."
Rick got up, still shocked. "I thought you wanted to kill the king. And besides, I've already given you permission to leave. Why are you still doing this?"
I looked at Xavier. "Everyone will pay for their sins, including Xavier, but it's not yet time. Xavier needs to wake up now. So, do it fast!"
Though, that's right. As much as this is a great opportunity for me, I still need to think of other possibilities. I am yet to shift. It looks like troubles loom ahead.
Rick nodded once. "I will get the herbs to the doctor now," he announced and hurried out of the room.
I waited. I wanted to wait and see Xavier take the drugs, especially since he's not going to be able to take it on his own. I might have to help him like I did the other time.
But I need to hurry up. I need to meet with my mom and dad.
I reached out to Xavier and felt his body. His body is getting cold. I don't know if that's a good or bad sign.
The door opened again.
"Hurry up!"
Rick and the physician moved closer.
I looked up at them. "Is the antidote ready?"
Rick nodded once. "It is," he responded.
"Then give it to me. I will make sure he swallows it."
The physician bowed slightly and stretched a cup containing a liquid to me.
I took it and proceeded with my plan, just as I had done with him yesterday.
When I was done, the physician left, not after convincing us that he would get better.
"Thank you so much, Autumn," Rick said suddenly, shocking me.
I stood up to look at him. "You are welcome," I said with a straight face and walked out of the room.
"Luna!" Mercury called from afar.
I moved closer to her. "Is something wrong?"
She nodded once. "The moon-like pack has been locked up."
What!
