~ King Arthur ~
Half an hour through their run, Aurora had awakened. However, she was still weak. At the very least, she could hold on to Arthur as she rode on his back. They encountered five rogues after another ten minutes. They were Victoria’s men, but their fighting skills were no match for Rollin and Caroline.
As Arthur sped, Caroline and Rollin were head to head with the enemies. With one glance, Arthur saw how Caroline had her jaws on one foe’s neck, and Rollin had tossed one lifeless rogue on the ground!
Jacob tailed behind Arthur, securing Arthur’s blind side.
“Watch out, Your Highness!” Jacob suddenly barked.
Arthur turned to his right and noticed another rogue in mid-air. He quickly shifted into his human form, catching Aurora in his arms. He landed her carefully on the ground before jumping in the enemy’s direction, already in his wolf form.
Howls and growls echoed in the air as another fight ensued. Fortunately for Arthur’s group, their skills were superior. The rogues quickly lost their lives, and they returned to their journey again.
“It’s strange. Why are there only rogues coming after us,” Aurora softly spoke behind Arthur. Sadly, they had no answer to her question.
By the time King Arthur and Aurora arrived at the house, no one was around. Eerie silence lingered in the air under the early heat of the sun.
‘Have they all fled?” Aurora muttered.
King Arthur squinted. Along the way, they came across empty houses as well. It was bizarre how Blackpelt Ridge seemed like a ghost town.
Aurora’s home was a three-story red brick house overgrown with moss, giving it an ancient feel. Surrounding the house was a wild yet purposeful garden swarming with herbs, flowers, and magical plants.
They soon met with the others. Theo had rushed from inside, carrying a frail male who was wounded and had dirt on their face. Dunken followed, carrying another female.
“Malrick, Selara?” Aurora called. She turned to Arthur and explained, “They are the witches that had served me in the past.”
“Master, is that you?” The female witch in Dunken’s arms cried, seeing Aurora. “You are finally free!”
“They were locked up in the dungeons below the house,” Dunken explained. “We fought a few rogues and some other witches, but their magic was not strong enough to hold us down.”
“We have looked everywhere,” Theo said. “Baron is going for another round of checking. We found traces of Gwen’s blood, her belongings, but my wife - she - she isn’t here.”
Together, they searched the property again, even as far as a mile from Aurora’s home. They encountered other settlers hiding in their homes, but sadly, no clues led to Gwen’s whereabouts.
Theo was devastated. It wasn’t until later that night that they finally pieced together what had occurred in Blackpelt Ridge.
Under the night sky, the locals lit a bonfire for everyone to gather in front of the brick house. They sat in wooden chairs, some on the logs nearby. Theo and his men stood up. Aurora and Arthur sat closer to the witches that she personally knew.
There were about fifteen locals, including Aurora’s witches. They each shared their experiences one by one.
“Victoria and many of her underlings left the other day,” one local human revealed. “Only those rogue guards were left to watch over the old brick house.”
“Victoria runs a company in the capital. She only comes here if she is doing something illegal or unspeakable,” Selara suggested.
“Selara and I are the only witches left,” Malrick, the warlock, shared. “Others have fled to other towns, even in the further nations, because Victoria had led over Blackpelt Ridge. She had invited rogues to secure the town, and we were not strong enough to fight her.”
“For those of us who remained in Blackpelt Ridge,” a local human said. “We simply don’t have anywhere else to go. Even if Victoria was cruel, she did not hurt us as long as we did not interfere with whatever she was doing. Besides, Victoria rarely comes here. She is often in the city - the capital.”
“Some of us were forced to work under her because she threatened our families. Over time and without practice, our magic depleted,” Selera added. “Malrick and I were aware of the woman named Gwen - the one she had recently taken. We tried to convince her to release the woman, but -”
With a look of regret, Selera added, “She locked us up instead.”
“You said they left the other day. Has any one of you noticed them taking my wife?” Theo inquired with a pained expression.
“All we heard was that they were taking her to the city,” Malrick responded.
“Then, we shall go to the city,” Theo concluded firmly. “We should go tomorrow -”
“Hold on.” Still weak, Aurora said, “You can’t reveal yourself to King Theron. You said this to me, so you had risked going through the caves.”
“Can you still feel your wife alive, Alpha Theo?” Aurora inquired.
Theo nodded, and then Aurora suggested, “Then, give me at least two days to recuperate, all of us. I will prepare potions to conceal our scents. And only then shall we leave for the capital.”
“But -”
Theo tried to object, but Aurora said, “We can’t engage in war unprepared, Theo. Trust me. You need me there. Don’t forget, only I can remove the Twin Vorax Ari. If you reveal yourself to Victoria, she will harm your son.”
“Listen to my mate, Theo,” Arthur said. “I agree with her. Let us all rest. We can leave for New Arcadia’s capital when we have fully regained our strengths.”
~ Unknown Pov ~
“You took - blood!”
“I had to! It was - only way - work!”
“If she - wake up - deal is off!”
A woman with golden hair winced in her sleep. She could hear voices around her that she snapped her head in the other direction. She felt vulnerable, barely able to lift a finger. With all her might, she forced her eyes open. She saw an overbearing man before her and another woman who looked elegant with white hair.
She tried to put names on their faces, but she could not figure out who they were. Faintly, she asked, “Who - who are you?”
Then, awareness suddenly came to her. She also did not know who she was!
That realization gave her a boost of energy. She sat up, wide-eyed, asking in a panic, “Who - who am I? Where - where am I?”
The authoritative man looked at her with a shocked expression. Then, his gaze turned soft. He slowly approached the bed and sat next to her. With his dark brown eyes staring straight at her, he said, “Gwen, your name is Gwen. And I, I am Theron. You are… my fiance. And I am the love of your life.”
The man named Theron hugged her tightly and said, “Thank the goddess; you are okay.”
