                    ~ Gwen ~
In the community grounds, Gwen kneeled under the moonlight’s gaze, her head up in the night sky. Her hands were clasped together near her chest. She began praying, “Oh, Eternal Moon Goddess, Keeper of the Night, and Protector of the Pack, I humbly stand before your radiant light, seeking your divine guidance and blessing.”
Behind Gwen were the pack members. Theo’s mother and Ian were there. They all echoed Gwen’s words.
“Tonight, Theo, Baron, King Arthur, and King Alexander will lead their warriors into the storm of war against New Arcadia.” Gwen resumed. “Grant them the strength of the mighty wolf, the fox’s cunning ways, and the lion’s courage. Let their instincts be sharp, their decisions wise, and their heart steadfast. Shield them, Moon Goddess, with your silver light so no blade nor treachery may harm them.”
It had been a week since Theo left Port Leon, but his initial parting was meant to prepare an entire army of warriors within Northern Alfar. After a three-day briefing, Theo’s group had secretly passed through the tunnels beneath the cliffs of New Arcadia, and that day marked their official entry to the enemy’s territory. Thus. Gwen had gathered everyone in the pack to pray for Theo and all of his men.
It wasn’t just Northern Alfar’s warriors, but all warriors within their alliance. In southern Alfar, Gwen’s brother, Baron, led a platoon of purple-eyed warriors at the front. He would fight alongside King Arthur’s men and the other werewolves from Dunswik and Lupin Falls.
“Bless their warriors who march by their side,” Gwen continued. “They carry not just weapons but the weight of their families and the hopes of our kind. May they fight with honor, unity, and purpose, always guided by your wisdom. Let their spirits remain unbroken, even in the fiercest of battles.”
Gwen closed her eyes and concluded her prayer, saying, “I ask for your mercy, Great Goddess, not for victory alone but a swift end to bloodshed. May peace find its way to both sides and may justice and balance prevail. With all the devotion of our hearts, we thank you, Moon Goddess, for your endless protection and grace. May your blessing shine upon us always.”
After the prayer, Gwen smiled and turned to everyone. She told the people, “But we know our alpha will triumph. It is in Theo’s blood, and while we wait for his return, let us continue to live harmoniously in Port Leon, thrive in our daily lives, and protect our loved ones.”
“Well said, Gwen,” Catherine said with a smile. She approached Gwen and offered an embrace, “Spoken like a true luna that you are.”
Gwen knew that communication with Theo would be seldom that at that point, but there was no point in worrying excessively. Gwen knew she had to be the pack’s source of strength, along with the elders and Brody, who remained to look over the pack.
In the days that followed, Gwen kept herself busy. She reopened her clinic, now located in Port Leon, and, in addition to treating patients, Gwen began training warriors in the art of medical practice. She was determined to create more medical warriors, and some of them could pursue medicine and practice it as a profession.
However, while Theo was away, it wasn’t at all peaceful. A small group of rogues had attempted to attack Port Leon, but they were wrong to think that without the alpha, Gwen was not strong enough to defend the pack.
One evening, while Gwen was overseeing an invasion on their southern border, two rogues ran past Port Leon’s warriors.
“She is the luna! Get her! If we get her, we can take her as a hostage!” one rogue claimed.
Gwen was twenty meters from Brody, but she did not call for help. Instead, she allowed the rogues to lunge toward her. Just when one was half a meter close, Gwen slid to the ground and thrust her moonstone blade out. She quickly cut through one adversary’s chest, leading him to bleed the second he landed on the ground.
The other rogue had also leaped in the air. He witnessed his companion being cut in the chest. Gwen saw the shock on his face. He looked like he wanted to retreat, but while he was suspended in the air, Gwen moved in his direction and did not spare the rogue! She cut through his frame, and the scoundrel died in an instant.
After dealing with the rogues, she watched over the remaining fight. She let one rogue survive, leaving a warning to other rogues who intended to take advantage of Theo’s absence. She grabbed the surviving rogue by the neck and fiercely said, “Remember this, Port Leon’s strength does not only lie on the alpha. The warriors themselves are strong! Our beta is strong, and as you can see, I can defend myself too. Do not ever come back and make trouble in our pack!”
After the rogue fled, Gwen’s body trembled. She grumbled, “My Goddess, it was so hard to act tough.”
“Haha! I think you did a great job, Luna,” Brody said behind her. “I felt the fierceness in your tone. I think they won’t bother us anymore.”
“I’ll practice a little more, including some moves,” Gwen said with a smile. “How about I learn something from the great beta?”
“I’ll be glad to teach you a thing or two. Maybe share one of my best techniques with the luna,” Brody said confidently. “Maybe Alpha Theo will finally leave the pack to you and let me join all the fun -”
“Haha!” Gwen laughed her heart out. Brody had been complaining about being left out. Somehow, she understood. Being a beta had its disadvantages.
From initiating programs to handling a rising threat, Gwen moved on to dealing with internal conflicts within the pack. In the later days, a dispute arose between two wealthy families that handled most of their trade businesses, and it was up to Gwen to settle the matter while Theo was away.
The Millers, who managed 20% of the trade, proposed hiring port employees outside the pack. This was due to the gradual shift among the members of Port Leon toward more professional career paths over the years. Rather than remaining porters, many had chosen to become warriors, doctors, teachers, and other professionals. As a result, there was a significant reduction in the labor force for manual work.
However, the Everetts, owning 10% of the trade, opposed the idea. The family suggested that bringing in outsiders involved too much risk.
The dispute created a massive rift between families, and many were forced to take sides. Gwen had to step in. She called both families for a meeting, inviting all the elders and Brody. She listened to both sides and said to the Millers, “I hear your concerns, Mr. Miller. Loyalty and secrecy are vital to our survival. But if we limit ourselves to only our pack, we may fall behind in a changing world. A good example is Southern Alfar. It is more developed when it comes to infrastructure and foreign technology.”
“King Alexander has opened his country to many foreign workers and investments. Southern Alfar isn’t perfect, though. When my son got kidnapped, I realized that stricter policy must be implemented when allowing foreigners into the nation.” Gwen smiled and suggested, “Here is what I propose.”
“We will only hire those who meet our highest standards. Not only will we require extensive verification of an outsider’s background, but we will also limit their actress. They won’t learn anything about our trade secrets.” Gwen turned to the head of the Millers and said, “If we do this, we will also help other pack members who require employment.”
Let’s test this idea on a small scale. If it doesn’t work or causes issues, we’ll reevaluate,” Gwen pushed. “We can start with allied packs.”
It was the first time Gwen had to mediate between influential families within the pack, and to her, it felt great being able to help Theo and be entrusted with this task. So, when both parties agreed, Gwen felt completely accomplished. At the end of the meeting, the elders praised her.
“Good job, Luna, you are genuinely adapting to your role,” Elder Odessa said.
Catherine embraced Gwen, saying, “I’m proud of you, and Theo would be proud of you too. You have outdone yourself.”
“Thank you, Mother, I appreciate it,” Gwen said. Tears welled in her eyes as she hugged back.
Days passed again.
One evening, Gwen awoke to the sound of her phone ringing. She realized she had fallen asleep with Lilac on her chest. After placing her daughter in the crib, she answered the call. It was Theo.
“Do you miss me?” Theo said.
“Theo, I haven’t heard from you in a week. How are things going?” Gwen asked softly. “How are things in New Arcadia? I hope King Theron would just surrender -”
“I have a surprise for you,” Theo said.
“Theo, tell me bout your condition there first,” Gwen insisted.
“Ask about the surprise first,” Theo said.
Gwen rolled her eyes. She walked closer to the window of the master bedroom and said, “Fine, what is it?”
“Open the window,” Theo said, and upon hearing that, her heart galloped.
Gwen promptly opened the window, and to her shock, Theo stood by the driveway with his phone up! She said, “How did you disguise your scent?”
Theo laughed, saying, “I had a little help from a powerful witch. Guess what? The war is over.”
With a playful voice, he added, “It’s time for baby number three.”
