‘Damn, Theo, he looks so much like you when you were a kid,’ Brody linked with him.
Theo took a deep breath as he once again gazed at the child, who looked like a younger version of himself. He had lost count of the times he had rubbed his jaw and tried to speak, but no words came out.
His wolf was screaming mine, mine, mine, all over again, yet Theo could not fathom how this child could possibly be his pup. After all, he was infertile!
Out of the corner of Theo’s eye, he saw Alpha Vander giving him that look, the look that speculated his relationship with the child.
At the Silver Creek Pack’s packhouse, Alpha Vander’s wife carefully examined the child. During the assessment, the young boy would occasionally meet Theo’s gaze, their eyes reflecting the exact same vivid shade of green.
“He is fine. The scratches he had earlier have now healed,” Alpha Vander’s wife said. “But I suggest taking him to the hospital.”
“Alpha,” Dunken, Theo’s gamma, called.
Theo excused himself and walked into a private corner of the living room. From there, Brody joined in the discussion. They kept their voices down as Dunken showed the documents found within the rogue’s camp.
“These passports suggest that one of the rogues was the child’s father,” Dunken revealed.
Theo gulped. His heart raced, feeling regretful. They had spared no mercy, leaving all the rogues dead, but one of them was the boy’s father?
Taking one passport, Theo approached the pup. He asked, “Is he your father?”
“No!” The child answered outright. He looked back at Theo, and hurt flashed in his eyes. He asked, “Aren’t you my Dad?”
Theo stilled at the boy’s response. He wanted to say yes, but recalling how it was impossible, he answered, “I - can’t be your father. I’m -”
Tears brimmed in the boy’s eyes. He said, “I - thought you were my Dad.”
“Do you not know your father?” Theo inquired.
The pup looked down and said, “No, I never met my Dad, but it can’t be him!” The boy pointed to the passport and said, “I was kidnapped from school!”
Tears began to fall down his cheeks as he expressed, “I miss my Mommy, my uncles, and my grandparents! I wanna go home!”
The boy looked broken. His shoulders sagged under the weight of his grief, and his face bore the heavy toll of the emotional turmoil he had tolerated.
Hearing the boy’s cries crushed Theo’s heart. He couldn’t explain how the pup connected to him like he was indeed his.
Theo leveled with the pup and wrapped him in his arms like earlier. He promised, “I’ll find your Mommy, I promise.”
It took the boy a while to settle his emotions, and when he did, Theo asked again, “What is your name, child? Your passport said your name is Brian. Is that your name?”
This was the second time he tried to get the boy’s name. Back at the rogue’s makeshift camp, the pup looked so shaken that he wasn’t able to give his name.
“No.” The pup sniffed and answered, “Ian - My name is Ian Allard.”
“Nice to meet you, Ian,” Theo said. He smiled, gave his hand, and reintroduced himself, “My name is Alpha Theo Erhart.”
Theo looked behind him and introduced his men, “These are my warriors.”
He also introduced Ian to Alpha Vander and his wife. He explained, “You are in Silver Creek Pack, but I will take you to my territory to get checked by a professional doctor, okay? I will ask you questions so we can easily find your Mommy.”
The boy nodded, and Theo began, “What’s your mother’s name?”
“Weneth,” Ian faintly answered. “My Mommy’s name is Weneth.”
“Which pack do you belong to?” Theo asked.
“The Lilac Pack?” When the boy gave the name of the flower, Theo stilled. He could not help but think of when at the mention of Lilac.
“Lilac Pack,” Theo repeated. “I don’t believe I have heard of this pack before.”
Brody helped him review the passports, and then they confirmed that Ian had flown in from another country. His beta said, “Based on the stamp, they had recently flown into Stormreach from Southern Alfar.”
“Are you from Southern Alfar?” Theo asked, and the pup quickly nodded.
“Why?” The pup asked. “Where am I? Where is the Silver Creek Pack?”
Theo cleared his throat and answered, “You are in Northern Alfar. You have been taken far away from home, and I’m sorry for that. Don’t worry. As soon as I take you home, I will use all my resources to find your mother.”
Half an hour later, Theo was on the road back to Port Leon. He wasted no time and went straight to the hospital, where doctors received Ian for an evaluation. He did not go home and stayed with the pup like he was his own.
The next morning.
The sun hit Theo’s face, and he winced. He was about to get up but realized Ian was holding on to him for dear life!
He turned to his left and found Ian clutching his shirt, his head resting on his arm. Once again, Theo felt it - that familial bond.
Mine! Mine! His wolf was screaming it again, like his blood was indeed flowing in this boy’s veins!
‘Am I going crazy?’ Theo wondered. ‘But I had my sperm tested, and they said I couldn’t get any woman pregnant.’
No matter how much he looked back, Theo knew there was no mistake in the tests. He was practically sterile because his sperm could not survive long enough to fertilize an egg. And the only woman he was ever intimate with was Gwen.
‘Gwen,’ Theo thought of his fated mate. He frowned and looked at the boy, wondering, ‘Could he be Gwen’s pup?’
‘But Gwen said that man from Drad City was her child’s father!’ Theo scolded himself. He was so mad that he considered Gwen to be Ian’s mother that he threw his head back to the pillow with his jaws tightening.
He remained in the same position for about ten minutes, but eventually, Ian’s sleep deepened, and Theo was able to free himself from the boy’s hold.
Theo stretched his arms, legs, and back as he got up, feeling the ache in his spine from having squeezed into the small hospital bed with the pup. Just then, the door to the private room swung open, and one of the doctors walked in.
“What do you want? I did not order you to attend to this boy,” Theo said through gritted teeth.
The doctor who entered was Doctor Marcus Hanson, the same one who Theo blamed for Gwen’s disappearance more than six years ago.
“Alpha Theo, do you still blame me? Haven’t I proven that I was forced to bring Gwen to the port that day, more than six years ago?” Doctor Hanson asked.
Theo hadn’t seen this doctor in over two years, having intentionally avoided him. The mere sight of Dr. Hanson made Theo want to tear his face off!
Yes, it was true; the doctor was proven innocent, but Theo found it impossible to hate him, especially since his pack members had previously suggested that he was in a relationship with Gwen.
“What do you want, Doctor?” Theo asked coldly.
“I still feel guilty for what happened to Gwen, so I did you a favor, hoping that you would eventually forgive me, Alpha,” the doctor suggested.
Theo frowned. He said, “What could you possibly do to -”
“I did a DNA test between you and the pup,” the doctor quickly revealed.
“How did you -” Theo stopped. He suddenly remembered that the lab technicians had taken his blood sample for comparison. Last night, the resident doctor wanted to get a possible match for Ian in case he had internal injuries and needed a blood transfusion.
“Yes, that’s right. We had your blood, and since Ian’s blood was evaluated, we also had enough samples to perform a DNA test. I personally supervised the test and expedited it. It came back positive,” the doctor reported while showing Theo the results. “The boy is yours, Alpha. He is your alpha heir.”
“And my math couldn’t be wrong. You were only intimate with one woman over six years ago,” Doctor Hanson added. “Thus resulting in a six-year-old pup.”
‘He is your alpha heir,’ the words rang in Theo’s head. He thought of Gwen, and his heart drummed against his ribcage.
