Xavier
I opened my eyes suddenly. I glanced at the wall clock to check how long I had been asleep.
Just for four hours. It's dawn now. I feel better now.
When I struggled to meet with the Alphas’ meeting the other time, I was still feeling a weakness deep down in me.
But it's all gone now.
I sat up and looked at Autumn. She was sitting beside my bed, with her head on my bed. She must have fallen asleep while watching me.
Though I wondered why she didn't return to her room. She knew I was awake already. We met last night after all.
I regarded her a moment and marvelled at how pretty she looked while asleep. Her lips were slightly parted, red, and plum. It was inviting.
Looking away, I tried to get out of bed without disturbing her. She stirred though, but she didn't wake up.
The door opened suddenly, and Rick walked inside. He hesitated slightly when he saw me, and his expression changed.
It looked like he was going to cry.
“You are awake!” He said softly.
I smiled. “I'm fine now. In fact, I've been awake since last night.”
Rick raised a brow. “Really?”
I nodded once. “I feel better now,” I assured him.
Rick looked behind me. “She's still here.”
I followed the path of his gaze to look at Autumn. I watched her for another moment, at how peaceful she looked asleep.
“She has been supportive. She made sure your food and water were successfully processed and tasted,” Rick explained.
Autumn was different. I know I've made a lot of mistakes in this life, but not trusting and believing Autumn is the one I've regretted.
I will always regret it, till my last breath since it looked like I would never be forgiven.
“She doesn't look at all like someone we should have made our enemy,” Rick was saying.
At last, it looks like Rick was starting to side with her.
“She was innocent,“ I admitted. “She shouldn't have shared in the punishments I laid out for myself,” I muttered and looked at Rick.
Rick had a raised brow. “What? You mean when you swore not to mark your fated mate?”
I scoffed at the ridiculous statement. “The moon goddess was obviously laughing when I was making the statement. I mean, Autumn had nothing to do with missing Gwen. The only crime she committed was having me as a mate. And now, I've placed her in a tight position.”
Rick’s expression mirrored confusion. “I don't understand that.”
I smiled. “Tell the maids to make Autumn's bed,” I ordered, ignoring his question.
Rick let it go, bowed slightly, and stepped out.
There's no way I'm telling him what I know.
I turned around to look at her again, briefly before I started towards her. With one swift movement,I scooped her up in my arms and stepped out of my room.
She stirred again, but she didn't open her eyes. All she has been through these days must be telling on her.
I started toward her room, trying my best to conceal the feeling stirring in my chest. The feeling to kiss her was so overwhelming. So, I avoided looking at her lips.
Even at that, my body seemed to be reacting to the fact that she was in my arms. The mate bond is too strong. It's messing with my head.
Just as I reached her room, two maids stepped out with Rick.
They bowed in front of me.
“The bed has been made,” Rick explained.
I walked inside the room and placed her in the middle of the bed. I pulled the blanket over her body and turned away quickly. I had barely taken three steps when I found myself turning back to her.
I carefully pulled off her black hair that was covering half of her face.
I regarded her for a moment, and my wolf leapt for joy inside me.
For the first time, I'm keeping something from Rick. There's no way I can tell him that Autumn is actually a witch and she has powers.
Last night wasn't the only time I was awake. I was awake when Autumn entered my room at first. I thought she probably changed her mind and was going to kill me.
I just wanted to see what she was up to, but what I heard was different and shocking.
Autumn wasn't only a witch; she has her wolf. It was the reason why she healed so fast after I had marked her. Like Rick had thought, I unlocked it.
That was why she saved me. She was looking for the right time. She needed to have all her powers before she would come at me.
But then she had no idea I had given up on this fight. Like I've told her, I'm going to let her kill me after all this is over, after I've found Gwen. And it has to be her and no one else. That will atone for my sin.
I closed my eyes a moment and pulled away from her. I eventually walked out of the room. Rick was still waiting in front of the door.
“Any updates on Philip?”
Rick shook his head. “It looks like he's being careful, especially after these recent activities. He hasn't made any move.”
He's quite smarter than I give him credit for.
I started forward, going towards my room. “The hunt festival is in three days. Amazing that no one is talking about it.”
“Well, I think we should postpone it,” Rick suggested.
I shook my head briefly. “That will never happen. The hunt festival has to happen. Call a meeting with the Alphas. We will discuss everything about it by evening.”
Rick nodded slightly.“I will do that. But are you really alright?”
I stopped to look at Rick. He looked bothered. Yet again, it pains me to see that I'm keeping something from him.
But he wouldn't understand the fact that I'm so tired of everything and would like to end it as soon as possible. If Rick knows what I plan to do to myself, he would stop it.
So, everything has to stay hidden for now.
“Alpha!” Someone yelled suddenly, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I looked up at my Gamma. “Is something wrong?”
He nodded once. “We have a situation. The girl that poisoned you is dead.”
What!
