~ Theo ~
“Why are they taking my blood again?” Ian asked Theo while one of the nurses drew blood from his arm.
“They—are—going to make sure that you are strong and healthy,” Theo wavered in his reply because, truthfully, he had ordered a second test, one that his Gamma, Rollin, would supervise.
While his heart was saying Ian was his son, he could not also deny the studies that were done with his sperm. He wanted to be sure and could only do that if the paternity test was observed by someone he trusted. Moreover, he still doubted Doctor Hanson’s intentions.
“Breakfast is here!” Brody came in, carrying a takeout bag of bacon and pancakes for the boy.
Theo smiled at Ian, asking, “You said you love pancakes?”
Ian’s eyes lit up. He replied, “I love pancakes. Though, I love Mommy’s pancakes best, I love any pancakes.”
“Here you go, Ian,” Brody said with a wink, setting the food bag on his lap.
Raising his other hand, he said, “And this one is for me and the alpha!”
The nurse left, and the three ate their meal at the same time. Theo sat next to Ian while the pup ate before an overbed table. Brody enjoyed his breakfast on the sofa a few meters away.
In less than five minutes, Ian was almost finished with his meal. He declared, “I’m so hungry.”
Theo smiled. He ate another piece of his chicken fillets before he asked, “Was that pancake better than your Mom’s?”
“Mom’s is better. She cooks really well, but lately, she has been busy,” Ian shared.
Theo stilled for a second. He inquired, “What does your Mom do for a living?”
Ian opened his mouth but closed it back again. He replied, “I’m not supposed to talk much about Mom’s job.”
“Why?” Theo asked, but Ian remained silent.
The boy, instead, glanced at Brody, and complimented, “He has cool hair.”
Theo chuckled as he turned to Brody. He described, “He does have a cool hair.”
Among Theo’s warriors, one stood out, and that was Brody. In addition to being his beta, Brody had striking reddish-ginger hair. He also bore a long scar across his face, a mark left by Lucius Darwin.
‘Lucius,’ Theo mentioned Gwen’s father. He suddenly remembered all the investigation he had done about Lucius, but he found nothing to explain why he had maltreated Gwen when she was supposed to be his child.
Six years ago, the only thing Theo uncovered was that Lucius had brought Gwen to his pack as a baby, introducing her as his daughter from one of his numerous affairs.
Theo cleared his throat. Trying to forget Lucius Darwin, he asked Ian, “I noticed you weren’t scared when the nurse took your blood. You are a brave boy.”
“I’m used to seeing blood,” Ian responded.
The answer made Theo frown. He probed, “Why is that?”
“Mommy and grandma take care of people,” Ian answered cautiously.
“Are they doctors?” Theo asked with a brow raised.
Ian just smiled. He then proceeded to drink his water.
Theo understood that Ian did not want to answer this question. So, he changed the topic. “What do you like to do in your spare time, Ian?”
“My grandpa and uncle said that I have a special skill for fighting,” Ian proudly announced with a smile.
“Really?” Theo leaned back, also feeling proud of him. “I am very good at fighting. Maybe you can show me your moves one day, and I’ll show you mine.”
Ian’s eyes sparkled with excitement as he replied, “I’d love that!”
“Perfect!” Theo remarked. “So, when we are done here, the first thing that we will do is practice those arms and legs.”
The pup bounced in his place, saying, “I was born ready!”
“That’s my boy!” Theo offered his hand for a high five. Ian hesitated for a moment before breaking into a grin and eagerly slapping his palm against Theo’s.
‘My boy. Did I just say my boy?’ Theo mused. He could not believe it. He had already claimed it before the second DNA test results were even done.
For the rest of the day, Theo chose to get to know Ian better. He ignored all calls, especially from Madison, and let his beta deal with all the pack concerns. For the first time in a very long time, he took a break for himself, and that was because the boy before him was possibly his son.
So far, Ian has been very reluctant to discuss his family. Whenever Theo asked about their names and what they looked like, Ian would change their conversation. So, Theo did not get the full description of Ian’s mother either.
Ian, however, had given him and Brody his mother’s contact number in Southern Alfar. He said, “I memorized this number by heart. I hope you can reach my Mommy soon.”
Theo stared at the number he had saved on his phone. He looked at Ian’s green eyes and answered, “I’ll give her a call now.”
He dialed the number, and it rang.
~ Gwen ~
At Stormreach, Gwen was looking sadder than ever. They had been back to Northern Alfar for over twelve hours but still had no solid lead.
They were at a hotel, waiting for feedback from the Stormreach Alpha. Yesterday, Gwen’s party had driven around town, searching for clues. They had met individuals who had seen a group of unknown men passing through unpaved roads. Currently, the Stormreach Alpha was questioning them.
The Stormreach alpha came out from the small meeting room and met Gwen and her group. He said, “So, it looks like the unknown men were headed south, going to either the Silver Creek Pack or the Westwood lands. But, the Silver Creek Pack is more vegetated. I would assume they were headed there, where they could be well hidden.”
“Silver Creek Pack,” Gwen muttered. She turned to her brother and said, “We should leave now.”
“Don’t you want to rest for a while, Doctor? You look tired,” the Stormreach Alpha said.
“No.” Gwen wept, saying, “I can’t rest. I need to find my son.”
“I understand.” The Stormreach alpha nodded and offered, “I’ll have my warriors guide you there. I’ll try to reach out to the Silver Creek alpha. If I get any news, I will call you as soon as possible.”
“Thank you for your help,” Gwen said before she, Baron, and Jacob left with their group for another town.
They quickly got in the car, and while on the road, Gwen noticed her phone buzzing.
“Your phone is ringing,” Jacob said, calling Gwen’s attention.
“It’s the hospital. They have been calling me since this morning. I just can’t right now,” Gwen answered in the backseat.
Baron, who was in the front seat with Jacob, remarked, “It could be news about Ian or Gwen.”
“Oh, Goddess!” Gwen frantically took her phone out of her trouser pocket and answered, “Hello.”
She frowned and repeated, “Hello? Who is this?”
Gwen looked at her phone, and her brows met.
