Everyone was overjoyed. I hadn't expected them to accept me. I mean, I have always prepared for the day their responsibility would be mine.
But it felt like the day will never come.
I and the elders settled down while the party continued. Everyone was happy, but I knew I still had to prove it to them that I was capable.
“Why didn't you tell them about your silver wolf though?” Ben asked suddenly.
I shook my head briefly. “It's not yet time.I will show that to them with evidence. When I shift, they can know about it.”
Frederick nodded once, with a smile. “That's nice. But how did you do it? How come we were not killed? We were on the verge of death, but suddenly, we were free again.”
“Yes,” June chimed in. “I was shocked that they suddenly announced we would be released. How did you convince the King?” she asked.
“Well, I thought the King was unconscious. I thought he was poisoned.”
I nodded once. “He was, actually, but he woke up with the help of the antidote I secured for him. Freeing you is a way of being grateful.”
The elders exchanged gazes suspiciously.
“Does that mean you are not going to fight the Alpha?” It was Ben that asked.
I knew they were going to ask that actually. If they knew I was already wavering, they would think I'm weak.
But maybe I am.
“He will die like I have told you, but it's not going to be now. It is clear that someone wants us dead. Without the King's help, we would have died, by the way. So, I need to shift first before anything else will happen,” I explained.
Frederick looked at me. “You promised?”
I nodded once, without hesitation. “I promised.”
And a problem is debt. That means I will have to kill Xavier in the near future, whether I like it or not. Well, he deserves it.
“Well, I need the maids now. Can I get them tonight? We need to protect the king now. We can't allow him to be poisoned again.”
They all nodded slightly.
“Well, they are ready. They can in fact follow you when you are leaving.”
“Then it has to be now. You guys can continue to party, but I have to leave now,” I announced.
Frederick nodded once and stood. “I will get the girls then,” he offered and walked away.
I turned to look at June. “What about Dylan?”
June smiled. “He's getting prepared.”
I furrowed my brows. “What for?”
June laughed. “As your new personal guard. You are the Alpha now, and you should be protected, pending the time you shift. We can't allow anything to happen to you,” she explained.
I laughed. Dylan can be funny.
“I'm not going to allow that, though!”
How can I take it? Why should my brother be the one to protect me?
June shrugged slightly. “Let's see if you can change his mind, though.”
I stepped out in the next few minutes, with Mercury and five girls. We started towards Xavier's room to see Rick. The earlier, the better for us.
Fortunately, Rick was in his room this time.
“So, three people will prepare the king's food while these two will stay here. Increase their positions so that they can override other maids,” I suggested.
Rick nodded slightly. “I will do that immediately. Thank you so much,” he muttered and turned to look at the girls. “Follow me,” he muttered and stepped out with them.
I walked back to Xavier’s bedroom. The physician was inside and trying to make Xavier drink the antidote. It wasn't a success though, just like the other time.
I watched them for a moment as the physician did his thing.
“Give it to me. I will do the rest. You can go now.”
The physician complied and walked out.
I did like I have been doing. I would take some of the antidote and kiss him while pouring the content into his mouth.
No matter how much my heart waves, I've promised to kill Xavier when it's time. There's nothing I can do now. I have no choice.
Xavier will need to die even after escaping a near death.
Well, it's none of my concern. He deserves it anyway. He should have believed me. He should have listened to my father. He shouldn't have massacred my pack and reduced us to half our size.
Just because he prevented his Alphas from killing us won't clear up the fact that he has trued to kill us as well. No, not that he tried to. He did kill us. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't even be in this situation.
So, a favour of his can't close that chapter. Everyone has lost one or two people from the war. I can't forgive Xavier. If I forgive him, what would that make me? How would I look at my people? How do I continue being their Alpha?
Even though this is hard for me, I still have to do it.
And that's why he must die. He will, surely. I will reject him and kill him.
When I reject him, I will be free from the slave of this evil matebond.
I woke up suddenly and realised I had fallen asleep while I was taking care of Xavier. My eyes widened almost instantly as I noticed Xavier wasn't on the bed.
Or is this me dreaming?
The door creaked open behind me suddenly. That could be him. Maybe he's awake.
I hurried up and followed the footsteps out of the room. It was truly him.
He stepped out into the garden. At first, I thought he had something to do until he stared up at the sky.
“I can scent you,” he muttered suddenly, shocking me.
He didn't look at me as he made the statement, but I knew he was talking to me. I mean, there's no one else around. I stepped out from where I thought I was hiding.
“Your scent is overwhelming. It looks like it's the only thing I can ever smell,” he muttered.
His voice sounded shaking, and I wondered if he's truly fine.
I didn't know what to say. So, I stared up at the stars as well.
“Thank you,” he said suddenly and finally looked at me. “Thank you for saving me,” he said it like he meant it. “But I still want to ask why you did so.”
“Well, I'm as curious as you are,” I responded. “I wonder why you save us.”
His eyes weren't leaving me. “Because you deserve it. The moon-like pack was falsely accused. I realised that too late. You guys deserved to be redeemed.”
I found myself swallowing hard. I looked away quickly before I started having thoughts. He's affecting me in a way I don't want.
“But I'm still curious as to why you got the herbs for me. You could have taken it as a chance to avenge. Or don't you think I deserve to die?”
I felt his eyes still on me, and it made me uncomfortable.
“I don't know. I merely followed my instinct, but it didn't mean you don't deserve to die, or I have forgiven you.”
He sighed and finally looked away.
“I'm just sticking to plan. Find Gwen and leave. Though it turned out I was right since someone desperately wants us gone. So, you will have to find the culprit if I want to leave.”
Silence descended between us. It stretched for a few minutes, and the only thing I could hear was the breeze as it blew past us.
“What_,” he started suddenly. “What can I do to make you forgive me?”
I was shocked. I didn't expect him to ask me that. I was forced to look at him. What is he doing?
“Autumn,” he called softly. “Tell me, I'm willing to know,” he persisted. His expression was soft and somehow angered me.
I scoffed. “What are you trying to do? There's nothing you can do to get back the lives of those you've killed.” My tone was unexpectedly harsh, even though that wasn't my intention.
He seemed to swallow hard. "If_,” he paused briefly. “What if I die?”
What!
He attempted to smile, but he failed. “I said I would give you my head on a platter. I keep to my words. I will let you be the one to do it. But it has to be after I find Gwen,” he said, looking away. “I will like to join my mother.”
