~ King Theron ~
“No!” Theron jerked awake after sensing his men break from his bond. “Victoria, you!”
He promptly changed into his clothes. He rushed outside, where his beta awaited. The beta reported, “The men who assisted the witch Victoria are mostly dead now, Your Highness. I can only sense Dwake and Valor alive, but they are weak.”
“Who attacked Cedarwall, Dwake? Answer me!” Theron mindlinked with his warrior while speaking his thoughts.
“I have tried to reach out to them, My King, but they are too weak to respond,” Theron’s beta said. “All that we know is that the Grand Witch, Aurora, is back, and she had led the attack. They have fought with a few rogues, which are said to be Victoria’s men. They had also fought with some of our warriors on patrol. They are now within the capital. Our men had lost track of them, but I think they are headed this way.”
“The Grand Witch is powerful and has given her companions a significant advantage in fighting. Our men could not identify who she was with, but Aurora had werewolves fighting with her,” the beta added.
Theron’s hands balled into fists. He said, “If the Grand Witch’s enemy is Victoria, why is she coming for us?”
“We don’t know, My King,” the beta responded. “Maybe she is angry that we have assisted Victoria?”
Theron turned on his heel, ready to leave the palace. As he seethed through the halls, he asked, “Any word of Victoria?”
“We have not heard from the witch, Your Highness,” the beta said.
A hiss left Theron’s lips. He stilled and thought about Gwen. If Victoria is gone, how can he take Gwen?
Theron was suddenly second-guessing his plans. He mused, ‘Maybe he should have his way with Gwen while there was still time.’
Unfortunately for him, his beta said, “My King, your people need you. What is your command?”
Left with no choice, he said, “Let’s search for our intruders! Alert everyone!”
It was an hour past midnight. Everyone should be resting, but to Theron’s dismay, the capital had been invaded.
Theron had gathered some of his warriors outside his palace. They were about ready to leave when suddenly, they noticed a bright light on the palace’s second level! They were all alerted, realizing that the Grand Witch and whoever her companions were had already penetrated inside!
“Go back! Go back inside!” King Theron commanded.
Theron himself shifted into his wolf form. He used his werewolf speed to catch up with the intruders. He gritted his teeth, thinking, ‘Portals and witches. Only a powerful witch could create portals.’
“Your Highness, they have entered the third quarters,” one maid fearfully reported.
“Which quarters?” Theron barked. He had reached the second floor when he received the report.
“The same floor where your new guest is staying,” the maid responded.
Theron’s blood boiled. He muttered, “Gwen. Are they after Gwen?”
He picked up the pace. His brindle brown wolf ran like the wind to the third floor. By the time he reached Gwen’s room, he had kicked it open with his paws, and just as he feared, he saw Gwen in Alpha Theo’s arms.
Theo stood by the window, the Grand Witch at his side. In his arms, Gwen lay unconscious, her deep, unresponsive state making it evident to Theron that she had been put to sleep by force. Theo’s voice was cold as he declared, “For taking my wife and conspiring with Victoria, I will ensure you pay. But for now, we are leaving.”
It was the first time Theron had laid eyes on the Grand Witch, but there was no doubting the kind of aura that surrounded her. In his mind, he said, ‘So this is Aurora Windmere, the powerful witch who disappeared over fifty years ago.’
Theron was about to negotiate when a swirling light suddenly surrounded them. The witch had created a portal for their exit, and in a split second, they were gone.
So much for his chance of mating with a beauty like Gwen. Now, he had more significant problems. With Alpha Theo discovering his wife in his palace, there was a chance that his country would be at war with Northern Alfar.
~ Theo ~
Theo had gone through so much fighting in the last two hours since arriving at Cedarwall. Thankfully, none within his group had been badly hurt. It was all thanks to King Arthur’s mate, the Grand Witch, Aurora.
Not only had she devised tricks and spells to distract their enemies and block their connection with King Theron, but she had also kept their identities a secret. For that reason, Theo believed King Theron was complacent. Of course, if he had known it was Theo and King Arthur invading Cedarwall, King Theron might have hidden Gwen once again.
Earlier, they had encountered a palace guard while navigating the capital. Aurora had used a spell on him and forced information on Gwen’s whereabouts. That was how they had decided to split the group.
King Arthur and the rest of their company created a diversion. At the same time, Theo and Aurora used the portal to enter the palace. Following the royal guard’s instruction, they quickly found Gwen’s quarters. It also helped that Theo sensed their mate bond, and his wife’s lilac scent.
The second Theo and Aurora entered Gwen’s room, she woke up startled.
Theo expected a cry, a warm hug, and a kiss from his beloved wife, but to his shock, Gwen cried, “You! How dare you! What are you doing here!”
“Gwen, of course, I am here to save you,” Theo responded, his head spinning in confusion.
“Save me? After you had kidnapped me and caused my memory loss? I know who you are. You are Theo, my ex-mate! You had rejected me! Leave me and Theron alone!” Gwen snapped. She jumped out of bed and retreated to the windows.
“Memory loss? Gwen, no! It’s me! I’m your husband, Theo,” he explained. “I don’t know what Theron said to you, but it’s the other way around! He kidnapped you!”
“Looks like she had lost her memories. Maybe it’s Victoria’s doing,” Aurora said behind Theo. “We don’t have much time to reason with her. We need to leave -”
“I’m not leaving with you!” Gwen growled. She tried to shift, but Theo could tell she was too weak. Instead, she fell on the floor, gasping for air.
Aurora then cast a spell on Gwen, making her lose consciousness. In seconds, she lay on the floor with her eyes shut.
Theo quickly grabbed Gwen, and Theron found them just as they were about to leave. Seeing the New Arcadian king, Theo burned in anger. He wondered what evil things he had done to his wife!
However, it wasn’t the time to seek revenge. They needed to get Gwen out of there fast and return to Northern Alfar. Aurora created a portal for them to leave, and just as they were being sucked into that swirling void, he said to King Theron, “This isn’t over! I’ll come back for you!”
An hour later, they had made it back to Blackpelt Ridge. Aurora could no longer use the portal to take them out of New Arcadia. Taking everyone back to the old brick house was the best that Aurora could do. She had exhausted her powers. Thus, a proper rest was necessary.
Aurora assured them that even if Theron would suspect her old hometown to be their hideout, it would take the royal guards at least two days to turn up. So, everyone rested with ease for the next ten hours.
Sadly for Theo, when Gwen awoke beside her next, she attacked him!
