~ Theo ~
“Alpha Theo, we received a denial from the borders of New Arcadia,” Brody reported.
It had been three days since Gwen was taken, and they were now back in Port Leon. There was still no news about her. However, Theo took some comfort in the fact that he couldn’t feel Gwen in pain, which reassured him that his mate was still alive.
As for Theo, he had barely slept in three days. He only tried to be strong for his children. They were without a mother, so he had to play the role of both parents.
Hearing Brody’s report, Theo’s hand clenched into a fist. There was no other way but to travel to New Arcadia in secret. He turned to his beta and said, “You must take care of the pack while I am gone.”
Theo saw his beta’s face turned sour. Brody grumbled, “Alpha, why am I always missing the action?”
“Are you telling me you are going to New Arcadia instead to save my wife? Shouldn’t that be my responsibility?” Theo barked, and Brody lowered his head.
“Apologies, Alpha,” Brody expressed. “I just wish I could come with you.”
“Your responsibility is here - to help protect the pack and my children,” Theo explained.
“Understood, Alpha,” Brody acknowledged.
After seeing Brody leave, Theo walked back up to Lilac’s room. His mother, Catherine, had been staying in the packhouse since they left for the medical mission that had gone wrong.
Catherine was cradling Lilac. The pup was crying, and Theo’s mother said, “She misses Gwen.”
“Let me take her,” Theo offered his arms. “I’ll be gone and don’t know when I’ll return. I should spend time with Lilac tonight.”
Catherine let out a heavy sigh. She wanted to say something but decided not to speak. Theo understood why. His mother had fears about his leaving, and so did he. But there was no other way around it. He had to find his wife. He had to figure out how to kill the bug in Ian’s arm.
After taking Lilac, the pup hushed. Theo smiled because his daughter recognized him. He muttered, “You missed Daddy?”
Lilac was only slightly over two months old, but she was strong. She could already lift her head. Lilac stretched her little arms to Theo and tried to roll to his chest. Theo embraced his daughter lovingly and said, “Daddy is here. I love you.”
“I’m going to take her to Ian’s room,” Theo told Catherine.
“Are you sure? You are leaving tomorrow. You need a good sleep,” Catherine suggested.
“I don’t think I can sleep well, anyway, Mother. I, at least, need my children,” Theo responded. He forced a smile and left. Catherine also returned to the guestroom where she had stayed the past few days.
When Theo entered Ian’s room, he found his son awake. Ian looked at him woefully and said, “I miss Mommy.”
“I know, Ian,” Theo said. He settled next to him and showed Ian his sister. “But we have to be strong for Lilac.”
Lilac blabbered before Ian. She reached for her brother’s face, and Ian held Lilac’s hand and pecked it. He said, “We will be okay, Lilac. Daddy will find Mommy.”
Theo and Ian watched over Lilac for two hours. At midnight, Ian fell asleep helplessly, exhausted in their shared bed.
Theo stayed awake into the early hours, tending to Lilac and quietly watching over his children. The sight of them without their mother filled him with sadness, but that sorrow quickly gave way to determination. He refused to give in to despair. He would find Gwen, uncover the truth behind the bug in Ian’s arm, and eliminate every threat. He would do whatever it took to make his family whole again.
Has he not suffered enough?
Theo lost Gwen and missed the first years of Ian’s life. This was supposed to be their chance at happiness!
In light of that, Theo finally found a fleeting moment of calm to rest his body. When he woke up at six in the morning, he had at least four hours of sleep.
He linked his mother, requesting Catherine to watch over the kids. By eight, he was ready to leave. The kids were still sleeping. Theo kissed both his children and said, “Stay safe. Stay strong. Daddy will bring Mommy back. I love you both.”
Theo was about to leave, but Ian awoke. The pup called, “Daddy.”
“Hey, Buddy, it’s time for me to leave. Your Grandma Juliet and Grandpa George will be here soon to help watch over you and Lilac,” Theo said. “Your Uncle Baron, Jacob, and Aunt Caroline will travel with me to New Arcadia.”
Ian paused as he lifted himself. He embraced Theo and said, “Be safe, Daddy. I love you. When you find Mommy, tell her I love her.”
“I will,” Theo said in a whisper. He stared at Ian’s arm and asked, “Do you feel any pain.”
Ian shook his head. “No, no pain today, Daddy.”
It seemed as though the witch had no plans to harm Ian unless they were to retaliate. So, this mission had to be carried out carefully. The witch must never find out about their quest to seek her out.
At Drad City Airport, Theo expected to leave with Caroline, Jacob, and two of his best warriors, Dunken and Rollin. However, he was shocked to see King Arthur in his fighting gear.
King Arthur walked towards them at the runaway, saying, “It’s about time that I take full responsibility for this. This was, after all, Hazel’s fault.”
“What are you saying, My King?” Theo asked.
“I’m coming with you to New Arcadia,” King Arthur declared. “I want to help find Gwen. Don’t worry. After I had recuperated, I had been training with Ivor. Rest assured, I will be of help to you, Theo.”
“I don’t doubt your capabilities, Your Highness,” Theo responded.
“Then, let’s go. I understand we must drop by Cada City to pick up the doctor’s brother, Baron,” King Arthur said.
“Yes,” Theo replied.
They all left in a private plane, stopping by Cada City to fetch Baron, then flew to Lupine Falls. New Arcadia was next to Lupine Falls. A huge coastal chasm divided it, creating a narrow channel around four hundred meters wide between the two nations. The same cliffs drop about five hundred meters down into the water’s surface, and under it, the depth was unknown.
The best way to enter New Arcadia was through their ports. The other was through private jets. There was a third option, but it was considered a myth.
Under New Arcadia’s dangerous cliffs, a passage was said to exist. This was the information King Orion’s adviser gave King Arthur and Theo. It was said to be a risky route, and many unknown creatures lived in the same passage, but the most evident danger was the angry waves between the cliffs.
Theo and his group, including King Arthur, arrived at the location at night. The spot was well-covered with trees and huge boulders. They had crawled to the cliff’s edge so the guards across New Arcadia would not notice their presence.
It was dark, but their eyes quickly adjusted to the dusk. Rollin stared at the fierce waves crashing against the rocks below. He said, “This is dangerous.”
“And they said that access to New Arcadia is beneath those waves?” Brody asked from a distance.
“Yes,” Theo confirmed. He looked up to the cliff that belonged to New Arcadia. The border was fully secured with wired fences. By looking at it, the fences appeared to be charged with electricity.
“There is no other way,” King Arthur said. “We can’t even cross the gap going to New Aarcadia, much more, go through the fences without alerting the border patrol.”
“How do we even know this passage exists?” Dunken asked.
“We just have to try it,” Theo said. He gulped before instructing, “Prepare the rope. It’s time to descend.”
~ Gwen ~
Gwen fluttered her eyes open. She awoke, gasping for air. She found herself alerted, seeing that she was tied with silver chains and that her arms had needle marks.
“You are finally awake,” a woman’s voice rang in the dark. Gwen immediately recognized the voice. It belonged to the witch.
“Where am I?” Gwen asked faintly.
The witch moved closer, revealing her face. With a diabolical smile, the witch said, “Somewhere, your husband cannot find you. Haha!”
