                    ~ Gwen ~
“Lay her flat on the carpet,” Gwen instructed Theo.
However, as Gwen approached Catherine's body, Caroline screamed, “Don’t come near my mother -”
“Caroline!” Theo snarled. “She is a doctor! She can help!”
Because Theo threatened to shift, Caroline had no choice but to back away. Madison did the same, observing what was happening in the packhouse’s living room.
Gwen finally had the chance to attend to Catherine. She felt Catherine's pulse and listened carefully to her breathing. She said, “She is having an arrhythmia. Can we take her to one of the rooms?”
Theo acted fast and brought Catherine to one of the guestrooms upstairs.
While all this was happening, Baron and Jacob came to help. Baron accompanied Ian while Jacob promptly secured whatever medical apparatus Gwen had in the room she shared with Ian.
When Jacob returned to the guestroom, he asked, “What do you want me to do, Gwen?”
“Get out!” Theo ordered Jacob.
“No, you get out, Theo! Get your mother a glass of water while Jacob and I attend to her,” Gwen instructed, and it made Theo growl.
“Hey, lover boy, there is no time to be jealous right now. I’m Gwen’s only assistant,” Jacob barked.
Theo was naturally angry, but he quickly understood. Against his will, he left the room, and only then did Jacob lock the doors behind him.
Gwen did not have a lot of emergency medication with her. After all, her purpose of coming back to Northern Alfar was to rescue her son, but she had a pack of intravenous fluid and two vials of epinephrine, which she had intended to use only for emergency cases.
Jacob helped her get Catherine hooked up. He also checked on her pulse and said, “The medication may not work on time.”
“I know,” Gwen said before finding her scalpel set. She cut her forefinger and walked towards Catherine. She let her blood drip into the elder’s mouth. “This should get her feeling better faster.”
Seconds later, Gwen's wound healed. Gone was the trace of any cut on her finger.
Gwen’s greatest secret was her blood’s extraordinary power to cure any illness. While most members of the Purple-Eye Pack could heal themselves rapidly, Gwen had the unique ability to heal others as well.
The ability to heal others was an incredible gift, but it also posed a significant danger if it fell into the wrong hands. For this reason, Gwen had decided to keep her unique power hidden from the world. Throughout her years of practicing medicine, she skillfully concealed this ability with her family's and Jacob's support.
By the time Theo returned, Catherine’s heartbeat had already normalized. It was a combination of the medication plus the drop of blood from Gwen.
“How is she?” Theo asked, panting as he carried a pitcher of water and an empty glass.
“She is stable,” Gwen replied.
Relief washed over Theo as he placed the water on the bedside table. With Catherine still unconscious, he scrutinized Jacob as he gathered Gwen's belongings.
"You are all good, Gwen? I'll return downstairs," Jacob suggested.
"Yes, she is all good," Theo answered on behalf of Gwen.
When they were alone with Catherine, Theo revealed, "My mother has been sickly since she returned from Borealis."
"Borealis?" Gwen echoed. She questioned because she had been getting patients from the same distant land within Northern Alfar. Gwen had suspected it was a case of poisoning, the kind where the substance is untraceable.
"Yes, why?" Theo asked.
"Nothing. I just heard that many werewolves are getting sick from that area," Gwen remarked.
"They are, and I think it's strange too. That is why it has become Queen Hazel's focus," Theo revealed.
There was a moment of silence before Theo spoke again. He said, "About earlier - about Madison -"
"You don't need to explain it," Gwen said, averting his gaze.
"But I do. Listen, I did propose to her, but that was after I met you in Drad City, and you told me that Jacob was your lover. It was my way of retaliating!" Theo revealed. "I did not actually want to be with her - "
"That is stupid, Theo," Gwen remarked.
"Yes, well, we do stupid things sometimes, Gwen, especially when we are angry. Like when you told me that Jacob was your lover, that was stupid too," Theo pointed out.
"I already canceled my engagement with Madison. That was why she tried to kill herself and was hospitalized. That was why I had to stay with her in the hospital because somehow, it was my fault that she became depressed," Theo revealed. "But I can assure you, I have no feelings for her, Gwen."
"I am serious about making our family whole. You probably heard everything that I had said to my mother and sister," Theo added.
Gwen found it hard to react because she had heard everything. She was truly surprised by what Theo had said and what he was willing to do for her and Ian, but they were just words. Words meant nothing. Besides, could he really control the hate in her sister? Could he really abandon Caroline for her? And if he did that, would his mother come to terms with it?
Caroline Erhart refused to believe that she wasn't Lucius' daughter, likely because she needed someone to hold responsible for the loss of her mate and child during their time in captivity. She would be the biggest threat to the peaceful life that Gwen desired.
Just as Gwen was considering this, Theo's mother regained consciousness. She hummed awake as her eyes fluttered open.
"Mother," Theo promptly sat next to Catherine Erhart. "How do you feel?"
"Give her some water," Gwen instructed, and Theo promptly poured water for his mother.
"Are you feeling better?" Theo repeated while taking back the glass from his mother.
Catherine nodded as she sat up with Theo's assistance. She took deep breaths before saying, "Theo, I can't do this."
She turned to Gwen with a sigh of regret, saying, "Our family has been apart since you had decided to isolate yourself for six years. I want our family to get along. And no woman should ever make you feel the need to abandon your sister, fated or not!"
Theo got up and let out a low growl. He requested, "Mother, please be kind. Gwen was the one who treated you today."
"When you introduced Ian, I was willing to accept him, but when you said you would kick your sister out of the pack for Gwen, that I cannot tolerate!" Catherine hastily removed the needle attached to her, saying, "I don't care if Gwen treated me today. Any doctor would have been able to help me! I did not ask for her help!"
"It is Caroline who needs to compromise here, Mother!" Theo objected.
"No!" Catherine responded firmly. "You need to understand the pain your sister harbors. She lost her mate, father, and child to Gwen's father -"
"And like I said, Gwen is not Lucius' daughter," Theo barked.
"Well." Catherine stared at Gwen before returning her gaze to Theo. She demanded, "You need to prove that so that the people can start fully acknowledging this truth."
"Caroline! Caroline!" Theo's mother called, and Caroline ran upstairs to assist her.
As they exited the room, Ian appeared before them.
Catherine was taken aback. Guilt flashed in her eyes, but very quickly, she looked away, saying, "I'm leaving. Theo, think about what I said. You may be the alpha, but I can always convince the elders to vote you out of your position as needed!"
In the evening of that day, Gwen knocked on Theo's room. When he opened it, she said, "Theo, this will never work. Can't you see? Even if you told them I was not Lucius' daughter, your family was unwilling to accept the facts. Please, let us leave."
