~ Gwen ~
“Ian!” Gwen screamed as she jerked awake in an unfamiliar room. She looked around, frantic. “Where am I? Where am I?”
The door to her room swung open, and her brother, Baron, entered. He called, “Gwen.”
Jacob followed in, and just like Baron, he was panting, clearly panicking after Gwen’s scream.
“Baron.” Gwen’s eyebrows were drawn upward, creasing her forehead in deep worry lines. She said, “I just had a terrible dream - that Theo has Ian.”
Baron and Jacob looked at each other. Baron had to close the door before he revealed, “It wasn’t a dream, Gwen. That’s why we are in Silver Creek Pack. We had to let you rest before heading to Port Leon.”
He sat on the bed beside her and said, “Theo has Ian.”
“No, no, no!” Gwen cried as she covered her face. “We have to get him. Oh, Goddess, Theo was not supposed to know about Ian - if his people knew, they would surely hate him.”
“Shhh. Relax,” Baron said as Gwen stepped out of the bed.
Gwen’s hair was disheveled, and her clothes were wrinkled, but she didn’t bother to change. All she wanted was to get Ian as soon as possible.
“Gwen. Gwen!” This time, Jacob stopped her from exiting the room. He pointed out, “If we are going there, I think you should look your best.”
“But I’m worried for Ian,” Gwen reasoned.
“As much as I hate Theo for what he did to you, Gwen, is Theo the kind of alpha who would let anyone hurt a child?” Baron asked, and when Gwen did not answer, he urged, “Take a bath. You are still in your old clothes. The Silver Creek Alpha and Luna are waiting for us at the breakfast table.”
“They had made contact with Theo, and some of his warriors are on their way here to bring us to Port Leon,” Baron said.
“Why can’t he just bring my son to me?” Gwen asked through gritted teeth.
“I don’t know,” Baron said.
“Maybe he figured out that Ian is his child,” Jacob suggested.
“That’s impossible.” Gwen shook her head as she remarked, “Remember, he was supposed to be infertile? He never believed me then, and I don’t see what would change now!”
“Still, if we’re going, you need to look your best, Gwen,” Baron advised. He motioned from her head to her feet, adding, “You’re a mess. At least Jacob and I got to bathe. When was the last time you had a nice, warm shower? Back in Cada, right?”
Letting out a sigh, Gwen mumbled, “Fine.”
During breakfast, Gwen thought the Silver Creek alpha and luna’s treatment were a bit over the top. Not only did they prepare a lavish breakfast for Gwen and her party, they were too accommodating.
“Did you all get a good sleep?” Alpha Vander asked.
“Yes,” Baron replied, and Jacob echoed his agreement. Alexander’s royal guards also confirmed the same. They couldn’t say more because their mouths were full of food.
On the other hand, Gwen hesitated but soon answered, “Well, I wasn’t planning on sleeping, but I guess my body gave in.”
“Even if our body is strong, our emotions can weaken us,” the luna of the house remarked. “Regardless, it was good that you got to rest.”
“Do you like the food?” Vander additionally inquired. “My wife specially made them for you.”
“Yes, it’s very kind of you,” Gwen said, bowing to the luna. “Thank you very much.”
“It’s no problem at all! Alpha Theo said to give you the warmest welcome, and we are happy to do so,” Vander’s wife replied. “You’d be happy to know that Alpha Theo had Ian checked at the hospital, and he is entirely healthy.”
“Alpha Theo is a good man,” Vander complimented. “He has helped us protect our lands from rogue attacks and has always supported our business. He is probably one of our biggest clients, often buying various plants from us.”
In the next few minutes, they were praising Theo like he was some kind of god, and Gwen could not help but choke a few times.
Ashton, one of King Alexander’s royal guards, said, “He sounds like a great alpha. I have heard about him from the south. They said he is the strongest alpha in the north.”
“He is,” Vander acknowledged. “My wife and I only had become Luna and Alpha last year, but before our time, we had heard of Alpha Theo’s struggles - how his pack was conquered in the past, which made him push his people harder to become great warriors. He did the same to himself. Now, he is the strongest Alpha in Northern Alfar.”
The tale reminded Gwen of Theo’s suffering, which was part of why he despised her. After all, Port Leon never knew she was not Lucius’ daughter.
Another one of King Alexander’s guards commented, “Such an admirable man.”
While all this was happening, Gwen, Jacob, and Baron only ate their food. They smiled in acknowledgment of whatever praise they gave to Theo but never made a statement.
An hour later, they were finally leaving for Port Leon. Alpha Vander and his wife packed food for them as if having eaten a buffet breakfast was not enough.
“Oh, this is really a lot,” Gwen said.
“You’ll never know. You’ll get hungry along the way,” Vander’s wife answered with a smile.
Alexander’s guards, however, were happy to receive the food.
They were already at the packhouse’s driveway when another vehicle pulled over. Everyone glanced in the luxury SUV’s direction and saw a ginger-haired man stepping out of the driver’s side.
‘Damn.’ Gwen’s heart raced because she knew who this man was.
It was Brody Winston, Theo’s beta.
Two other warriors exited the SUV with him. Yet again, they were faces that Gwen already knew. They were Rollin and Dunken.
Surrendering to the inevitable, Gwen sucked in a deep breath. She mumbled, “Well, I guess this cannot be helped.”
Even with contact lenses, it is evident that she was Gweneth. Gwen had barely aged since she came of age.
‘It doesn’t matter,’ Baron, her brother, mindlinked with her and Jacob. ‘All we need to do is get Ian, and we will leave. Don’t worry, Gwen.’
‘I’m fucking nervous,’ Jacob linked back.
‘Why?’ Gwen asked.
‘Did you forget how you named me your lover, Gwen?’ Jacob growled while linking. ‘Theo will crucify me!’
‘No, he won’t. He doesn’t care,’ Gwen concluded.
‘What’s going on? Lover? Since when did Jacob become your lover, Gwen?’ Baron questioned.
Before Gwen could link back, Theo’s beta closed in. He bowed before her and greeted, “It’s good to see you again, Luna.”
Gwen’s mouth fell to the ground, and it remained that way for seconds.
~ Theo ~
Back in Port Leon, Theo was about to take his son for a ride on his wolf. They were already at the packhouse’s backyard, ready to explore the nearby nature.
Unexpectedly, Madison turned up, seething as she approached Theo.
“Theo, who is this?” She asked, referring to Ian. “And why have you been ignoring my links and my calls?”
Theo sighed. He supposed it was time to break Madison’s heart for good. He excused himself from Ian, saying, “I’ll be back, Ian.”
“Come on, Madison,” Theo said while leading the way.
He brought Madison to a secluded part of the garden where he was far enough from Ian. Then, he revealed, “I’m sorry, Madison, for all the things that I have done. I’m sorry for leading you on, and I hope you can forgive me one day.”
“I tried. You did see that I tried, right?” Theo said.
“What - what are you talking about?” Madison asked, clearly in a panic.
Theo swallowed air down his throat and said, “I -I can’t marry you. I can’t bring myself to love you.”
“Is it still because of Gwen?” Madison asked in horror, tears brimming in her eyes. “Wake up, Theo! She is dead. Gwen is dead!”
“She is not... dead,” Theo declared. “She is very much alive, so I know now the direction I must take... I can't be with you."
Madison’s eyes rounded. She reacted, “What?”
