I regarded Gwen for a moment. I had no idea how long I had been standing here.
But then, I couldn't bring myself to leave. It felt like Gwen might wake up while I was away. And I didn't want to miss that.
A soft knock sounded on the door, but I didn't take my eyes off her.
My nose twitched suddenly, and I immediately turned to look at Brown before he would move closer and see Gwen.
“Report!” I ordered.
“The feast will start in less than a few minutes. Alpha Augustine wants me to remind you about it,” he announced.
I regarded him for a moment. I can't leave Gwen behind. What if Philip tries nonsense before I get back?
He had eventually made me terminate the plan of searching for him. Definitely, he was really the one that kidnapped Gwen.
“Get Rick for me and inform Augustine that I would be there very soon.”
Brown bowed slightly and walked out.
I released a ragged sigh before I turned to look at Gwen again.
“Alpha!” Rick called suddenly, jerking me out of my thoughts again.
I looked at him. He looked worried.
“Thank goodness you are here. Inform Autumn that she has to leave tonight.”
Rick shook his head briefly. “We have an emergency! We have a situation!”
I raised my brows. “Is everything alright?”
Rick shook his head briefly. “Rowan is on the way here.”
What!
“How?”
Was I dumb? The war! It must have been what Philip wanted. Apparently, Philip must have informed him. He had it all planned out. He planned to kill Autumn and release unconscious Gwen.
And now that this has happened. Is there really a way to avoid the war?
I felt a surge of anger suddenly. My fist clenched involuntarily beside me.
“What are we going to do now?” Rick’s face mirrored fear as he asked this question.
I turned away for a moment as I thought about it. My head was reeling, but I knew I needed to make a decision.
The war was inevitable. There was no other way we could avoid it now. The one thing I feared was coming true.
If not, I will be forced to keep Autumn here, but till when? Besides, there was no assurance that Autumn would be able to deceive Rowan.
Aside from that, if it's not even certain that Gwen would live, then it's all over. I should surrender, not to Philip, but to Autumn.
“Lead Rowan here,” I decided.
“What!” Rick exclaimed. “You must be kidding? Do you know what will happen if he sees his cousin on the sickbed like this?”
I released a ragged sigh and turned to him again. “I am going to tell him the truth,” I revealed.
Rick started to shake his head. “That can't happen. No way! We can't do that,” he protested.
“Or what? The war? How do I avoid the war now? Let Autumn continue to pretend to be Gwen.
Rick nodded quickly.
I laughed. It looks like I'm the only one thinking this deep.
“You don't know how impossible that is. Rowan grew up with Gwen. He knows her better than her parents. There's no way Autumn can fool him.”
“But at least that's better than doing nothing. We should try. Besides, Autumn was able to fool a lot of people. I'm so certain she can do it again.”
I shook my head briefly. “It's all over, Rick. Whatever will happen has to happen now. Because I have promised to let Autumn go the moment I find Gwen. I will not keep her in for another moment,” I said sincerely.
Rick regarded me for a moment. “So, we prepare for war?”
“It's inevitable. Let's Brown lead Rowan here while you gather the Alphas in the meeting room. Tell them I have urgent information to pass across, and it has to happen very fast.”
Rick’s expression changed drastically. He hesitated for a moment. “I don't like this, Xavier. I don't.”
I don't either, but it's the only way out.
“Let's talk later in the morning. There's something you need to know.”
Rick studied me for another moment. “Alright,” he muttered and stepped out of the room.
I gave Gwen a last look before I started out of the room as well.
It's the end. And I will surrender.
There were few guards standing in front of my room. Having warned them not to let anyone in except the physician, I set out towards Gwen's room.
I walked inside without even knocking. I hesitated almost immediately as her scent engulfed me. It soothed my soul for a moment until fear entered.
Autumn was my doom anyways.
She was standing by the dresser, as if lost in thought. She jerked up suddenly and turned to look at me.
Her eyes widened for a moment, as if she couldn't believe I was standing here.
She took a step closer. “Are you staying away from me?” she accused.
I watched her expression for a moment, the way she contoured her face. She looked different from Gwen.
No, she has always looked and felt different whenever I was with her. And whenever I was with Gwen, I was always reminded of her. No matter where I was, Autumn always clouded my mind.
Even though I had struggled with that conclusion, I felt it always staring right at me in the face.
“No, I'm here for your interest.”
She regarded me for another moment. “I have something to tell you about_”
“It's over!” I said quickly, shutting her off.
It's really over.
“Rowan is here, and you have to leave as soon as possible.”
She regarded me for another moment. “Are you sure about that?”
I nodded once. “You can't deceive Rowan. Besides, I've promised to let you go whenever I find Gwen.”
She tried to smile. “But you didn't find her. She came here.”
I said nothing.
She cleared her throat meaningfully. “I'm meeting with the elders tonight so we can plan how we are going to move. But we will definitely move tomorrow.”
I nodded once. “Move out before seven. You have to move out before then, or you won't be able to leave again.”
Confusion clouded her eyes. “Why?”
“Because the Alphas will surely frame you for my death.”
