The night before.
"I have asked Hazel, my queen, to consider remarrying. In that way, another strong alpha can take over my crown," King Arthur said. "But she isn't interested. So, I called upon you to ask for your support - to reinforce Hazel if I die. She will instead become Northern Alfar's alpha queen, and Ivor will continue to help Hazel as the beta."
"But this is only if I die," the king added.
Theo was relieved that Arthur was not looking for someone to replace him. Sure, if it came down to helping the country, he would give it his all, but protecting Port Leon was enough responsibility for him. He had more problems than the capital or any other packs, for that matter. Theo's pack remained the center of envy and invasions in the last few years.
"You look so much better, My King," Theo commented. "Please be optimistic about your health."
"He does look better, doesn't he?" Ivor remarked from his seat. He smiled as he declared, "It's all thanks to the miracle doctor of Southern Alfar."
"I have heard about this miracle doctor. My aunt, a Luna in Borealis, went to Southern Alfar to receive treatment from this same doctor," Alpha Talon of Moonshadow Pack shared. "She got infected by this mutated virus."
"It's strange how many werewolf viruses have surfaced over the years, and not only that, but other nations have discovered new poisons that affect werewolves," Ivor noted. "I'm just glad the miracle doctor is a werewolf and is on our side."
"You mean the side of Southern Alfar?" Theo raised.
"My brother -" Arthur hesitated, but he eventually revealed, "Alexander lent the famous doctor, and I have been receiving treatment for a few days now."
There was a brief silence in the room before Theo commented, "Then, we are thankful to your brother, My King."
"Yes, indeed. I am thankful and hopeful for my health," Arthur revealed.
"We are glad you are getting treatment from the miracle doctor, Your Highness. Maybe you can fight your illness," Alpha Kael of Ravenclaw Pack said.
"Ha. Ha." On the other hand, Alpha Thorn of Red Mountain Pack admitted his desire, "I thought I would finally become King."
Six alphas were invited to that gathering, and all of them, including Theo, looked at Alpha Thorn in disbelief.
"I was just being honest," Alpha Thorn confessed. "But, of course, I would want to obtain the crown in the most honorable manner."
"If I'm also completely honest, Alpha Theo is the best candidate to be king," Arthur declared. "But there are complications on this side."
Of course, Theo did not brag about his infertility. However, he admitted it to his pack, his allied alphas, and the king.
"Well, whatever that is, I'm glad Theo is complicated," Alpha Thorn noted with a smirk on his face.
Alpha Thorn was one of the arrogant alphas, but he was genuinely patriotic, which is why he was part of the council of alphas.
"In any case, My King, we will support whatever your decision is," Alpha Theo said, and the rest echoed the same, except for Thorn. Still, we pray for your full recovery."
Other matters were also covered during that dinner, including security. Each alpha was assigned a designated border to watch over, and they all reported all invasion attempts and measures taken.
At ten in the evening, they all called it a night.
Before the sun could rise, Theo was already up. He was used to his daily routine: running at dawn and having a fighting match with his warriors.
Since Brody was watching over Port Leon, Theo's gammas, Dunken, and Rollin escorted him on the trip. They all changed into their training clothes before jogging around Drad City.
After an hour, they were returning to Dradhold Castle when Theo suddenly caught a whiff of lilac—and goddess; it was potent!
Theo found himself sniffing on the sidewalk, which surprised his gammas.
"Everything okay, Alpha?" Dunken asked.
Theo was restless as he took a full turn. He said, "I smell, I smell -"
"What the - since when did you learn to play tricks, Gwen?" Theo heard a man's voice calling Gwen's name. He turned across the street and saw his fated mate having a romantic moment with another man!
Theo gasped.
He felt a burning sensation rise from his stomach to his throat. It was as if someone had lit a fire within him. He clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palms. Each affectionate gesture between Gwen and the stranger fueled the flames of his anger.
Moreover, Gwen's eyes sparkled in a way he had never seen before, and envy crept into his heart. Also, Theo thought the man Gwen was with looked familiar, like they had met in the past.
Immediately, his wolf attempted to come out! Theo's body expanded, and he growled, "Gwen?"
When Theo caught Gwen's attention, he clearly saw her delicate face.
Even with a different eye-color, it was undeniable.
It was Gweneth, his wife and fated mate.
Theo barked, "Gwen! It is you! So, you have been in Drad all along? You made us all think you did not survive the rogue attack! And here you are, flirting with that man! Wasn't Doctor Hanson enough?"
Another growl left Theo's lips as he asked, "Who is he?"
A few cars were already on the road, but that did not stop Theo from crossing the street. Two vehicles had to make an abrupt halt because they feared hitting Theo.
At the same time, Gwen and the big guy were running away from him!
"Gwen!" Theo angrily called. He sprinted as fast as he could. Gwen and her lover may have tried to evade him, but they were no match for his speed.
Gwen and the familiar stranger were approaching a waiting shed, and Theo saw an opportunity. He shifted into his wolf form and leaped above the shed. He then returned to his human body, rolling on the roof and landing on the pavement before them.
A loud growl left Theo's lips. He asked, "Who is he, Gwen? Who is he?"
"You! We have met before, and I'm sure of it!" he barked at the wolf standing next to Gwen.
"I don't know what you are talking about. Leave us alone!" Gwen's companion yapped.
At that point, Theo's blood was boiling. He charged at the muscular man, and a fight ensued. His gammas also caught up with them, circling around Theo and the unknown werewolf.
Theo was impressed by the stranger's fighting skills. The warrior could block a few of his attacks, but nonetheless, the fellow was no match to him. Theo eventually found an opening and punched him in the gut! He followed the attack with a kick. He was about ready to claw him when Gwen screamed, "Stop! Stop this!"
Gwen intercepted and covered her companion. She looked Theo in the eye and said, "Why does it matter who he is? And why are you angry? Wasn't it better that I did not return? At least that saved you the trouble of dealing with me!"
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she said, "Leave us alone!"
Gwen's defense of the stranger made Theo realize his importance to her. Jealousy consumed him as he demanded, "Who the hell is he to you, Gwen? And weren't you pregnant at that time? Does this man know that you've been with other men—"
"He is the father of my child!" Gwen screamed. "He is my lover!"
Theo gasped. He froze for a second as his heart ached. All the while, he was harboring feelings of regret for Gwen when, in fact, she was living a happy life with the man who had fathered her child.
He felt like a fool, a big fool!
Because of the shock, Theo wasn't able to react. Pain overwhelmed him more than outrage.
While Theo was in that state, another werewolf in human form suddenly emerged and bumped into his gammas! This guy was tall, well-built, and had blond hair. He suddenly threw Rollin off balance before crashing into Dunken.
"Oops! Sorry, Man! I did not see you both there!" the blond man said before he tried to talk to Theo. "Are these your warriors? Sorry. I was jogging and checking my phone. I did not notice them -"
"Get out of my way!" Theo screamed, and only then did the blond man run away.
The distraction allowed Gwen and her lover to flee. When Theo returned his attention to her, she had already dashed across the street with the father of her child. A bus suddenly drove through the road, blocking his view of Gwen, and before he knew it, they were gone.
Theo was about to run after Gwen when Rollin said, "Let's forget her, Alpha! She doesn't deserve you! Even if she was the one who helped us during our captive days, she still betrayed you!"
