My arms tightened around her. I couldn't believe that I was holding Gwen in my arms again.
How? Where did she come out from? I had questions, but answers eluded me.
I stared down at her. Her eyes were still closed, and she hadn't shifted or even made a little move.
That bothered me.
I entered my room and placed her on the bed. There was no one stationed in front of my room, as everyone was probably on the hunt ground.
Besides, the news has gotten everyone on edge.
Someone wanted to murder Autumn, thinking she was Gwen. The people must have thought their plan was successful.
I stepped out again. I need to get Albert. He needs to start treating Gwen as soon as possible.
My heart raced at the fact that Gwen was back to me again. I can't believe it. I wouldn't have thought it would happen so soon.
While I was contemplating how to get the doctor, Rick showed up from afar. He hurried closer.
“Xavier, have you seen Autumn?”
I nodded once. “Get me Albert.”
Rick's eyes widened with shock. “Is Autumn alright?”
I nodded quickly. “Get the doctor first. We can talk later,” I said urgently.
He nodded once and started out.
I walked back inside to check Gwen again. She was still as I had placed her on the bed. I was starting to worry now at the fact that she was yet to make any move.
She's alive now, though, but I was still worried.
I wonder what she had gone through. And I silently swore to make everyone pay. I just need her to wake up and tell me. I just need her to mention names, and I'm going to kill everyone.
The door opened suddenly, pulling me out of my thoughts.
Albert and Rick entered.
So fast! Rick saw the urgency in my tone. That's why he's my friend anyway.
“Here Albert, check her!” I ordered and gestured towards Gwen.
Rick took a step forward, and his eyes widened with shock. He regarded Gwen for a moment, then turned to me.
He couldn't speak actually, because of Albert.
“Oh my! She's breathing faintly. She's also unnecessarily cold! I need to get something from my room!” He said urgently.
“Quick go. Rick, is there anyone that can accompany him?”
Rick nodded once. “Brown came with me.”
I watched them step out, but Rick returns almost immediately.
“Fuck! This is Gwen!” There was disbelief in his eyes. “Or am I wrong? Autumn wasn't red-haired when I left her a few minutes back.”
I nodded slightly. “It's Gwen,” I confirmed for him.
“What!” He was shocked. “How? Where?”
I shrugged briefly. “I have no idea what happened. She hasn't opened her eyes. I just met her in the hallway on my way to Autumn,” I explained.
Rick looked at Gwen for another moment. “Isn't this strange though?”
“What is?”
“They tried to kill Autumn, and they released Gwen.”
“Well, we can't be sure they released Gwen. She could have escaped.”
Rick released a sigh. “Well, if she can, she should have done that all this while. Besides, she can't even shift. She's pregnant.”
I swallowed hard on the news. I didn't want to think of the probability that she had lost the baby. Though Gwen's health matters a lot to me now.
“Is she still pregnant?” Rick asked, looking up at me.
I turned away, a bit frustrated. If I could check that, I would have been happy.
“I can't establish a connection. I don't know why.”
Rick groaned. “This is strange,” he went quiet for a moment. “Autumn, she was saying something the other time. I will_”
“Leave her out of this.”
“What?” Rick stared, shocked.
“Yes. It's enough. Tell her she can leave whenever she's prepared to. Let me know whatever she decides on. This matter belongs to the Ocean Howl Pack. So, we will handle it. I finished in a voice that left no room for more conversation.
The door opened behind us, and Albert hurried inside again. He started treatment immediately.
“I want to know if she's still pregnant.”
Albert hesitated briefly. “She's not. I felt her pulse the first time. She's definitely not pregnant, and it doesn't even look like she just lost it. It merely looks like she hasn't been pregnant,” he explained.
I felt my fist tighten beside me. I feel so much anger in me, but then it was as if there was something bringing it down. I can't seem to be able to get angry like I used to, like I was used to.
Being with Autumn has taught me a lot.
Brown walked inside suddenly, and Rick moved closer to Albert so that Brown wouldn't see who he was attending to.
I moved closer to him. “Is everything wrong?”
“The Alphas demand your presence on the matter.”
I turned slightly to look at Rick. “Keep hold until I'm back,” I ordered.
Rick bowed slightly while I stepped out with Brown.
“Did they find any corpse?”
“Yes, they brought out a female corpse, but it wasn't Her Majesty. I mean, Her Majesty is alive.”
I nodded once. “Escort Her Majesty over to the ground now.”
Brown bows slightly and walks away.
My mind was still in a daze. My incapacity was finally weighing down on me. I lost my Luna for weeks, and now that she's back, she has lost the baby too.
Pain stabbed at my chest. I've failed.
I've not only failed as an Alpha; I've failed as a father. I've failed as a mate. Tell me then why I don't deserve to die.
I stopped abruptly, my feet suddenly unable to move me. The pain in my heart was too deep, but instead of transforming into anger like it used to, I felt a mixture of fear, guilt, and regret.
I swallowed hard on the urge to howl. I tried to calm down.
Even though that feeling was strange. Being angry was something I was taught growing up.
When my father took Rick, he wanted me to be angry. He wanted me to seek vengeance, sit right, and come at him.
I'm starting to regret that anyway. If I had been calm when I first met Autumn, I wouldn't have made such a stupid mistake.
A few minutes later, my wolf calmed down. The thought of losing our pup was also eating him deep as well.
