Rick brows were drawn together as he continued to look at me. He doesn't seem to get all I have been saying.
But I didn't even understand it until now.
Who could have thought it? Philip was always the main suspect, but then he could be working in favour of Augustine.
Just maybe Augustine is even preparing the Alphas to turn away from Xavier.
“Augustine is_”
“Rick!” Brown called suddenly, interrupting me with the words I was about to say. He raced closer, then he looked at me, and a flicker of shock passed his eyes. “Your majesty.”
Rick sighed. “Is something wrong? What's with the howl?”
Brown was still in shock, but he turned to look at Rick nevertheless. “To declare a misfortune.”
“What? Is the King alright?” Rick was agitated.
Brown nodded once. “Yes, the howl wasn't about the king. It was about the Queen. The queen is dead.”
I looked at Brown for a moment, then at Rick, shocked.
Rick on the other hand burst into laughter. “Are you kidding me? This is_,” he stopped suddenly. “What?”
“I'm as surprised as you are. I thought the Queen was truly dead until now,” Brown explained further.
I released a sigh. I knew this was it. Augustine must have been suspicious as to why Xavier wasn't going to search Philip and him but the other Alphas. He must have knew we were on Philip’s tail, especially if he's the one sending him on those errands. So, he must have concluded the Alpha now doubted him. So he had to hurry things up.
“Brown, you have to escort the queen to her chamber. And make sure no one sees her. No one can see her until the Alpha says otherwise,” he ordered.
Brown nodded once. “And you?”
“I will look for her personal maid. She will keep her safe. You can look for the king after you've escorted her to the room. Since everyone now believes she's dead, they wouldn't suspect she would be in her room,” he decided.
Brown nodded once and turned to me. “Let's go, your Majesty.”
I looked at Rick. “I think I know what all this is all about. Let's talk when you see the King.”
Rick nodded once before he walked away.
I watched him for a moment before I turned to Brown. “Let's go.”
Brown seemed to know some short cuts here. We were able to pass a lot of places without anyone knowing. Eventually, we arrived at the back of the palace.
I stopped walking now and looked at Brown. “I can find my way to my room now. You can go look for the Alpha and let him know I'm fine.”
Brown started to shake his head. “No, I can't do that. I have to escort you to your room,” he protested.
“I will be fine,” I insisted. “We are close already. Besides, I would like you to find the Alpha as quickly as possible before he truly thinks something has happened to me.”
Brown hesitated briefly. “Are you sure you will be fine?”
I pushed a smile to my face as I nodded slightly. “Yes, I will be,” I assured him.
“Alright then,” he succumbed, bowed, and walked away.
Augustine must have had some enmity with Xavier’s father. Stephen was a hard and callous man, so that wasn't strange.
Now, Augustine not only wants to destroy the pack, he wants to destroy his son, Xavier, by using the prophecy against him.
I felt pity for Xavier, actually. I mean, he doesn't deserve to go through such at a tender age, but then I didn't deserve this either. It doesn't justify what he had done to me.
My pack members didn't deserve to die or be taken as slaves.
But then, I couldn't stop thinking of the fact that he helped me a few minutes ago. If it wasn't for the Alpha, I would have been dead. But then, if he didn't enslave me here, others wouldn't try to harm me now.
I stopped walking suddenly when I saw a figure cuddled up in the hallway. My heart skipped a beat at who it was.
One of the maids? Or Mercury?
No way!
I raced closer, my heart in my mouth. Nothing must happen to Mercury.
Yet again, I'm forced to a sudden stop, but now I was standing so close, too close to this strange yet familiar woman.
How? My eyes widened with shock.
I sincerely wasn't expecting to see who I was staring at, even though I was a bit relieved it wasn't Mercury.
But was I dreaming?
I mentally rubbed my eyes several times before staring down again. The face I was looking at didn't change.
I crouched in front of her and reached to grab her. “Gwen!” I called softly.
Or maybe this is a trick. What kind of trick can it be? How did Gwen get here?
“Gwen!” I called again.
She wasn't even moving. I had no idea if she was dead or not.
At this time, my heart was beating even faster. I had no idea what to do. I mean, I'm the only one around here.
Suddenly, some images flashed across my eyes.
I saw me, no, Gwen, riding in the forest, and I saw some men lurking behind in the woods.
When I was back again, my breath was coming in fast. What was that? What did I just see?
I pulled back in fright as I felt beads of perspiration tickle down my face.
Come to think of it, this was the third time I would be having unrelated visions when I make contact with people.
What could be happening to me?
“Your powers,” Riley muttered. “I think you have the power to see the past whenever you make contact with people,” she explained.
What!
Riley grunted. “Why does she look so much like you?”
That was right. Now that I look at her, there isn't really much difference between us. She looks too much like me. The only difference I could pinpoint was the hair colour. She was red-haired, which was what she dyed her hair to before she got missing.
There was a slight movement from Gwen, and my heart leapt for joy. She's alive!
I reached to grab her again but stopped almost immediately. I don't want to see any visions.
“It doesn't work like that, actually. It's something you must learn how to control, just as you do with your witch’s power,” Riley explained.
Good.
Gwen raised her head slowly. Her mouth opened slightly as she regarded me for a moment. There was shock in her eyes. She was just as shocked as I was when I saw her a few minutes ago.
I mean, I have never seen someone look so much alike unless they were family.
“Who are you?” She asked softly.
I had no idea what she was asking, actually.
“I'm Autumn,” I responded nonetheless. “We've been looking for you.”
She blinked once. “Why do you look so much like me?” she asked in a voice that sounded stressed.
“I need to help you inside,” I said urgently. “I will send a message to the King immediately.”
Suddenly, my nose twitched, signifying we aren't alone.
I turned around to look at Xavier.
There was this shock look on Xavier's face as he regarded us for a moment as if he were trying to make a word for it.
I'm as shocked as he is actually.
“What the heck!” He muttered deeply and started towards us. “Gwen?” There was disbelief in his voice.
I stood up and stepped aside.
Gwyn sobbed quietly. “X_xavier,” she called, then closed her eyes and fainted.
Xavier caught her before she would hit her head on the floor. He scooped her up and walked away, without acknowledging me as if I had never been here.
Now that Gwen was back, a lot was going to change.
