"Grandma and Grandpa are going to be here with you and bring you to school," Gwen gasped before hugging her son. "I'm going to miss you, Ian. I've never been this far apart from you."
Gwen wept as she embraced her son. She kissed his cheek, and when she let go of him, Ian was teary-eyed. Her son asked, "Can I come with you, Mommy?"
"You - you can't," Gwen answered. "It's a tiring journey, and you have school."
"Where are you going again?" Ian asked, his green eyes flickered with sadness.
"To Northern Alfar," Gwen replied.
"Is that where my dad is?" Ian asked, shocking Gwen completely.
"Um. Where did you hear that from?" Gwen asked.
Ian heaved a sigh. He answered, "Uncle Baron said something about seeing my dad on the trip, and he would punch him in the face. Is my dad that bad, Mommy?"
Gwen's mouth fell on the floor. She swore she was going to punch Baron herself!
All these years, Gwen had struggled to talk about Theo to her son. So, she had told him that he had abandoned them. However, with her son's growing curiosity over his father, Gwen wished she had said that Theo had died!
'Is Ian's father that bad?' Gwen asked herself. She gulped and replied, "Honestly, no, he isn't. He is good to others, but... we just did not get along. We were forced to marry. That was the big mistake from the start."
"Forced to marry? Why? Did my dad never love me?" Ian inquired.
The question hurt, even for Gwen. How was she supposed to explain that Theo did not believe Ian was his?
"I wish I could tell you more, but it's too complicated. Maybe when you are older? We can talk about it again," Gwen requested before hugging Ian. "For now, can you focus on being the great warrior that you are?"
When Gwen pulled away again, she revealed, "Grandpa is enrolling you in a junior fighting course here in the city. And you are going to train with Grandpa! Wouldn't that be great?"
"Really?" That made Ian happy. His eyes lit up as he exclaimed, "I'd love that!"
"Hiya! Hiya!" He started showing off his moves, and it made Gwen giggle.
Since Ian turned three, Gwen and her family have noticed his interest in learning how to fight. His little self often watched the warriors at the training grounds, and he followed their actions.
At four, he learned basic martial arts from Baron, and when he turned five, he was running with his grandpa into the forest—and my goddess, he could keep up!
Whenever he wrestled with Baron and Jacob, Ian would hurt their ribs or faces. Just two weeks ago, Baron had a bruise on his face, and it was Ian's doing. Baron grumbled back then, saying, "I swear to the Goddess, when Ian turns eighteen, I'm going to hit back."
Of course, Gwen's brother received a good amount of scolding from her and their parents after he said those words.
All in all, Ian's innocent power was frightening and funny at the same time. It was amusing because Ian still had the heart of a child. He was a loving pup who only meant to play and have fun. It was also alarming because whenever he punched, he could do some serious damage, and his kick could break a wooden board.
They were in Gwen's apartment, and she had already packed when she spoke with Ian. That was the day that she and her brother, plus Jacob, would depart to Northern Alfar.
After Gwen said goodbye to her parents and, again, to Ian, she left with Jacob and Baron. A royal car waited for them at her apartment building driveway. In half an hour, they made it to the airport, and from there, they took a flight to the country that Gwen had fled more than six years ago.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now landing in Drad City, the capital of Northern Alfar," the pilot announced.
In each second the royal jet descended, Gwen's heart raced. Even if seeing Theo was a slim chance, she couldn't shake off the possibility. It made Gwen wonder how Theo had been doing all these years.
Had he lived a happy life? Did he finally marry the woman that he loved?
'Madison, that was the name,' Gwen thought. 'She is probably now the Luna of Port Leon.'
When their private plane landed on the paved runway, Gwen's thoughts drifted back to reality. She looked around and saw how King Alexander's royal guards prepared to disembark. They were fixing their clothes and eyeing the window outside. Gwen's companions, Baron and Jacob, did the same.
Luxury cars turned up at the runway to take them to the castle. It was a smooth transition, for they did not have to undergo boarding screening. Only Alexander's royal guards secured their identification and showed them to the local authorities at the airport.
Soon, they arrived at Dradhold Castle, the home of the werewolf king and queen of Northern Alfar. Gwen and her party were escorted to their rooms. They settled down before Gwen was finally taken to meet the king's quarters.
As they moved around Dradhold Castle, Jacob, and Baron followed behind Gwen and two other escorts from King Alexander. King Arthur's Beta showed them the way.
Gwen had two huge bags that Baron and Jacob carried with them. It contained supplements and her miracle cure.
"My name is Ivor. I am King Arthur's beta. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miracle Doctor Weneth. We have heard so much about you. So, when King Alexander offered your service, My King could not refuse," The beta said.
It no longer surprised Gwen. She had had patients from other countries, especially that year, but still, it was overwhelming to hear. She smiled and replied, "Thank you. I'm still new in the practice, but I am very dedicated to my patient's treatments. Perhaps that made the difference."
They were on the upper levels of the highly secured castle. Beta Ivor pointed to a substantial double door and said, "The king's room."
The beta clearly mindlinked with the king to gain approval before opening the door and giving Gwen, Jacob, and Baron entry.
When Gwen walked in, she gasped at the sight of the weak King Arthur. Instead of a splendid bed, he was lying in a hospital bed, which allowed him to recline. He had grown a beard, and his eyelids partly covered his brown eyes.
Gwen knew King Arthur was older than King Alexander, but the king before her looked like he had aged drastically, perhaps because of his illness.
"You - you are the doctor Alexander sent?" Arthur faintly inquired.
Gwen bowed before the king. Jacob and Baron did the same. Gwen approached the bed and introduced herself, "My name is Doctor Weneth, and I am here to cure you."
She offered her hand and asked, "May I feel your pulse, Your Highness."
The king offered his hand, and Gwen felt his pulse. When she recognized it was weak, she said, "Let's start by discussing your illness, Your Highness. Shall we talk about it over tea? I brought my pack's specially made herbal teas, such as peppermint, hibiscus, and the all-time favorite green tea."
"I love peppermint," the king revealed.
Gwen smiled at Arthur before turning to Jacob. She introduced, "Your Highness, this is Jacob. He is my assistant slash bodyguard. He will prepare your tea."
She pointed to her brother and said, "And next to Jacob is my brother, Baron. He is highly overprotective of me, so he came along."
King Arthur chuckled. He remarked, "What a nice brother."
Gwen turned to the king and commented, "Your brother also cares for you, King Arthur. He expressed so much concern for your health that I knew I had to come here and help you."
"Did he now?" King Arthur said with a sad expression. "Well, I am thankful for any chance to get better."
Minutes later, they were having tea. Ivor, the king's beta, and a nurse, remained to assist however they could.
Gwen observed as the king sipped his tea. She said, "Careful, Your Highness. It's still hot."
"This tea is great," the king said. "It's still peppermint, but it has a distinct taste."
"I used monkfruit sweetener for your case. That's probably what made the difference," Gwen suggested. "Shall we start, King Arthur?"
"Yes," Arthur answered before taking another sip of his tea.
"When did you start feeling ill? And what tests have been done?" Gwen asked.
"A year ago. It started with fatigue, and the doctors couldn't explain it," the king answered.
It was a long discussion. The nurse and the beta filled in on it, too. Gwen had also studied the king's medical records. So many tests were done, but nothing conclusive came up. Yet, here was the king falling ill day by day. It was indeed strange!
'Well,' Gwen thought confidently. 'It did not matter. I can still cure him.'
