Rick
What!
I looked at Xavier and saw the frozen expression on his face. He was too shocked to talk. It has been a while I've seen him look like this.
But then, these years have been the worst of our lives. These years and not even the few days that Gwen had gotten missing.
Because Xavier has suddenly assumed a new personality. He was two different people now.
He advanced forward, towards the prison, without a word.
I followed swiftly.
We entered the prison. The maid was already laid down outside the cell. Her eyes were closed, and there was no sign of violence.
I moved closer to examine her. She was truly gone and as cold as ice.
I turned to Xavier. “She's dead.”
“What's the cause of her death?”
“Well, we can't say, but the physician is on its way now. Perhaps he would be able to tell us. There was no sign of violence. So, it was a slow death and maybe painless,” Brown, the Gamma explained.
Xavier went silent immediately. It felt like he was thinking about it.
Suddenly, he turned around and punched the wall behind him. The area where he punched gave way, making a hole while some cracks appeared, leading up to the rest of the wall. Xavier just needs to hit it one more time, and the whole wall will give way.
“Xavier!” I called urgently because I feared he was going to do it again.
He didn't respond. Instead, he rested his head against the wall and took in a deep, ragged breath.
If the maid is dead, doesn't that mean we will lose Gwen forever? I mean, we have been walking in a circle all this while. These people seemed to be getting us at every corner.
At this moment, it looked like failure was imminent.
“Xavier,” I called again, softly this time. I had no idea what to do.
He turned to look at me with a hardened expression. “Plan changed, Rick.”
I felt my heart make a sudden thud. What can Xavier be planning? Xavier tends to do things without thinking whenever he is angry.
Xavier hesitated. “Gather the men, you and Brown. There will be a search on the festival day.”
My eyes widened with shock.
“What?”
“And there will be an arrest.”
“King Xavier_”
“Yes?”
“Whose arrest?”
“Philip.”
What?
Xavier released a sigh. “During the festival, you and Brown will search Philip and everything he has. And I need something to pin him down with. When you see anything, inform me.”
Brown bowed slightly. “Alright Alpha.”
Xavier looked at me, as if seeing my hesitation. “I will give you a go-ahead. The festival needs to start before the search would commence.”
"Yes, Alpha,” I and Brown responded at the same time.
Brown turned around, took the maid's corpse, and walked away.
I watched him for a moment before turning to look at Xavier again.
“Don't tell me you have something against it!” Xavier said suddenly.
He must have read me. I mean, he knows me more than anyone in this packhouse, and vice versa.
I and Xavier have been friends since he was just five. Thats what causes us to be extra close till now. We are best of friends.
But even at that, there were certain things I could say in front of outsiders. Whenever we are outside or in front of an outsider, I do address him like I'm supposed to, and I don't go against his words.
He's an Alpha ayways, with over ten Alphas under him. He is a king.
But when we are alone?
“Don't try to talk me out of it, Rick, because I won't listen to you!” he muttered and walked out of the prison.
I talk to him like a friend whenever we are alone, and he has never sanctioned me. Though I do know when to stop.
I followed him.
“Xavier, please, hear me out.”
Xavier stopped to look at me. “When the festival is over, Gwen must be found.”
“She will be found. We will do our best.”
He shook his head briefly. “We have to find her now, in three days maximum. I want to release Autumn as soon as possible,” he said softly.
I was shocked.
“Autumn needs to leave as quickly as possible. I need to set everything right.”
I must say that Xavier is always like a double personality whenever he's talking about Autumn.
I know he feels greatly remorseful about all he did to her, but then
It felt like that's not all. It felt like there was something else to it. Xavier was always hard when it came to Autumn, but recently, he's soft.
That meant something.
“Xavier, you need to be careful about Autumn. As much as I trust your judgement concerning her, I'm still disturbed. Autumn will want revenge. I don't think you can ever undo what you have done to her. You've massacred half of her pack members.”
“Well, that's why she needs to leave early. Everything has to be settled after the festival,” his voice was unbelievably soft.
I regarded him for a moment. Why does it feel like Xavier loves Autumn?
“But we can't just arrest Philip like that. He's one of the elders. It will cause an uproar among the other elders,” I explained.
“Well, I won't let Autumn stay any more days here, confined like a prison,” his tone changed suddenly. It sounded like he was getting angry. “I started the whole thing, Rick. Just trust me, I will sort it out!” He finished and walked away.
I watched him till he was out of sight.
Why does it look like Xavier was hiding something from me? Xavier has never kept anything from me, actually.
But then, he's not the only one doing that now.
How am I supposed to inform Xavier that Mercury has renounced her pack? And that Mercury is my mate!
And it doesn't even look like she was ever going to accept me. I mean, it's just not possible. The moment she decides to go with Autumn, I will be rejected.
It looks like Xavier's fate and mine are entwined. We are both fated to lose our fated mate.
But then, that should also mean I'm fated to die with Xavier because I won't let anyone kill him, not even Autumn.
