Hunt Festival
Xavier
That's strange, actually, the fact that I haven't seen Rick since morning. It's almost twelve now. The Hunt festival would start in an hour.
Come to think of it, I didn't see Rick yesterday as well. This is nothing like him; especially after the last poison incident, he has unexpectedly been staying so close to me.
Can something have happened? I should look for him. The worst thing that can happen to me right now is something bad happening to Rick.
A soft knock sounded on the door as I stood up. The door opened almost immediately without waiting for permission, and Rick sauntered in.
I must say that I have never seen Rick look so dejected and down.
“Rick, are you alright?”
He looked up and nodded slightly. There seemed to be some dark patches under his eyes. Aside from that, he looked a bit pale.
“You've not been sleeping, Rick.”
Rick tried to smile but failed miserably. It looked like he suddenly lost the way to smile.
“You know nothing about me, Xavier.”
I groaned inwardly. I didn't know if that was supposed to be an insult.
I moved to the window and stared out through it at some wolves fighting in the garden. Everyone seemed to be preparing for the Hunt Festival.
Rick was right. I've been so concerned about my life even before I became the Alpha that I didn't really monitor Rick. He had always cared for me like a brother when I barely knew anything about him.
Heck, was there really something I could do right?
“I'm sorry,” I muttered. “I'm the most difficult friend and the worst Alpha you've ever known.”
Rick laughed. “Mind you, you aren't only difficult; you are equally stubborn.”
I found myself laughing as well.
When I looked at Rick again, the color had changed. He looked better now. It felt like all he needed was to laugh.
“But Xavier, what if this plan doesn't work?” he asked, worriedly.
I hesitated briefly as I thought about it. Actually, this was the tenth time I would be thinking about it. I'm just as worried about it, but then, what else can I do?
“Then, we might be doomed.”
Rick held my gaze for a moment. “What will you do with Autumn then?”
I looked away now. “I promised to let her go.”
“But_”
A soft knock sounded on the door, interrupting Rick of the words he was about to say.
“It's someone from Alpha Augustine,” a voice announced.
The door opened, and one of my security guards stepped inside.
“Alpha Augustine wants me to give this to you. It's a list of how the festival arrangements are going to happen,” he explained.
I took the list from him and perused it. Augustine was the chief secretary of this kingdom. So, it was his job to attend to matters like this.
But the only places I wanted to check were where the Alphas were stationed to go. Autumn, on the other hand, could stay at the palace until after the whole festival has ended in the evening and celebrations have started since she's pretending to be Gwen, and Gwen was pregnant.
My eyes widened with shock when I saw that pregnant women were stationed as well.
I looked up at the guard. “Where is Augustine?”
“In the garden.”
“You are dismissed,” I ordered and watched him walk out.
“Is something wrong with the list?”
“Autumn isn't supposed to participate in the hunt. She's supposed to be pregnant, but Augustine suddenly included pregnant women.”
Rick sighed. “It shouldn't be that bad.”
I looked at him, like he doesn't even understand the point I am trying to make.
“Autumn can't shift. Anything can happen on the hunting ground,” I stressed.
Rick continued to stare at me like he didn't understand me. It was pointless talking to him. I need to meet up with Augustine before he distributes the plan.
I walked out of the room without another word.
Even though Autumn is a witch and has a wolf, there must be a reason why she's not attacking yet. It only means something is hindering her power. Or maybe she's merely sticking with my plan.
Heck no!
Why should she stick with my plan? Autumn hates me so much now, and I'm sure she would do all in her power to get away from me. But if she's not doing that now, it means there was something else attached. What if she hasn't fully gotten her wolf? It means she can get hurt.
I sighted Augustine from afar, speaking to some of the guards. I moved closer.
When I was close enough, Augustine turned towards me and bowed slightly.
“I was coming over to your place actually, but there has been a lot to do since morning. Though everyone will move in less than thirty minutes since the hunt will start in less than an hour now,” he explained.
“The list you sent to me, there's a mistake you need to correct.”
Augustine raised a brow. “What can that be?”
“About pregnant women. Gwen can't join the hunt. You know she's pregnant. Besides, why should pregnant women join this kind of thing? They can't even shift.”
Augustine smiled. “Well, you wanted a change this year, and I brought it up. I didn't want it to look like we were limiting people. A lot of pregnant women would actually like to join. Some of these women didn't participate in the Hunt Festival last year. This is a chance for them.”
I groaned impatiently. “You aren't addressing the main issue. These people can't shift. What's the essence of the hunt festival if they can't shift?”
“Well, there are a lot of weapons they can use. They can use their claws too, in fact. Besides, it would make it more interesting. I've created a special area for them. If you check the list very well, you will realize that no one is allowed to go to their territory. Every other werewolf will stay far away from them,” he further explained.
I regarded him for a moment. “Cancel it!”
He released a sigh. “I can't do that, Alpha, because I've sent the list out.”
What!
“You did what? Without informing me first?”
“You've always given me the right to the hunt festival. The last time, you told me I didn't need to inform you before I decided.”
I can't believe I said that. I sincerely can't!
I turned away for a moment. I feel bad about this.
“Is something wrong, Xavier? You've been keeping to yourself these past weeks. We weren't always like that.”
We weren't, but a lot has changed now.
I looked at him again. “I’m expecting a child, Augustine; I should be worried.”
Augustine laughed. “Don't you worry, Alpha. The Luna is from a powerful family. She's an Alpha. She's strong. Besides, what I've created for them isn't enough to affect your heir.”
“I hope so,” I said between clenched teeth before I turned away without another word.
I could feel Augustine look at me, though, as I walked away.
