“I have found Gwen and my son; therefore, my obligation is towards them,” Theo replied. “My engagement to Madison is canceled.”
“And to those who kept bringing up Lucius, I have news for you. Gwen is not Lucius’s daughter. She was kidnapped as a baby and taken to Lucius’ pack. He raised her like his daughter, but the truth was, there was no blood relationship between them,” Theo added. “Therefore, I ask everyone to stop holding a grudge against Gwen.”
“She is not Lucius daughter?” Another pack member asked.
“How do you know this, Theo?” One of the elders, Farkas, inquired.
“Six years ago, when the Shadowcloaks rogue group attacked our pack, and we all thought that Gwen had died, she was saved by her real brother, Baron,” Theo said, pointing to where Baron stood.
While everyone’s gazes landed on Baron, her brother mindlinked, ‘What’s going on, Gwen?’
‘I - I don’t know,’ Gwen linked back. ‘He did not tell me he would use you to prove anything.’
“Come up here, Baron,” Theo ordered, and Gwen’s brother was forced to join the elevated platform. As soon as Baron stood before Gwen, Theo requested, “Remove your contact lenses.”
Gwen’s mouth fell to the ground. She glared at Theo, but the latter averted her gaze.
“Remove your contact lenses, including you too, Gwen,” Theo commanded.
“No,” Baron growled in defiance.
However, as soon as Baron answered, the audience became unruly. The pack members threw accusations at Gwen and Baron.
“This must be a scheme.”
“Gwen must be paying that man!”
“She must be Lucius daughter.”
“Maybe that guy is also Lucius son!”
“They are both children of a murderer!”
“Be careful what you say!” Baron barked in anger. “We are not related to Lucius!”
“Uncle, please,” Ian begged. “Show them your eyes.”
Gwen knew that Baron would not be swayed by the judgmental words of the pack members alone, but with Ian’s plea, he finally removed his contact lenses.
At first, Baron closed his eyes. However, after two seconds, he opened them to reveal his purple-colored eyes. Moments later, Gwen did the same, showing her original eye color. Then on, another set of murmurs erupted around the community grounds.
‘Did you tell Theo?’ Baron linked again, asking Gwen. ‘How did he know?’
‘I did not tell him. His maids must have seen you or Jacob remove your contact lenses. Who knows, or does your room have a camera,’ Gwen suggested, making Baron growl in his stance.
“The connection between them is obvious from here. No one else in the werewolf community has purple eyes. This must be a characteristic unique only to Gwen’s family.” Theo turned to Gwen and asked, “Isn’t that right, Gwen?”
“Yes,” Gwen answered unwillingly. “It is a genetic condition which my family has.”
Gwen felt it was an ambush altogether, and she swore she would make Theo pay. Thankfully, she was in the medical field and knew how to explain the uniqueness of their eye color without touching on their packs’ special abilities. She said, “We have an iris abnormality that causes unusual pigmentation, resulting in our eyes to look purple.”
“Ian does not have it because he has Theo’s eyes,” Gwen described.
Mutters could be heard again until one of Madison’s friends pointed out, “Eye color doesn’t prove that she is not related to Lucius!”
“But it does make you question what we all knew in the past,” Theo said. “I believe Gwen. I believe she is not Lucius’s daughter -”
“But that’s not enough proof!” Caroline strongly voiced her resistance.
“Would you be able to prove that she is Lucius’ daughter?” Theo asked his sister. “It’s unfortunate that we threw Lucius’ body into the sea and cannot compare his DNA with Gwen, but regardless, I believe Gwen! She does not have a reason to lie to me.”
“Yes, she does. She wants to be the luna!” Madison declared. “She came back here to steal you from me, Theo -”
“Enough!” Theo growled, his voice seething with rage. “Gwen didn’t steal me from anyone because, from the very beginning, Gwen and I are fated mates!”
The crowd went into an uproar again, stunned by Theo’s revelation. Many wanted to ask more, but Theo cleared the air, ordering, “Silence! I command you all to listen!”
“I knew Gwen was my fated mate even before she disappeared, only that I had refused to accept it, but that version of Theo is long gone. What is left before you now is a man longing for his fated mate! Moreover, I had proven that Ian is my son and that Gwen did not betray me after all!” Theo declared. “At this point, it truly does not matter whether she is Lucius’ daughter; I need my mate and my son!”
“Gwen and I were fated by the Moon Goddess, and I plan to honor that bond by keeping her by my side as my luna!” Theo declared. “I called for this meeting to let you all know because, no matter what, you are my family, my pack, but as your alpha, I ask you to respect my wishes.”
“Doesn’t your alpha deserve to be happy? This is my wish and my happiness! Let me be with my destined mate and my child!” Theo said, his voice resolute.
Theo took a deep breath and scanned everyone present, his gaze moving from left to right. Then he said, “I believe we’ve overlooked Agatha Sanger’s prophecy about Gwen—that she would bear powerful heirs destined to unite our lands. This is why we were initially urged to marry.”
“Elder Farkas,” Theo called one of the elders. “You, for one, favored my marriage to Gwen. Surely, you remember Agatha’s insight.”
“Yes, I do. I remember,” Elder Farkas answered.
“That prophecy is slowly coming true. I have a son with Gwen, and he is a strong pup,” Theo proudly announced while holding Ian in front of him. “Gwen is my fated mate. It can’t be a simple coincidence. Something good - something greater is still about to come to our pack and is all because of Gwen.”
“We have to believe, believe in Agatha’s prophecy, and believe in me, your alpha,” Theo concluded. “Do you all understand?”
There was only silence amongst the crowd, but then again, Theo had commanded the pack members to listen. They could not defy him. After some time, Theo gasped and said, “After today, I expect everyone to regard Gwen and Ian as my luna and alpha heir. Thank you for coming and hearing me. That will be all. I release you from my alpha command. You may return to your work.”
After Theo released everyone from his command, the crowd silently dispersed. Gwen thought Theo’s plan had actually worked! There was no objection whatsoever. Sadly, Caroline walked up to the front and screamed, “I’m sorry, Theo, but I still cannot accept her! Her eye color isn’t enough to prove anything! In my heart, she is still Lucius’ daughter!”
Caroline was crying. She panted as she pointed to Gwen, saying, “Her father killed my husband and my baby! Choose anyone, anyone but her!”
‘Oh, dear.’ Gwen sighed. ‘This is never going to work.’
