~ Gwen ~
Her question took Theo aback. His eyes rounded, and he replied angrily, “Don’t tell me you have fallen for me. Have you gone mad?”
Gwen reasoned, “But we -”
“But what? I fucked you?” Theo asked. “I only did that out of obligation! Wake up, Gwen. Remember that your father murdered my father!”
“I will never love you!” Through gritted teeth, he declared.
There it was again—the reminder that would forever scar her heart, the main reason Theo would never reciprocate her feelings.
“But what about the prophecy?” Gwen asked. Tears stung her eyes as she waited for his response.
“It’s not going to happen!” Theo snapped. "We are getting a divorce, and that is final! Go to your room and sleep. You have duties to fulfill tomorrow. I will inform the elders of my decision in the next meeting, and we will soon discuss the terms of our divorce.”
He walked past her and angrily voiced, “And enough about the prophecy. Don’t hold on to it because Agatha is no longer here to save you!”
At the mention of the departed elder, Gwen acknowledged. Yes, it was true. Agatha saved her.
Agatha was not just an elder in Port Leon but also a seer. She had prophesied future events, but her insights were not always straightforward. Sometimes, they came in broken visions, like pieces of a puzzle that Agatha and the other elders had to put together. Nonetheless, her visions had always been right.
Three years ago, it was said that Agatha foresaw the war coming to Port Leon, but the former alpha did not take her warning to heart. As a result, they were unprepared for the neighboring pack’s attack.
Port Leon Pack became slaves to Lucius Darwin, the ruthless neighboring alpha, who happened to be Gwen’s father. Lucius killed the former alpha and tortured his family, including Gwen’s husband, the current alpha, Theo Erhart. However, like many oppressive conquerors, Lucius’ rule ended with a rebellion.
It was Theo who killed Lucius Darwin. Gwen, being Lucius’ daughter, would have suffered the same fate if not for Agatha’s insight.
Gwen remembered the day her father died.
FLASHBACK
A year ago, when Lucius Darwin died, angry warriors of Port Leon surrounded Gwen outside the packhouse. They wanted justice for the many lives that were lost at the hands of her father. They all blamed her, thinking she had a hand in it. After all, she was Lucius’ daughter.
“How could you live in luxury? How could you feed off Port Leon’s prosperous trade when many of our family died?”
“Kill her! Kill her too! She is Lucius’ daughter!”
“Do you know what your warriors did? They murdered my husband and my child? I’ll kill you!” Theo’s sister, Caroline Erhart, screamed in anger!
“No, please! I swear, I did not want any of this!” Gwen pleaded because, truthfully, she was innocent. Her only fault was having a cruel father like Lucius Darwin.
“I’ll kill you!” Caroline thrust a silver blade in her direction.
In her efforts to elude the blade, Gwen accidentally locked eyes with Elder Agatha Sanger, and a new prophecy came to light.
Agatha’s eyes suddenly turned white, and her former black hair slowly became gray. Everyone, including Gwen, became aware of the elder’s changes, and they stopped to listen to her words.
“A woman with purple eyes will unite our lands and give birth to powerful heirs who will lead the nation,” Agatha declared.
That was Agatha’s prediction of Gwen, and that was how her life was saved.
Because of Agatha’s foresight, it was decided that Gweneth Darwin, a she-wolf with purple eyes, would become the Luna of Port Leon. The elders forced Gwen and Theo to marry, believing that their union would lead to the pack’s prosperity, maybe even lead the nation of Northern Alfar.
Yes, Gwen escaped death. Yes, she became the Luna, but Port Leon Pack despised her. Theo was her husband. Together, they perform their duties as the alpha and luna of the pack, but Theo never marked her.
Gwen was Port Leon’s unloved luna.
Port Leon belonged to Northern Alfar, and throughout the land, Gwen was the only she-wolf known to have purple-colored eyes.
Theo and his family had tried to oppose Elder Agatha’s wisdom. They secretly searched high and low for other she-wolves with unique eye colors, but there were none. Even Gwen did not know why her eyes were purple when her father had brown eyes. She never met her mother, but according to Lucius, her mother had gray eyes.
Nonetheless, her eyes spared her life, and Gwen was thankful to have them.
END OF FLASHBACK
Back to the present.
That night was another sleepless one for Gwen. It had been the case since Agatha was found dead in the woods two nights ago.
In her room, Gwen lay in her bed with her broken heart.
She recalled her father and his evil deeds.
Memories of her being whipped flooded her mind. She remembered how Lucius starved her when she did not follow his rules. She cried at the recollection of her being locked up in dungeons together with her father’s prisoners.
The truth was, even Gwen did not escape Lucius’ wrath, but Port Leon never knew this. She tried to tell them, but they never believed her.
Gwen’s face was awash with tears with these memories. She looked up, imagining the Moon Goddess above. She questioned, “Why? Why did you give me Lucius as my father? Please help me, Moon Goddess; you must have a reason for giving me this fate.”
“Please, do not forsake me.”
The following day, Gwen joined a medical mission alongside Port Leon’s hospital healthcare workers. If there was one thing that could take her mind off her worries, it was helping others become healthy.
Before her father died, Gwen began to study medicine. It was her passion. With Agatha’s help, she was able to continue her studies while performing her luna duties.
One could say that Gwen had the skills of a medical genius. She could quickly evaluate symptoms and identify ailments, which granted her a seat to shadow doctors at Port Leon General Hospital.
The healthcare workers treated her with a subtle distinction. They refrained from openly expressing dislike towards her, showing a degree of openness despite her status as the enemy’s daughter.
“Luna Gwen, can you look at this child? His mother has been complaining about the rash on his skin,” a nurse approached Gwen, bringing a seven-year-old boy.
Gwen studied the child’s body, and after a while, she said, “It’s skin asthma.” She patted the boy’s head and described, “It happens occasionally. Some children are more sensitive than others.”
“We have anti-inflammatories and some gentle wash for him,” Gwen said with a smile.
The boy accepted the bag of soap and the medication, but he never smiled back at Gwen. He got up and searched inside his trouser pocket. Then, he suddenly threw an egg at Gwen! He yelled, “We don’t want you as our Luna! My father died fighting against Alpha Lucius! I hate you!”
He even spat at Gwen, making her scream.
“Oh, my goddess! Luna Gwen came here to offer help! You could at least hold your tongue, boy!” One nurse scolded.
Sadly, the boy ran away with her mother without care, and the pack members who lined up for the consultation only stood by and watched; some laughed.
The nurse who was with Gwen helped wipe the egg stain on her clothes. Gwen was cleaning off her face when she felt the need to throw up. She did not like the smell of raw eggs!
She was heaving so badly that she ran to the nearest tree and emptied her stomach. After that, she leaned on the tree, feeling like she was about to lose consciousness. ‘What is happening to me?’
“Are you okay, Luna?” The nurse asked.
“I - I don’t know -” Gwen tried to keep her eyes open, but her awareness quickly left her.
