“Here you go,” Dunken said while giving her the flowers meant for Agatha.
She smiled and answered, “Thank you, Dunken.”
Just as she had expected, the gamma did not leave her side. In fact, he drove her to a flower shop, bought the flowers, and drove her again to the cemetery.
Gwen was all covered up, wearing a jacket. She put a hood over her head and exited the car. To her surprise, Dunken still followed her. She frowned at him and said, “I’m not going anywhere, Dunken.”
Dunken made a face and answered, “Sorry, Alpha’s orders.”
Gwen shook her head. She slowly paced through the cemetery without a choice before finally finding Agatha’s tomb. She could not help but smile when she saw the elder’s name carved on the stone.
“Hi Agatha, how have you been?” Gwen softly said as she placed the flowers before the grave. She kneeled and touched the carved name, saying, “Unexpectedly, I’m back. I don’t know why fate led me back here, but here I am.”
She looked around the cemetery and observed its well-maintained surroundings. When she glanced at Agatha’s resting place again, she suggested, “I’m glad Port Leon is treating you well.”
Gwen thought about her past conversations with Agatha. The elder had always been excited about when she would become pregnant. So, with this in mind, Gwen squatted on the grass. She took out her phone and flashed photos of Ian. She said, “This is my son, Ian.”
“He would have been so happy to meet you if you were still with us today,” Gwen shared. “He is strong and fast! He will be a great warrior one day.”
Gwen chuckled and gave examples of how Ian outperformed many kids in his school. She said, “You would have been proud of him.”
“I’m a doctor now, just like I had wanted,” Gwen reported. “You had always supported me in my dreams, and you’d be glad to know that despite the challenges in pursuing them, I had succeeded.”
“Although, I don’t know how I would be able to practice my profession if Theo won’t allow me and Ian to return,” Gwen grumbled, sighing at the end of her words.
Gwen spent an hour in Agatha’s resting place before finally deciding to leave. As she and Dunken walked out of the cemetery, she asked, “I have a favor. Theo had mentioned my old Nanny, Helen Bardin? I’d really like to see her.”
A hiss left Dunken’s lips. He said, “That’s crossing borders, Gwen.”
“But isn’t the Blue Valley Pack already Theo’s pack?” Gwen reasoned. “It shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
“Yes, but there is a kilometer of distance between border patrols,” Dunken explained.
“Oh, come on. It’s really not that far,” Gwen asked. “If you are worried about me running away, I won’t run away without my son.”
A groan left Dunken’s lips. He scratched his head and said, “Fine. I’ll ask Alpha Theo first. If he agrees, I will ask Rollin to accompany me.”
Dunken was mindlinking with Theo. Gwen could tell by the expression on his face. After a while, he made a phone call and passed it to Gwen. He said, “Alpha agreed but on one condition.”
Gwen raised a brow. She accepted the phone and answered, “Theo?”
“You can see Helen if you agree to come with me and Ian for a picnic tomorrow,” Theo suggested, and Gwen’s mouth fell on the ground as a reaction.
On the phone, she could hear Ian’s excitement. “Please, Mommy! Please!”
“Um. I’ll think about it,” Gwen answered.
“Then, you are not crossing borders,” Theo firmly said, and Gwen lightly growled.
“Fine,” she muttered. She figured going for the picnic wasn’t so bad.
Minutes later, they drove to the pack’s main entrance to pick up Rollin, Theo’s second in command. Unlike Dunken, Rollin was semi-bald, with black hair and chocolate-colored skin. He turned to Gwen and greeted, “Good morning, Luna.”
“What is it with all of you calling me luna,” Gwen muttered.
Rollin did not say anything at first, but as Dunken drove past the pack’s borders, he turned to Gwen, saying, “About the past, Luna. I’m really sorry for the way I treated you. I hope you’ll forgive me one day.”
‘Okay, that was unexpected,’ Gwen said. It almost brought tears to her eyes.
While behind the wheel, Dunken also said, “And I’m sorry too, Luna Gwen. All of us are.”
“All of you?” Gwen asked.
Rollin and Dunken looked at each other. Rollin clarified, “Well, for us who knows the entire truth, including Ian’s connection to the alpha. Me, Brody, and Dunken.”
“Mmmm. That doesn’t really cover all of you,” Gwen grumbled, but a tear inevitably fell down her cheek. She wiped it with her hand, saying, “But I appreciate it.”
If Gwen was to be completely honest with herself, she earnestly understood. Rollin’s father died during Lucius’ rule. He was one of the warriors that served Theo’s father. Many of them lost a loved one because of Lucius.
“Well, Lucius was quite something,” Gwen remarked, and the two warriors in the front seat acknowledged in their own way.
Now that Gwen thought about it, she and her family had always wondered if Lucius was the one who had kidnapped her. She figured that visiting the Blue Valley Pack might give her answers.
Over an hour passed, and Dunken pulled over a beautiful home that looked almost new. They were within the Blue Valley Pack, Lucius’ former pack. Gwen frowned and asked, “Are we in the right place?”
“Yes, Luna,” Rollin answered. “Alpha Theo had relocated Helen Bardin to this home. Initially, he asked her to work for him, but she preferred staying here. However, our warriors are assigned her check on her now and then.”
Gwen frowned. She asked, “Why would Theo do that?”
The two gammas fell silent for a moment, but later, Dunken said, “I think Alpha Theo was thankful for Helen and for the information she shared with us.”
Gwen gasped. She said, “Well, I guess I better talk to Nana.”
She stood outside the intimate home, knocking on the door for almost a minute. When the door finally opened, the woman before her paled. Her eyes rounded, and she stumbled in her steps.
“Nana, be careful,” Gwen said, catching Helen. “Rollin, Dunken! Help!”
It could not be helped; Gwen’s former nanny lost consciousness, shocked by her arrival.
“Here is some water, Nana,” Gwen offered, passing a glass of water to Helen.
It had been an hour since she arrived. Gwen’s old nanny lost consciousness for over half an hour and was now crying her heart out. Despite Helen’s weeping state, Gwen was happy that her old nanny was in good health.
Helen had definitely aged. Her brown hair had steaks of gray, and her face had formed wrinkles. If her memory was correct, Helen was already in her late eighties.
Helen took a sip of water and returned the glass to Gwen, saying, “I can’t believe it. I had honestly lost hope.”
Finally, Gwen got the full picture of how her former maid and caregiver told Theo about the part, particularly how she had helped deliver food in the dungeons during Lucius’ rule.
“After I told him the truth, Alpha Theo was regretful. I know he continued to search for you, even if many had thought you were dead,” Helen said while wiping her face with a towel. “I tried to tell him that you couldn’t have cheated on him, and it was never your nature.”
“He also sent -” Helen turned to Rollin and Dunken, adding, “I knew he sent warriors here to investigate Lucius’ past and how he treated you.”
“That’s true, Luna Gwen,” Dunken said. The two gammas stayed inside Helen’s home after she had fainted.
“It was Brody who asked around here. He spoke to Lucius’ former followers who are in prison, but he did not find anything more than what Helen shared with us,” Dunken added. “Alpha also tried to disprove the first paternity test, but the hospital no longer had your blood.”
Gwen thought back. Her pregnancy was still too young when she was accused of sleeping with another man, and that was why Theo was not able to smell his pup within her. Thus, Theo relied mainly on the paternity test.
“He also, um -” Rollin massaged his head, revealing, “He had himself retested again, but it still came back the same; the test on his sperm suggested he couldn’t get anyone pregnant.”
“So, with Ian back, he is asking the hospital to explain. Someone clearly manipulated the results,” Rollin resumed.
The revelations left Gwen pondering, but after some time, she faintly said, “Still, I don’t know if that would have been enough to erase all the hate, correct all the wrongs, or make it all even.”
Gwen could not help but cry, saying, “It was just so unfair for me. I did nothing, but I accepted Lucius’ sins as mine to bear.”
“Is it true, Luna Gwen?” Rollin asked. “Theo linked with us earlier, telling us that Lucius is not your father.”
“Lucius is not your father?” Helen asked, looking stunned. “That explains everything!”
“That’s another reason why I am here to see you, Nana,” Gwen said. “Did you never get any indication that I was not Lucius’ daughter? Any clue at all.”
“Well, he treated you poorly,” Helen said. “But other than that, I did not notice anything else.”
“It’s like what we said, Luna. Alpha Theo had already tried to look into this angle,” Dunken revealed.
Silence stretched between them. After some time, Helen said, “There was this one time though. Lucius had a drink with some alphas who visited. One of the alphas suggested they wanted to marry Gwen. Lucius said, ‘Sorry, you can’t take my moneybags.’”
“Moneybags?” Gwen echoed. “What does that mean, Nana?”
“I don’t know, and I did not remember this when Alpha Theo asked me about you. I just thought that Lucius was drunk and talking nonsense.” Helen revealed.
A sigh left Gwen’s lips. She repeated, “Moneybags. Why would Lucius say that?”
