Gwen got up, still feeling lightheaded. She looked around and realized she was in Dr. Marcus Hanson's clinic. She turned to the wall clock and was shocked to see it was already four in the afternoon.
"Oh, no. I have to go to the wake," Gwen muttered. She removed the blanket covering her frame, but Dr. Hanson entered the clinic before she could get up.
"Luna Gwen? No!" The doctor urged her back to bed and said, "You need to rest for a bit more."
"But, I have to attend today's wake. Elder Agatha will be buried tomorrow," Gwen muttered.
"But, you just fainted," the doctor reasoned with her. "Please, sit down. There is something that I need to tell you."
Gwen sat up, studied herself, and realized she had a bandage on her arm. She asked, "Did you run a test on me?"
"Yes," the doctor answered. "Luna Gwen. You are pregnant."
Doctor Hanson gave her the laboratory results and repeated, "I had the lab run it twice. You are three weeks pregnant."
A gasp left Gwen's lips. She grabbed the test result and read it again and again.
'Pregnant.'
'Pregnant.'
The results played in her head like a broken record.
Her skin crawled in delight, and she put the result against her chest, saying, "Moon Goddess, thank you! Thank you!"
"This is great news, Doctor Hanson," Gwen said with gleaming eyes. "I will have an heir for Theo."
More than an heir, Gwen felt relieved that she wouldn't be kicked out of the pack or, worse, killed for the sins of her father. Agatha's premonition had finally started to come true!
She shed tears of joy and carelessly wiped them. Then she said, "I need to tell Theo. This is going to change everything -"
"You can't," the doctor said outright with a worried expression.
Gwen frowned at Doctor Hanson's reaction. She asked, "Why?"
"I—" Doctor Hanson looked down, conflicted. Then he sighed and asked, "Is the baby really Alpha Theo's?"
"What are you saying, Doctor Hanson?" Gwen was shocked. She angrily responded, "I know no one wanted me here, but I at least expected a little ounce of trust from you, considering you know me well."
Doctor Hanson was Gwen's mentor at the hospital. He was a werewolf in his early thirties but looked younger than his age. Among the medical staff, he knew her better.
"I'm sorry, it's just that -" the doctor did not get to finish his words because Gwen hurriedly fixed her clothes and got up.
"I need to go," Gwen said angrily. She rushed out the door with Doctor Hanson chasing her.
"Luna Gwen!" He called, but no matter how many times he asked her to return to the clinic, she ignored him.
Heartbeats later, Gwen was at Elder Agatha's wake, sitting at the frontmost row alone. As always, the place was surrounded by people who disliked her. Gwen hoped to find Theo there since they did not meet at the packhouse.
'Theo, where are you? I need to speak with you.' Gwen tried to mindlink her husband, but he did not answer. She only realized that Theo had arrived because she sensed his domineering aura and scent.
Theo carried the scent of sun-bleached driftwood, a fragrance that was always refreshing and distinctly masculine to Gwen. She turned her head toward the memorial hall's entrance with a smile, but her excitement faded when she saw Madison arriving with Theo.
Everyone greeted them like they were the king and queen of the pack. They did not care that Gwen was there, still their luna.
Even with the apparent disrespect, Gwen gathered her courage to approach Theo. She needed to tell him about the pregnancy. She said, "Theo, I need to talk to you -"
"Gwen, Theo tells me you are getting a divorce," Madison said with a big smile, and immediately, Gwen's heart sank.
Madison leaned to Theo's shoulder and expressed, "Thank you for finally considering us, Gwen. When you and Theo got married, I'm sure you saw me cry my heart out before leaving the town."
"It was very painful for me to leave the love of my life." Madison held Theo's hand and declared, "But now that I'm back and Agatha is gone, we can finally be together. As it should be."
Gwen looked at Theo with hurt reflecting in her eyes. She thought, 'Wow, he had already told Madison about the divorce. He was that excited to reject me.'
What can she do? Madison's account of her union with Theo was true. She came between Madison and Theo.
'But what about my pregnancy?' Gwen asked herself.
Before Gwen could raise her concern, Theo said, "Whatever it is, Gwen, it can wait. And don't wait up for me. Madison and I will celebrate her return at the Westside Hotel with the other warriors."
Feeling defeated, Gwen returned to the packhouse alone. Although Theo had instructed her not to wait for him, she did anyway.
Gwen was in the living room, hugging herself in the dark when suddenly voices echoed in her head. The warriors were mindlinking to her!
'Looks like Madison and Alpha Theo are going to have their first night!'
'Alpha Theo is really in love with Madison.'
'Do you hear that Gwen? Theo and Madison are heading up to Madison's hotel room to fuck! Haha!' The voice came from Theo's sister, Caroline. 'For the first time, my brother is going to enjoy having sex, not like every night he spent with you! Haha!'
'Hahaha!'
'Hahaha!'
Gwen could identify other familiar voices in the group. They were primarily female gamma warriors who were friends with Caroline and Madison.
They continued to mindlink with her, letting her hear their mocking laughs. When she had had enough, Gwen blocked the mindlink, disallowing any communication to enter her mind. She covered her ears and screamed as tears trickled down her face.
The thought of Theo being with another woman crushed her hopes. Even if she revealed the pregnancy to Theo, she realized she would still be the third party in his eyes.
Gwen ran up to her room and covered herself with a blanket. She cried silently to the skies, 'Moon Goddess, please tell me what to do! Please!'
She did not know for how long she wept, but she felt like it was forever. Gwen was too drowned in sorrow that her senses had failed to notice an overpowering presence coming her way.
Gwen suddenly heard the loud banging on the door as she lay in bed. She jerked up, and the door swung open with force! She was stunned to see Theo fully naked and appeared intoxicated.
"Theo?" Gwen called. 'Wasn't he with Madison?'
Theo did not respond. Instead, he closed the door, locked it, and climbed up the bed. His eyes looked dangerous, with a hint of lust.
Gwen's heart raced as Theo closed the gap between them. Unexpectedly, he crashed his lips to hers, and sparks flew.
Whenever Theo touched her, Gwen always felt strange tingles all over her body.
"Theo? What's going on with you?" Gwen called again, but Theo did not listen. Instead, he littered kisses down her neck, and his hands carelessly tore her sleeping dress. "Theo? What are you -"
"Shhh." Theo's eyes were filled with implicit desire as he stared at her. He said, "I need you tonight. You are still my wife, so let me have you."
With that, Gwen gave in.
Theo was all over her, touching her and kissing every part of her. He had so much stamina that night, and he claimed her four times!
She couldn't understand him, but Gwen was also drowned in pleasure, and she did not question his actions. She let her emotions take over and hoped their intimate moments were meaningful to Theo.
When morning came, Gwen awoke with a smile on her face. She wondered if Theo's actions meant he had changed his mind and decided to cancel their divorce.
Gwen was resting on Theo's chest when he abruptly got up. He growled as he massaged his temples. "Fuck."
"Theo, are you okay?" Gwen asked.
"Fuck!" Theo cussed again.
"What's wrong, Theo?" Gwen asked.
Theo hurriedly got up, his face looking strained. He stared at her with his intense green-colored eyes and said through gritted teeth, "Last night was a mistake! It should never have happened."
Just as Gwen began to hope, Theo swiftly dashed her expectations. Her heart was broken again, and she did not know how long she could last.
