~ King Arthur ~
“Mate?” King Arthur repeated, and the second he raised it, the snakes nodded their heads!
Everyone gasped in shock. Rollin remarked, “Your Highness, the snakes have a crush on you.”
“Nonsense!” King Arthur barked at the warrior. “Do you want to die?”
“U - um, My King, just out of curiosity, do you feel a mate bond with the snakes?” Dunken asked, further aggravating Arthur.
“I think I will kill you first,” Arthur scolded Dunken. “No, stupid. How could I be mated to over a hundred snakes? How would that even work? A werewolf king and a harem of snakes?”
Just as Arthur grumbled, he saw how the snakes rolled their eyes from his side glance!
“Did you see that?” Theo reacted. “They rolled their fucking eyes?”
Just then, Caroline had made their way to them. She said, “These snakes are strange.”
Again, the golden serpents all focused on Arthur. Using their mouths, they pointed to Arthur and then back to the wall, where the same number of snakes had formed the word ‘Mate.’
“You are telling me that I’m your mate?” King Arthur said in anger.
The snakes all shook their heads. Then, using their mouths, they pointed to the long passage ahead. Afterward, they pointed back to the serpents who formed the word ‘Mate.’
Everyone gasped. Theo was the first to suggest, “I think they are telling you that your mate is in that direction, My King.”
All the snakes quickly nodded their heads, some leaping in agreement!
“Wow, snakes who understand werewolf language,” Caroline noted.
“Too bad they don’t speak werewolf,” Baron muttered.
At that point, King Arthur felt his chest become uneasy. Was his true mate over there? Somewhere in the depths of the cave? Or… was this a trick?
Hazel, his chosen mate, not only betrayed him, but it also made Arthur crave to find his destined mate. Was this finally his chance? Whether it was a ploy or not, the snakes could lead them to safety. Thus, Arthur gulped and said, “Okay… lead the way.”
It was as if he saw the snake smile! Their eyes gleamed, and they swiftly glided across the cave, some turning back to ensure their party followed behind them.
It was a long journey.
Arthur and his companions navigated the cave’s winding, often dangerous, inclined tunnels, sometimes crawling into narrow passages. The floors were uneven and usually slippery. So far, the cave’s light sources, if there were any, were crystals or minerals that formed from the ceiling.
Their party encountered other dangerous critters, such as giant salamanders, other vipers, and scorpions, but the golden serpents fought them all.
The golden snakes were fierce, and judging by how some of their opponents died, it would seem as though they were venomous. Still, a few serpents were killed in the fight, earning Arthur’s sympathy.
As they followed the snakes, Jacob and Caroline took healing potions, the same ones Lunar Vitae Pharmaceuticals produced. They had packed protein bars with them, which they all snacked on as they continued their climb.
The one thing they needed was water. It had been two hours since their trek began, and Arthur could no longer hold back. He asked the snakes, “We are thirsty. Is there water here we can safely drink?”
The snakes all nodded at the same time and pointed up ahead. With the possibility of clean water that is available to drink, Arthur and everyone else rushed to follow the snakes’ lead.
Soon, they reached an incredibly massive opening with a high ceiling. Crystals illuminated that area, and stalagmites hung down like sharp icicles, dripping with mineral-rich water.
“Water,” Caroline softly said. She was the first to taste it, and after a second, she cried. “I think the water is safe.”
Arthur saw the snakes nod again. He also found a good source of water and quenched his thirst. He said, “The water is so fresh, well filtered by minerals.”
They all drank to their heart’s desire. In that portion of the cave, they rested for a while, ate the remainder of their protein bars, and filled some of their waterproof bags with water.
“Let’s go,” Theo said after two hours. “I’m sorry to hurry, everyone, but we must find my wife.”
Everyone set to leave. Before doing so, King Arthur asked the snakes, “Will meeting the person whom you say is my mate lead us to the surface of New Arcadia?”
The snakes nodded.
“Becuase, the truth is, we are here to look for Alpha Theo’s wife,” Arthur pointed to Theo. “A witch kidnaped his wife, and we believe she was taken to New Arcadia.”
The snakes looked at each other and gave Arthur mixed reactions. Some nodded, and some shook their heads. They seemed intelligent, but he supposed they could not process multiple statements.
“Let’s just follow them. So far, they have helped us. I hope they mean well,” King Arthur expressed.
‘If I am wrong, though,’ King Arthur mused. ‘I don’t know how I could keep my pride. Imagine being tricked by snakes! I can’t imagine what my brother would say.’
They trekked for another three hours. In between, they faced dangerous, unknown creatures within the cave. This time, Arthur and his group dealt with the threats. Nonetheless, the snakes contributed in whatever way they could.
Although their water had been entirely consumed, they soon found another water source. This time, the opening was bigger and brighter. So much water dripped down from the ceiling, forming a pool in one steep slope—like a massive underground lake.
Suddenly, the snakes pointed to the far end of the pool of water. Arthur and everyone else followed the serpents' gazes. What they saw stunned them.
A beautiful woman hovered just above the still water, her appearance mesmerizing.
The woman wore flowing, translucent robes that shimmered like starlight, gently moving in an invisible breeze. Her skin glowed softly, kissed by moonlight, and her black hair floated weightlessly around her.
A white light circled her, radiating magic so intense it seemed to stop time. The water below was perfectly still, as if afraid to disturb her.
Though she looked calm and graceful, faint shimmering energy bound her wrists and ankles, tying her to an unseen force.
The sight of this woman made Arthur’s heart ached. There was no doubting it. The woman was imprisoned here through magic. As for these snakes around them, Arthur concluded that they may be the woman’s underlings or help, somehow.
Arthur gazed back at the snakes, asking, “Are you saying that she is my mate?”
The snakes nodded their heads vigorously. Some formed letters in the nearby walls, saying: [Only our master’s true mate could free her from the shackles.]
[Go to her.]
[Save her.]
“Their master,” Arthur echoed. “Just who is this woman?”
