                    ~ Gwen ~
'A kiss?' Gwen echoed in her head.
She could say no, but a small part of her felt Theo somehow deserved it.
If Gwen were to be completely honest with herself, she was touched by Theo's recent actions. He stood before his pack, pleading with his people to give him what he desired, which was her and Ian.
Theo revealed to Port Leon that they were fated mates. He admitted regretting his past decisions, and somehow, Gwen felt the sincerity in his words.
These were actions that the old Theo would never do for her. He also tried to defend her against those who refused to believe she was unrelated to Lucius.
However, it was what she had expected; forcing the truth on people was challenging. To Gwen, it was best for Port Leon to come to terms with the truth at their own pace. This only strengthened her resolve to leave, now more than ever.
So, with Theo granting her request, she figured a single kiss would show her gratitude.
Gwen gasped and answered, "Just one."
Clearly, Theo was taken aback. He looked so surprised that she agreed. He wavered for a second, but ultimately, he took the chance and leaned in for a kiss.
Stars.
That was a simple peck, but Gwen felt she was floating on cloud nine. The mate bond was messing with her heart and mind, but what else did she expect? It was how the mate bond worked.
Gwen's heart sprinted. She thought everything played in slow motion as Theo's athletic face inched away from her.
Still, Gwen remained caged in Theo's arms. He looked serious as he continued to stare into her eyes. He asked, "How about one more?"
Her inner wolf was saying yes, but her mind said otherwise. She answered, "Theo, let's not."
"Okay," Theo pulled away completely. He checked the time and said, "We better get back."
As they walked back, Theo said, "You still have not told me about your patient, Gwen, one that may have led to Ian's kidnapping. And because of that, I am assigning Rollin and Dunken to go with you to Southern Alfar."
"What? That won't be necessary, Theo," Gwen responded. "What happened before was a lack of judgment on our part, but I have already requested additional support from the authorities in Cada to help keep us safe."
"You can't make me change my mind on that. Rollin and Dunken will stay with you until they, or I, can fully evaluate that you and my son are safe," Theo said.
Gwen sighed. She supposed she couldn't blame Theo entirely. She would just have to figure it out when they arrive in Cada City. Perhaps, she and Ian won't be going back to the Purple Eye Pack anytime soon, or until the matter with the Northern King is resolved. For that to happen, she badly needed to talk to King Alexander personally.
"Okay, fine," Gwen acknowledged.
After they had reached an agreement, they remained silent for some time until Gwen remembered something. She asked, "How did you know my brother was wearing contact lenses?"
"I spoke to your brother, Gwen. I saw the outline of the contact lenses. Even with Jacob, but it was Krista, the maid, who reported she saw Baron's naked eye in the bathroom when your brother entered while she was cleaning," Theo answered. "So, do all of you have purple eyes?"
"Most of us," Gwen answered.
"Are you going to tell me more?" Theo stopped in his tracks and asked.
Gwen contemplated. She answered, "Maybe."
Theo groaned in frustration. He paused and turned to her, claiming with conviction, "One day, Gwen, you'll let me in, and I'll prove to you that I am worthy."
He gave Gwen his back, and as he watched his frame walking ahead of her, her heart raced. She wondered if that day would truly come.
"Gwen? You've been spacing out for the last five minutes or so," Baron said while they were meeting with King Alexander's royal guards at the packhouse.
"Um. Was I?" She asked, frowning.
The truth was, she was thinking about Theo, rather, the earlier incident that resulted in them kissing.
"Yes, what were you thinking of?" Jacob asked. "I swear you are blushing?"
Gwen gasped, feeling her cheeks. She reacted, "I am not."
Just then, Theo came down from the stairs with Ian, and all the more, she felt her face burn.
"I am going to take Ian to see my mother," Theo revealed. "She won't hurt him, Gwen. It's best I slowly introduce Ian to my mother."
Gwen paused for a second, contemplating, but when she saw the determination in Ian's eyes, she said, "Okay, please take care."
"Bye, Mommy," Ian walked closer to Gwen and kissed her cheek.
Gwen smiled and said, "Be a good boy always. See you later."
"Rollin and Dunken will be around the packhouse. I'm expecting someone to come by the house in a while," Theo said before taking Ian's hand and walking out of the packhouse.
'Did something happen between you and Theo?' Jacob asked, mindlinking.
'No,' Gwen answered outright. 'We just had a more civilized talk this time because he agreed to let us go.'
"Anyway," Baron said to the royal guards. "Theo is letting us leave on Tuesday, so we better be ready. He is arranging everything, including the flight."
"When we arrive, I'd like to speak with the king immediately," Gwen requested.
"I'll inform the palace," Ashton said.
"We are curious, though. Is Ian truly Alpha Theo's son?" Arlo asked. "We heard from the hotel workers. You and Ian were the talk of the entire hotel staff for a day."
"Yes," Gwen reluctantly replied. "But I don't really want to talk about it."
"Looks like you have a complicated past with the alpha," Silas remarked.
Gwen just smiled and said, "You could say that."
"In any case, it's not our business. We are sorry for asking," Arlo said.
"No, I understand. I truly appreciate your professionalism and cooperation," Gwen answered.
After Gwen and their party had finalized their plan for return, the doorbell to the packhouse rang. Since Gwen was close to the door, she opened it and was shocked to see the person before her.
"Doctor Hanson?" Anger surged within Gwen, remembering how this same man was the one who surrendered her to the rogues many years ago. "You -"
Instinctively, Gwen threw a punch at the doctor, but her brother held her hand in mid-air.
"Gwen, stop!" Baron growled.
"Why are you stopping me?" Gwen asked. "He lured me to the rogues more than six years ago!"
"I know," Baron said while trying to hush his words. "He - he was one of those who helped us get you out, Gwen."
Gwen's mouth fell to the ground. She turned to the doctor in shock. "What?"
Doctor Marcus Hanson smiled at her and said, "It's nice to see you again, Gwen. I heard that you are already a doctor. I knew you would become one eventually."
Moments later, Gwen had a one-on-one talk with the doctor at the packhouse's backyard. Doctor Hanson did not hesitate to reveal, "It was I who initiated the latest paternity test between Ian and Alpha Theo. When I saw Ian, my instincts told me he was the alpha's son. After all, I knew you were alive, somewhere."
"Why did you do that?" Gwen asked.
"Because -" Doctor Hanson wavered, but he eventually resumed, "I think Alpha Theo was lonely. If there was a chance that Ian was his son with you, it might help him."
"Gwen, I think Alpha Theo was devastated when you left."
