Shock kept me motionless and speechless for what seemed like an eternity when it was just a few minutes.
I was not only shocked; I was confused.
I stared at my parent for a moment as I tried to phrase my questions, even though I had a lot of them.
“Wait a moment, father. Are you saying there's actually someone in this world whose power is greater than the Alpha's?”
“You know how the silver wolf is. It's a type of wolf specially made by the moon goddess. It can't be compared with the Alpha's wolf. The Silver Wolf is power itself. Besides, most silver wolves always come from the Alpha's lineage,” he explained.
I looked away as the explanation sank in.
Autumn is the only daughter of Anthony. Apparently, she's also an Alpha. But I'm still shocked.
Autumn is supposed to be an omega.
I looked at my father again. “Are you sure of what you are saying?”
“Has your father ever lied to you or Xavier?” My mother said suddenly in a voice that showed she was upset at the question. “Your father and I have kept this in for so long. We actually thought today would never come. Who knew it would?”
My father sighed again, maybe for the umpteenth time that day. He looked away.
“I've always known today would come by the way. This was why I forbade you from leaving him. Perhaps you guys can avoid it together.”
I clenched my fists beside me unconsciously. “We would have avoided this if Xavier hadn't accused the Moon-like pack. Now, Autumn would definitely not hesitate.”
Father turned to look at me again. “Be on guard, Rick. The war day is close.”
I was still confused.
“But Father Autumn is an omega. She has no wolf.”
Father stared at me for a moment. “There's no way.”
“Well, she is. She has no wolf. She can't shift. If she was the silver wolf, why did she wait until now to kill Xavier?”
Father shrugged slightly. “There is a lot I wish I knew. If only we had a witch, maybe that would be easy. But the prophecy was straightforward. Autumn is the silver wolf, and she will kill Xavier.”
The words kept ringing in my head as I made my way back to Xavier’s palace. My parents would never lie to me. Well, they have no reason to.
Besides, they have always loved Xavier like their own.
I'm just still skeptical about the whole thing and confused.
How can Autumn be the Silver Wolf when she's wolfless?
Just as I got down from the horse, realization dawned on me. I remembered telling Xavier about Cindy.
Cindy was wolfless too until she got mated recently. What if Autumn was like that as well?
But then would that seriously be possible? I did test Autumn's power, and she failed. But then, could she be hiding it? Could she be lying? Maybe she's waiting for the right time to strike.
But if Father was right about her, she should be trying to leave now. Autumn even saved Xavier. She looked for the antidote. Why?
The whole thing was starting to mess with my head. I had questions, but the answers eluded me.
I stepped inside, and the first place my heart reached out to was the Alpha's room. At this point, I'm too scared not to worry.
But then it doesn't even matter if it's confirmed that Autumn has a silver wolf or not. It is certain that she would want to get back at Xavier for all he had done to her.
But then, that doesn't include the fact that one of the elders is looking forward to Xavier’s downfall.
There were just two guards stationed in front of his room, which was weird.
“Where is the king?”
“He stepped out with the queen,” one of the men revealed.
My heart made a sudden thud in my chest as I turned around and started out of the hallway.
Where could they have gone? The garden? I went there quickly, racing as if my life depended on it.
Actually, it does. If Xavier dies, it's all done for me.
I opened my mouth to call Xavier's name the moment I was in the garden but stopped almost immediately when I sighted them from afar.
Autumn and Xavier were standing facing each other and talking. For a moment, it looked like Xavier smiled, but then, it was gone as soon as it appeared.
That reminded me of the fact that it has been a while since I've seen him smile. The last time he smiled was before his Luna went missing. And I must say I have missed that so much.
I decided not to interrupt them and instead, watch them from afar. And if anything is about to go wrong, I would come in.
“Rick?” A soft voice reached my ears suddenly, and strawberry scent engulfed me.
I knew who it was before even turning.
Mercury stood still, clad in a long green gown that complimented her eyes. She had this doubtful look on as if she couldn't believe what I was doing.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
I hesitated. “I'm sorry, but I don't trust your Luna.”
She scoffed as if I just cracked a joke. “A few days ago, this was supposed to be our statement.”
I groaned inwardly. “You know that wasn't our fault. If we knew Autumn was innocent, we wouldn't have accused her.”
“Because you didn't bother to find the answers. You acted blindly to everything.”
I groaned again. She was right, though. If we had been very patient, we would have avoided this disaster.
I took a step closer to her, which I regretted immediately because she took a step backwards almost immediately as well.
I released a sigh. “You should reject me now.”
Her eyes seemed to widen slightly, but it was suddenly back to normal. “I, Mercury of the Moon-like pack, reject you, Rick, as my mate,” she muttered.
I sucked in a breath. “I accept,” I muttered and met her eyes for a moment as I felt pain rip through me, signifying the loss of our mate bond.
As much as I would like to have her in my arms, to kiss her, to mate her, I must still consider the reason why we must reject ourselves in the first place.
“But I must warn you, Mercury, that I will do everything I can, even if it involves my life, to fight against you if you dare threaten the King's life. And I will not die so easily. Thankfully, we are no longer mates. It won't be on me!”
Even as I said that, I felt pain rip me apart.
I'm sorry for just posting, been so sick.
