                    ~ King Arthur ~
First, he found it incredibly strange that the snakes insisted that he was the woman’s mate. However, he could not deny being drawn to her!
Out of nowhere, an inviting scent permeated his nose! It was earthy and slightly herbal, with a hint of camphor. The sweet fragrance carried a natural, grounding aroma that evoked images of wild, sun-drenched hillsides or ancient rituals by the fire.
“Sage,” Arthur muttered, taking a big whiff, and following his words, the snakes jumped in their places with their heads vigorously nodding.
Arthur focused his attention on the woman.
He could not look away!
His heart was beating so fast he had to soothe his chest with his hand.
Something about the woman made Arthur feel anxious. He was nervous and excited at the same time.
“Could she really be my mate?” Arthur asked. Sure, the initial feeling was there, but the real way to find out if she was his fated mate was through her eyes.
His body acted on its own and began stepping forward. However, Alpha Theo held him back, saying, “My King, let’s analyze the situation first.”
Theo felt the water’s temperature and said, “It’s a bit cold.”
“But even if we get to her, how can we save her? She is barricaded by magic?” Baron asked.
They all turned to the snakes for guidance, and almost every serpent simulated a biting motion. At first, Arthur and his group were confused, but later on, the snakes grouped in pairs, and one acted to bite the other.
“You - you want me to mark her?” Arthur asked, a little stupefied, and the snakes all nodded eagerly.
Then, to explain, the snakes formed words on the nearest wall again.
[A true mate’s mark will free our master.]
“O-o-o-k-a-a-a-a-y,” Arthur said reluctantly, his brow raising. “But what if you are lying, and she is not my mate?”
He laughed at himself, adding, “Why am I even listening to snakes?”
However, as Arthur spoke, he couldn’t shake his strong inkling about this woman from a distance. It was deeply connected to the emotions she stirred in him. He felt drawn to her, even though they hadn’t spoken or met before.
Undeniably, a deep part of him wanted to save her!
The snakes kept pointing at the woman, urging Arthur to go to her. Reluctantly, Arthur turned to his companions and said, “Well, we have to admit that the snakes have helped us get this far.”
“I’ll check the water’s depth first, My King,” Dunken offered. The warrior dipped into the water, swimming to the woman’s location. A few minutes later, Dunken returned to report, “It’s about ten feet deep. The water is cold, but it’s bearable.”
Dunken was walking back to them when Theo suggested, “We could form a pyramid and help King Arthur get up there, but should he really mark the woman? Why don’t we try to get her free first?”
The golden snakes became frantic, trying to explain something but couldn’t. Some wanted to spell it out, forming words on the wall.
[We tried.]
[Only she can break the spell.]
“She? I thought King Arthur was? And by the way, this is our king you are speaking to,” Theo said firmly to the serpents.
“I think they mean her,” Arthur interrupted, pointing to the woman floating in mid-air.
The snakes nodded and then began another set of charades. Instead of spelling out what they wanted to convey, they acted it.
Once again, the snakes acted out the marking process. The snake playing the woman’s role changed noticeably, becoming bolder and more confident. Its movements were smoother yet more powerful, as if it had been filled with some hidden energy. It lifted its head high, coiling its body tightly with controlled strength, giving off an air of authority. Even its eyes seemed sharper and more focused, as if it was drawing power from something much greater than itself.
Based on the serpents’ role-play, Arthur clarified, “Are you saying that by way of marking, your master can become strong? Strong enough to free herself from whatever spell is holding her prison?”
They all nodded, and again, some jumped in their places. A few even wrapped their golden bodies on Arthur’s legs. Their smiles and the gleam in their eyes were evident.
“Look, let’s just try it, everyone,” King Arthur suggested.
If only they could move stones or boulders, but they could not. Thus, they had to use their bodies to give Arthur the necessary height to level with the woman. They all practiced forming the pyramid on the cave’s grounds. Theo, Jacob, and Rollin formed the base.
Jacob’s leg was still bruised but could hold himself up under the water. At least, they were counting on that. As a backup plan, Caroline offered to help support Jacob. The second level was composed of Dunken and Baron. On the other hand, Arthur had the biggest challenge, climbing himself up to the two warriors. It took them an hour to find the right technique. They had also practiced in the water to help them adjust to the cold.
“Okay, let’s go and try this,” Arthur concluded, and they all swam out into the far end of the pool of water.
All the golden serpents watched them when they reached the targetted spot. Some had swam in their direction.
“Okay, let’s do this,” Theo ordered, and they all found their places. After Theo, Jacob, and Rollin formed the base while holding their breaths, Baron and Dunken climbed to the second level. King Arthur hurriedly made his way to the top.
For a fleeting moment, Arthur saw the woman’s face. He was still inches from the white light surrounding her, but she already held his gaze.
He was mesmerized by her!
Arthur suddenly forgot what he was supposed to do, and the delay caused one of the people at the bottom of the pyramid to swim to the surface. They all fell into the water.
“I’m sorry,” Rollin said. “I was already running out of air.”
“It’s okay,” Arthur responded. “Let’s take a break and try it once more.”
They attempted it twice before succeeding again. At that moment, Arthur did not waste time. Although the woman’s appearance still rendered him breathless, he stretched his hands to her.
He was cautious, fully aware of the white light. To his dismay, he wound up being sucked into the magic, and like the woman, he was also floating in mid-air.
At first, he screamed, startled by the pull. Then, he touched the white light that surrounded him and the woman. He realized something. “I’m trapped with her. I’m trapped!”
Arthur tried to kick and punch his way out of the white light, but it was useless! There was no way of breaking free!
He used his claws, and most of his werewolf strength, but the results were the same. He repeated, “I’m stuck here.”
“Maybe we made a mistake!” Rollin growled below.
“What are we going to do now?” Caroline asked while swimming in the water.
Theo and the others panicked. They all turned to the snakes, but the golden serpents simultaneously simulated the marking process.
“They want me to mark her,” Arthur said.
Again, the snakes nodded.
Arthur gulped and turned to the woman. Like him, she was floating within the white light. The only difference was that her limbs were further chained by another type of energy, which was connected to the magic around them.
Being close to her, he could tell she was about thirty years old in werewolf age. Her human age could be around seventy. As for witches, he had no idea. Witches could live for decades and still look young due to their magic.
Now that Arthur was much closer to her, the scent of sage completely engulfed him as if sending him into dreamland.
“Lady, you are indeed so beautiful,” he admitted. “I certainly hope this risk is all worth it.”
He thought about things that were at stake.
They were in another nation to which they had no connections. Their only help so far was the golden snakes. Should he die, what will become of Northern Alfar?
Arthur glanced down at Theo and ordered, “Theo, if I am wrong about this, leave me. Go and find Gwen. Tell my brother I love him and… take care of Northern Alfar.”
Again, Arthur caught the snakes rolling their eyes. They simulated the marking process again, some spelling the words that read: [Trust us. Mark her!]
The snakes had balls!
Arthur did not know whether to laugh or be angry at the snakes, but given the situation, he really did not have a choice. He seemed stuck there, and his only chance of freedom was this exquisite woman.
“Here goes nothing,” Arthur muttered. He cupped the woman’s face with one hand, the other resting on her neck.
His eyes landed on the pules in the woman’s veins, further drawing him in. Her scent was entirely intoxicating.
Arthur let out his fangs. He hesitated but soon sunk his teeth into her.
It was… amazing!
To him, her blood tasted so sweet! His eyes glowed, wanting to deepen the bite further, and before he knew it, a sudden, powerful energy burst out of the woman in his arms!
“Ahhh!”
