~ Gwen ~
“Hello? Who is this?” She said on the phone, but there was no answer. “Hello?”
Gwen looked at her mobile, and she frowned. A heavy sigh left her lips when her battery had died. “My phone is dead.”
She quickly charged it in the car as they remained on the road.
Heading to Silver Creek Pack, they would pass through two other packs, but from what Gwen had been told, these packs were well guarded. Kidnappers could not have wandered in packs that had many warriors. Still, they dropped by each pack border to give a photocopy of Ian’s picture.
In each warrior encounter, Gwen said, “My son has been kidnapped. This is a picture of him. My number, including my brother’s number, is at the back. If you hear anything or find my son, please call me.”
When they were passing through the Westwood lands, Gwen’s brother reported, “King Alexander’s warriors decided to check the area, so if they don’t see anything, they will proceed to the Silver Creek Pack.”
Gwen nodded. She shut her eyes, put her heart on her chest, and tried to feel Ian again. She said, “It’s strange, though; I don’t feel Ian’s fears.”
The remarkable thing about a werewolf’s parent-child bond was their ability to feel each other’s emotions, especially in moments of danger. Though it wasn’t always constant. Ever since Ian was taken, there were times when Gwen sensed his dread so intensely that it left her struggling to breathe. Most of the time, however, she could only sense Ian’s deep sadness.
Recently, Gwen did not feel Ian reaching out to her through their bond. Juliet told her that distance and Ian’s overall emotions were factors. So, she muttered, “I wonder if Ian is safe?”
~ Theo ~
“I like to run - I really love running!” Ian said to Theo. “Grandpa taught me to jump high places, and I love it too! One day, when I have my wolf, I want to climb and run through all the forest mountains in Southern Alfar!”
Because Theo could not reach Ian’s mother, he continued to get to know the pup, all while waiting for the DNA test to come out.
“You know, we have more mountains here in the north,” Theo revealed with a proud smirk.
“Really?” Ian’s eyes sparkled as he asked. “You can see it from outside the hospital.”
“I’d like to see!” Ian requested.
Well, Ian was not hooked on any medication. All his tests suggested that he was overall healthy, so he answered, “Let’s go!”
Theo was charmed by the child’s enthusiasm for nature, reminding him of his younger days. As the sun began to set, Theo led Ian to the hospital’s back garden, where the pup caught sight of the mountains that separated Port Leon from the Blue Valley Pack.
“Wwwwoaaaahhhhhh!” Ian exclaimed.
A chuckle left Theo’s lips because Ian’s mouth rounded so big, and it remained that way for almost two seconds.
“I wanna run!” Ian said.
“What? Now?” Theo asked, looking at his hospital slippers. “You don’t have shoes.”
Ian took off his slippers and felt the grass. He laughed and turned to Theo, saying, “The grass feels great!”
The pup took off anyway, running around with a free spirit.
“Wow, the wind is so strong!” Ian remarked.
Theo grinned at the boy, admiring his pace. Later, he realized something. With a brow raised, he complimented, “Ian is fast.”
Thank goodness his beta brought him a change of clothes and shoes earlier. He was now in casual clothes and wearing his boots. So, Theo chased after Ian, and Goddess, he enjoyed it.
Ian surprisingly tested Theo’s stamina, to think he was only a six-year-old pup. When Ian finally had enough running time, he and Theo returned to their starting point and expressed delight.
“That was fun, chasing after a pup,” Theo commented. His thoughts drifted to his people, recalling countless moments of children darting around while their parents playfully chased them. It felt just like that to him. He sensed the joy that something as simple as a chase could bring.
Then, an idea crept into his head. He smirked and said, “Are you tired?”
“A little bit,” Ian revealed.
Crossing his arms against his chest, Theo suggested, “Well, what if I do the running for you?”
In an instant, Theo transformed into his midnight-black wolf, towering over Ian as he let out a mighty howl to the skies. Lowering his massive head to meet Ian’s gaze, he softly asked, “Would you like to ride on my back?”
At first, Ian stood frozen in place, awestruck by his wolf’s sight. Gradually, his small hands began to stroke Theo’s snout and run through his fur. Suddenly, tears welled in his eyes, and he wrapped his tiny arms around Theo in a heartfelt embrace.
“Ian?” Theo asked. “What’s wrong?”
Theo gently lowered his head to comfort Ian, sensing the boy’s deep sadness. In a soothing voice, he reassured him, “It’s okay, Ian. I’m here with you.”
Ian pulled away and carelessly wiped the tears from his face. He voiced, “I just - I just wish I had a dad, a dad like you.”
The words pierced through Theo’s heart. Not only did he feel the boy’s longing, but he felt responsible for it!
Theo had so many questions, but he did not want to delve into them until he had the second paternity test confirmed. Thus, he answered, “Think of me as your Dad, and I’ll think of you as my son.”
He lowered his frame again, encouraging Ian to get on his back. When he did, he ran in his black wolf, chasing the wind!
“Wohooo!” Ian screamed as he held onto Theo for dear life. “Haha!”
Of course, the two had an audience. Hospital staff and other patients witnessed their bond. From a distance, he could hear their cheers and remarks.
“Go, Alpha Theo!”
“I have never seen Alpha Theo looking so happy before.”
“The kid is having so much fun!”
“The pup looks like Alpha Theo.”
Theo did not know how long he had run in his wolf form. After going around the hospital’s back garden, he explored some areas further behind it to give Ian a feel of what Port Leon was like.
It was around seven in the evening when they finally returned to the hospital. Brody was ready to meet them at the back entrance, giving Theo a new change of clothes.
Ian was still grinning from ear to ear at the experience. He expressed, “I wish my Mommy had seen me!”
Theo was quickly reminded about contacting Ian’s mother. When his beta handed him his phone, he dialed Weneth’s number. It rang, but she never picked up.
“At least her phone rang,” Theo said to Ian. “I’ll send her a message. Hopefully, she will call me back.”
“The results are out,” Brody said, catching Theo’s attention. “You can go to Rollin to get it. He is at the lab, waiting for you.”
“What results?” Ian inquired, looking at Theo.
Theo’s heart galloped. He forced a smile and answered, “It’s nothing, Ian. Why don’t you go and have dinner with Brody? I’ll join you in a few minutes.”
“Okay, I am hungry,” Ian admitted. “Alpha Theo, please call my Mommy again. I’m really worried for her.”
“I will,” Theo said before urging Ian to follow his beta. “I’ll see you later.”
Theo felt as if the walk to the laboratory stretched on endlessly. Anxiety gripped him, and he found himself taking deep, heavy breaths. He murmured, “Goddess, what will it be?”
Upon reaching the lab, Rollin handed him the results. Theo’s hand quivered as he took the envelope. His anticipation was evident. With deliberate care, he unfolded the document and read the words, “The probability of paternity is 99.99999%—oh, my—”
Theo gulped. The first thing that came into his head was, “Gwen.”
