~ Gwen ~
Gwen could not help but be amused at Theo’s reaction. He howled and screamed repeatedly, “I’m going to be a father! I’m going to be a father again!”
Then, Theo embraced Gwen. He held her so tightly that she struggled to breathe. He asked, “This is true, right?”
“Very true,” Gwen responded while rubbing Theo’s back. “Mom specifically asked to check my HCG level. She has had her speculations.”
Theo pulled away, kissing her face repeatedly, and asked, “Speculations?”
“Haven’t you noticed that Gwen has been picky with her food lately?” Juliet asked Theo. She shrugged and added, “I guess we all have been so busy preparing for Hazel’s execution that you missed Gwen’s symptoms, but I noticed.”
“Of course, to confirm everything, we need to have an ultrasound!” Juliet winked at Gwen, saying, “I already asked the nurse to schedule it with a gynecologist.”
Gwen was admitted to Cada General Hospital, where she worked as a miracle doctor. It was the best hospital in the country, so Theo did not think twice about taking her there.
“Should we tell Ian and the rest of the family?” Theo asked.
Gwen chuckled. She held Theo’s hand and said, “Let’s wait until the ultrasound is done.”
Theo pecked her forehead, cupped her face, and said, “I love you. Thank you for giving me this chance.”
Later that afternoon, Gwen was brought to the obstetrics and gynecology department. Doctor Winona Rivers, one of Gwen’s hospital colleagues, walked in, shocked to see her.
Coincidentally, Theo was having a quick conference call with King Arthur and Alexander. This is why he remained in Gwen’s room but promised to catch up as soon as he finished the call.
Doctor Winona came with three resident doctors who were training under her leadership. The second she met Gwen’s eyes, she said, “Doctor Weneth, is that you?”
“Um, yes, it’s me,” Gwen replied.
“Your eyes are purple,” Doctor Winona commented.
“It’s my natural eye color. It’s an iris pigmentation I acquired from my parents,” Gwen explained, urging Doctor Winona to glance at Juliet.
“I see,” Winona remarked, frowning. “Anyway, Weneth, I’m surprised to see you! Are you going to come back to work? Because patients have been lining up to see you. We have tried to push your patients to other doctors, but many of them still awaited your return.”
Gwen sighed. She was fully aware that many of her patients had received treatments from her mother, Juliet, but when her parents left for Northern Alfar, they were left with no miracle cure. For most of them, their standard medications were not enough.
“You know, I could never understand why, despite your absence, the hospital refuses to dismiss you. How exactly are you pulling favors?” Winona asked, raising a brow.
“Excuse me?” Juliet reacted first. “My daughter does no such thing! You don’t know -”
“It’s okay, Mom. Doctor Winona does not know about the special task given to me,” Gwen said.
“Oh, really?” Winona asked. “What special task would that be?”
Gwen stared at the doctor and replied, “King Alexander had asked me to treat his brother in Northern Alfar, but not many know because my assistant was held back from spreading the word due to a threat to my life.”
To Gwen’s surprise, Winona scoffed. She reacted, “Our King? Why would our king want to help the Northern King? It’s known to all that they are not on good terms.” Winona turned to her underlings, asking, “Right?”
“As far as I know, Doctor Winona,” one resident doctor said.
“People change, Doctor Winona. Family will always be family, and King Alexander realized that. Since I am the miracle doctor, he asked me to treat his brother,” Gwen explained. “Now, Doctor Winona, you obviously dislike me, so I would rather have a different OB doctor.”
Doctor Winona scoffed. She replied, “Oh, don’t flatter yourself, Weneth. Sadly, I’m the only OB doctor available today. It’s not like we both have a choice. Besides, I’m just here to—” She checked Gwen’s chart and said, “Perform a transvaginal ultrasound? You are pregnant again? Who is the father this time?”
Because of her comment, the resident doctors behind her laughed. They whispered amongst each other, and while Gwen did not hear their exact words, she could tell they were mocking her.
Gwen frowned. If she remembered clearly, Doctor Winona had previously opposed for Gwen to have a consultancy job at Cada General Hospital. Winona pointed out that Gwen was not a good role model for being an unmated single mother. Thankfully, Gwen’s exceptional skills granted her a position at the hospital.
“What are you trying to imply?” Juliet directed her question to Winona.
“You must be Gwen’s mother. I had seen you around, managing Weneth’s clinic,” Doctor Winona said. “I’m sorry, but this is part of the standard questions I should ask about the pregnancy. You know, medical history. If there are complications that I should be aware of, I should know beforehand.”
Gwen’s blood was already boiling inside. She gritted her teeth and replied, “The father is the same. And I did not have any medical complications during my first child. I gave birth vaginally to a healthy baby boy.”
“Oh.” Doctor Winona’s eyes rounded. She remarked, “Interesting. Is he taking responsibility this time around?”
Gwen grabbed a handful of her hair and flaunted her neck. She showed off her mark and said, “Does this answer your question?”
Instantly, Doctor Winona frowned. The residents behind her gossipped before the OB doctor instructed, “Anyway, let’s proceed with the ultrasound. We can continue discussing there.”
Because Gwen and Juliet wanted to know the pregnancy’s condition badly, they did not object to Doctor Winona performing the ultrasound. Gwen got comfortable in the hospital bed while Winona’s assistants prepared for the procedure. In any case, it was just an ultrasound. Chances were, Gwen would continue her pregnancy back in Port Leon.
“Have you seen Alpha Theo of Northern Alfar around the hospital? Goddess, he is so handsome,” the sonographer suddenly muttered. “I wonder why he is here.”
Gwen quickly became attentive. ‘How did Theo’s presence reach the OB-GYN department?’
“Alpha Theo? Isn’t he the richest and strongest alpha of Northern Alfar?” Doctor Winona asked.
“What makes that alpha famous that even the southern people know him?” One resident asked.
“It’s because his pack is a well-known hub for trade,” the sonographer said. “Plus, his pack has faced numerous invasions in recent years, and his reputation has only grown after successfully overcoming them.”
“Okay. Okay.” Doctor Winona grinned. She asked, “Can anybody tell me what Alpha Theo of the north is doing here?”
“He was seen on the seventh floor. One of the nurses there said he was visiting somebody, but in contrast, one of the emergency nurses said he had been here since yesterday and had admitted a patient,” the sonographer revealed.
“What? That’s no scoop at all!” Doctor Winona remarked. “Somebody has to give me the juicy details.”
“Doctor Winona,” one resident doctor said. “Are you interested in Alpha Theo? I have a relative from the north. They said that Alpha Theo was once married and lost his wife to a rogue attack. So, he is single and could be ready to mingle -”
A growl immediately left Gwen’s lips. Juliet, who had held back from remarking, grabbed Gwen’s arm.
Doctor Winona immediately reacted, “What is your problem, Doctor Weneth?”
Gwen’s eyes were glowing. She did not realize how her possessiveness over her mate had taken over her. She barked, “Alpha Theo is not single nor will ever be ready to mingle -”
The resident doctors who were shadowing Winona looked at Gwen confused, while the OB doctor laughed. Winona raised, “And how would you know that? Please, don’t tell me you are interested in Alpha Theo, Weneth.”
A hysterical laugh escaped Winona’s lips. She remarked, “Why would such an admirable alpha be interested in a single mother like you?”
“Gwen? Gwen? Where are you?” Suddenly, Gwen heard Theo’s voice from a distance. It did not take long for him to find her, and he barged right into the ultrasound room.
Everyone, especially Winona and her medical team, gasped at Theo’s presence. Their mouths hung open, and their eyes sparkling with excitement.
Gwen could not blame them for staring. Theo had always been incredibly handsome. From his sharp, attractive features to his strong, well-built body, he naturally caught people’s attention. It was not just his looks; his confident posture and commanding presence made him stand out even more.
“Alpha Theo?” Doctor Winona asked, her face blushing. “What - what are you doing here?”
“I’m -” Theo looked at Doctor Winona confused. He replied, “I’m here for my wife.”
