~ Gwen ~
“You are pale and thin, and you have many needle marks on your arm,” the woman named Aurora said. “They have extracted too much blood from you.”
Gwen should have thought about it carefully. She had seen the wounds on her arm, but when she woke up in Theron’s palace, she was more worried about the fact that she remembered nothing. For a second, she stared at her arms.
She glanced at Baron and then at Jacob and Theo. There were others in the room. There was Caroline. She was Theo’s sister and Jacob’s mate. Then, a king of Northern Alfar named Arthur. They had concerned looks on their faces.
Gwen felt the sincerity in their every reaction.
“This was Victoria’s doing. We all know how she was related to Hazel. All she wanted was Gwen’s blood!” Theo said. “If I could kill her again, I would!”
“It’s enough that she is gone,” Aurora said. “At least we don’t have to deal with her anymore.”
“Hazel?” Gwen asked. “Who is Hazel.”
It was King Arthur who explained about Hazel. So, apparently, Hazel was Gwen’s aunt. The same woman had kidnapped Gwen as a baby and left her to be raised by a ruthless alpha named Lucius. The same man had killed Theo’s father, Caroline’s family, and many more. Resentment arose, and because everyone thought Gwen was Lucius’ daughter, they all hated her in the past.
“It was one of a few obstacles that hindered me from loving you back then,” Theo admitted. “And again, I’m sorry. I bore so much pain because of Lucius and could not see right.”
“It’s the same with me, Gwen,” Caroline spoke, regret written all over her face.
“But things have changed. You have forgiven Theo and the entire pack,” Jacob revealed. “I was against it at first - “
“Even I,” Baron added. “But we saw through Theo’s sincerity to protect you and Ian. All is forgiven, and we have all moved on.”
“Now, the question remains: why has Gwen not recovered her memories?” King Arthur asked. “It would be a lot easier if Gwen remembers.”
“Gwen, you said you only noticed your mating mark today, right?” Aurora asked. When Gwen nodded, Aurora explained, “In that case, it’s likely that Victoria sealed both your memories and the mark. When she died, the seal broke, but because your body is still so weak, you haven’t been able to recover your memories yet.”
Looking at the others, Aurora said, “I believe Gwen will regain her memory once her body replenishes her lost blood. I’m not sure how long that will take. We should take her to the hospital to determine the extent of her blood loss. In the meantime, we can support her recovery with nutritious food to aid blood regeneration.”
“Blood regeneration. I would need a lot of sleep, plenty of water, iron-rich food, and maybe a dose of erythropoietin,” Gwen muttered. Then, she frowned and asked, “Erythropoietin? Why do I know this?”
“Becuase, Sweetheart, you are a doctor,” Theo revealed.
Gwen’s eyes widened. She smiled and echoed, “I’m a doctor?”
“Yes, Gwen, and I am your assistant,” Jacob revealed. “Listen to your inklings. Being a medical doctor is in your blood. Unfortunately, we don’t have any medical supplies here.”
“Don’t worry, Gwen,” Theo moved closer and held her hand. At first, Gwen instinctively pulled her hand back, but Theo held it tightly. She no longer resisted. “As soon as we get home, I’ll have the best doctors check on you, and if not that, the love of our children will make you remember. I’m sure of it!”
‘Children. That’s right. I had children with Theo,’ Gwen mused. ‘They... said.’
Theo and the others had not brought their mobiles with them. From what Theo had shared, they had entered New Arcadia into a secret passage beneath the ground, and many of the passages were underwater.
Needless to say, it was impractical for them to bring mobiles, but that would have helped. If there were pictures of Gwen and her family, that would have easily convinced her.
‘I’m torn,’ Gwen said to herself. ‘I feel the family bond between me and Baron, but I can’t fully give my trust because I can’t remember.’
Nevertheless, Gwen had no choice. They were the only ones whom she could rely on.
After that meeting with Aurora, Gwen continued to receive full details of her kidnapping and her life. However, there was only so much that she could take, one at a time. So, after an hour, she decided to take a break.
Soon, they all gathered before the brick house, where a long table had been set for lunch. The townspeople helped prepare a feast of iron-rich food for Gwen.
Theo was very attentive. He sat beside her to prepare the food on her plate and soup in her bowl. She thought it was strange. Theo had a domineering aura like Theron, but here he was, serving her food.
‘Wait, but didn’t Theron do the same?’ While Gwen thought this, she also considered there was something more special about the way Theo treated her.
“They have very good spinach here. You always like to feed Ian spinach,” Theo said while pouring a soup made of mixed vegetables. “But back home, you love to make chicken soup. Have some.”
Theo then brushed his fingers over Gwen’s face. That act alone made her skin form happy bumps, and butterflies in her stomach ran wild. Yes, it was undeniable how they were… fated mates.
“You lost so much weight in just a few days.” Anger burned in Theo’s eyes, his teeth gritting as he said, “If only Victoria had not taken you. You sacrificed so much.”
Gwen recalled how Theo recounted her kidnapping. She asked, “Ian - is Ian safe? So, the creature, the twin - what is it?”
“Vorax Ari,” Theo answered. “According to Aurora, since the older twin died, the one in Ian’s arm should be dead. Before finding you, we made a phone call using the mobiles from one of King Theron’s warriors. So, the doctors should have already taken care of it.”
“I see. I - I really want to see my - I mean, our children,” she said while averting his gaze. “You could have brought one of those phones with you.”
“I - it wasn’t my priority then, but don’t worry, I’m sure our children are safe. My mother is with them, and your parents had flown over to Port Leon to look after them,” Theo assured her.
In the next few minutes, they filled their stomachs. Everyone was hungry, and Gwen could understand why. As she ate, she wound up studying Theo.
Gwen could not help but admire Theo. His features were perfectly balanced, and his jawlines were strong. His piercing green eyes seemed to hold both depth and warmth. Whenever he smiled, laugh lines appeared on his face. They seemed like dimples that added to his good looks.
‘Wow, did I really marry him? How lucky could I be?’ She thought to herself, her brows meeting.
Theo caught her staring at him, and instantly, her heart skipped a beat, her face blushing.
“Gwen, are you shy around your husband?” Jacob teased. He was seated in front of her and had caught her red-handed.
“No, she was crushing on her husband,” Caroline suggested, winking at Gwen with a sly grin.
Theo laughed. His manly voice echoed in the air. He put his arm around Gwen, saying, “Do not make Gwen uncomfortable. In any case, she has every right to do what she wants with me.”
“That’s right,” King Arthur said in his seat. “They are married, after all.”
“Oh, I almost forgot,” Theo suddenly said. He fished inside his trouser pocket and gave Gwen two rings. “Give me your hand.”
Gwen instinctively gave him her left hand. Theo inserted a diamond ring and said, “This is a family heirloom. My mother used to wear this. I was so relieved when we found this in the brick house while searching for you a few days ago.”
Then, he inserted another ring. It looked like a band ring. “And this is our wedding ring.” With a smile, Theo added, “A symbol of our union and love.”
“Of course.” Theo reached for the other side of her neck and said, “The most evident symbol is our mating mark.”
Gwen touched the mark on her neck, accidentally brushing her hand against Theo’s. Like an electric charge, a spark of static surged through their touch. She turned to face Theo, and for a few intense seconds, their eyes locked. Her cheeks flushed, and the heat rose steadily until it burned all the way to her ears.
Thud-thud.
Thud-thud.
She felt silly like a teenage girl having her first crush. ‘Oh, my heart.’
