~ Gwen ~
“Goodbye, Your Highnesses,” Gwen said while bowing before the royal couple of Northern Alfar.
The day had finally come for Gwen to leave Drad City. They were at the castle’s driveway, saying their goodbyes. Gwen said, “I certainly hope that you will be able to visit me in the south. Again, I am really sorry to ask this of you, but it’s better for us to resume your treatment there, where I can also have convenient access to my other patients..”
“But if you can’t-” She turned to her brother and reluctantly glanced back at King Arthur and Queen Hazel, saying, “We will figure out a way to return as soon as possible. I will work something out with my patients.”
“I understand, Doctor Weneth,” the king said. “I know it’s been hard for you to monitor your other patients while in my nation.”
“Yes, I can also imagine,” Hazel echoed. “Doing online consultations with your other patients is certainly not enough. We will see, Doctor, but we prefer you come to see us instead.”
Gwen nodded and smiled.
When the car pulled over at the castle’s driveway, Gwen said, “This is our ride. Please take care, Your Highnesses.”
“King Arthur, don’t forget to take your supplements daily. Eat healthy and exercise. Have evening and morning walks,” Gwen reminded.
“I will definitely do that,” the king said with a smile.
“I will push him,” Hazel claimed. “Thank you so much, Doctor. Have a safe journey.”
“Goodbye, Your Highnesses,” Jacob bowed before opening the car door for Gwen.
Baron also said the same, “We also thank you for the wonderful accommodation. We pray to the Moon Goddess that you continue to heal.”
“Thank you, Baron and Jacob. Goodbye,” the king said before thanking Alexander’s royal guards who came with Gwen’s party.
Gwen had explained to the royal couple that while the king’s condition improved, he still needed follow-through checkups and treatment with her. However, fearing another encounter with Theo, she expressed her wish to continue Arthur’s treatment in Southern Alfar. Gwen hoped for the best, though she knew the chances were slim, as the issues between King Alexander and King Arthur remained unresolved.
Baron, Jacob, and Gwen purposely rode in a separate vehicle from King Alexander’s guards. When they were on the road, Baron expressed behind the wheels, “We can’t fucking come back.”
“Yeah, Gwen.” Jacob hissed, “What if we see your ex-husband again?”
Shaking her head, Gwen admitted, “I don’t know what to do either, but the king also needs his treatment, or his illness will progress again.”
Days came and went. Being back in Southern Alfar, Gwen committed to spending time with her son.
“Hiya! Hiya!” Gwen screamed with her son as they both executed their fighting techniques. They were training with other students and their parents in Ian’s fighting school.
Gwen and Ian punched and kicked simultaneously, and after completing the last round of practice, she offered a high-five, “Good job, Honey!”
“Thanks, Mom. You did great too!” Ian proudly said. His cute face looked adorable as he smiled. He turned to his classmates and suggested, “Isn’t my mom great at fighting too?”
“Yeah, she is!”
“Hi, Ian’s mom!”
“It’s nice to meet you!”
Some of Ian’s classmates greeted Gwen, but one particular remark made her son frown. An older boy said, “Dads should train their kids, not moms! Where is your dad, Ian?”
Gwen saw her son’s hesitation, but he soon claimed, “My Dad is working! He is a strong warrior too!”
“I thought you did not have a dad?” A young girl asked.
“I do!” Ian retorted. “He is just working!”
Ian walked away from his classmates, looking irritated, and Gwen chased after her son. “Ian! Ian!”
They were already in the locker room when Gwen caught up with her son. She said, “Honey, why did you say that?”
“Why, Mom? Don’t I have a dad?” Ian asked while stomping his feet and crossing his arms against his chest.
“Well, technically, you do,” Gwen softly said.
“Is my dad a warrior?” Ian turned to her and asked.
Gwen bit her lip but eventually replied, “He is.”
“Then, my answer is correct,” Ian said.
Barely a whisper, Gwen replied, “I suppose.”
Yet again, the idea of introducing Ian to his father battled within Gwen, but she did not have time to dwell on it at the moment. She still had patients to see that afternoon.
After she and her son bathed and changed, they walked out of the building where Jacob waited for them. Gwen brought Jacob to the apartment where her mother, Juliet, was present to care for her son.
“Mom, thanks for coming over again and watching Ian,” Gwen said before kissing Juliet on the cheek.
“Of course! I love my grandson!” Juliet said before reciprocating Gwen’s affection. “Good luck with the checkups! And take care.”
Ian was on the sofa, reading a comic. Gwen leveled with her son and said, “Hey, I love you.”
Her son wavered, but soon he looked up and responded, “I love you too, Mommy. I’m sorry about earlier.”
Gwen embraced Ian, and she nearly cried. Deep inside, she knew her son’s desire to have a father would further grow, and she had to do something. She wondered, ‘Maybe, I should get married. That way, Ian would have a father. I’ll have to think about that.’
“Mommy is going to be back at around eight, okay? I’m going to put you to sleep tonight,” Gwen said to Ian.
Her son smiled as he nodded. He said, “Okay, Mommy. Take care. Bye.”
Jacob escorted her out of her apartment and to the hospital as usual. When Gwen arrived at her clinic, she began to entertain patients. The last patient entered around six in the evening.
It was a man looking mysterious. He was wearing a long-sleeve top and pants. He also had a cap over his head and sunglasses.
“How can I help you, Mr. Rider?” Gwen asked.
The man was about to sit on the chair before Gwen’s table when he said, “I am sick, Doctor.”
Gwen smiled and answered, “I can help you with - Ahh!”
Unexpectedly, the man reached for Gwen’s coat. He pulled her closer to him, thrusting his forehead against Gwen’s.
Gwen ended up falling on the floor from the sudden attack. Her head hurt like hell!
The strange man abruptly leaped over her table. He was about to kick Gwen when Jacob lunged at him. A fight began within Gwen’s office, with Jacob and the stranger going at it, fist to fist.
Gwen felt dizzy after the attack, but she stood up, knowing she had to help Jacob. Outside her office, her assistant and other hospital workers panicked, each asking for help.
“Security! Security!”
“Doctor Weneth, come over here!”
“Somebody help!”
Gwen wanted to use her moonstone blade, but with the people around her, she could only rely on the physical skills her brother taught her.
After the attacker kicked Jacob, she found an opening. Immediately, she gave the man a mighty sidekick, shocking him. “Hiya!”
Just in time, Jacob recovered from having fallen. He jumped and landed his feet on the man’s torso, and Jacob was in control from then on. On the floor, he sat on the opponent’s frame and punched him in the face nonstop.
“You fucking asshole!” Jacob barked after another punch.
Soon, help arrived. Two security guards came to aid Jacob. At that point, the assailant looked half-conscious. He probably thought he had reached his limit or was scared of being imprisoned, so the moment a security guard grabbed the attacker, the latter shook his arm vigorously. He searched inside his trouser pocket and swallowed a pill.
The attacker stared at Gwen. He was panting as he warned, “Do not return to the north if you want to live. Do not help the northern king.”
Before Gwen could react, the stranger’s face suddenly contorted in agony. His mouth twitched uncontrollably, and thick, frothy foam bubbled at the corners of his lips.
“What the—” Jacob could not finish his words because the man dropped to the floor in a split second, lifeless.
“Oh, my goddess!” Gwen’s skin crawled. The fact that someone attempted to hurt or, maybe, even kill her terrified her!
This man delivered a warning not to aid King Arthur, then took his own life! The gravity of the situation hit her hard. She swallowed nervously and murmured, “Who on earth sent him? Why would anyone do this?"
