~ Gwen ~
"Gwen, stop! Don't!" Jacob screamed.
The two remaining rogues continued to advance toward Theo, and despite Jacob's warning, Gwen ran in their direction. She could not make sense of her actions either. All Gwen felt was her anger and pain over Theo's condition. She earnestly feared for Theo's life, and the thought of him being gone hurt more than anything.
Gwen was already four meters away, and the rogues were standing on top of Theo, ready to strike, when suddenly, Theo shifted into his wolf!
He leaped into the air, his claws slashing one rogue. As he landed, he immediately lunged at the second rogue, pinning him down. Theo gave the rogue no chance to escape, sinking his fangs deep into the enemy's neck.
Theo let out a low growl as he swung the rogue's body from side to side. He did so relentlessly until life drained from the enemy.
After Gwen saw that Theo wasn't unconscious, she transformed into her human form and fell to her knees. When Theo saw her, she screamed with tears streaking down her face, "You scared me, Theo! I thought you - Oh, goddess!"
Theo left the lifeless rogues and dashed over to Gwen. In his human shape, he immediately wrapped his arms around her. He held her so tightly and said, "It's okay. I'm wounded, but I'm fine. I had to pretend they got me. They were coming too close to Ian."
Being in Theo's hold consoled Gwen. Although she continued to weep, she unknowingly embraced him too. At the same time, Ian ran toward them.
The pup practically threw himself at them, and Theo caught him with one arm. They were a family of three, nestled in each other's embrace for solace.
Ian could not help but cry his heart out, traumatized by having seen so much blood and death around them. Because of this, Theo continued to offer reassuring words, "I'm here. Daddy is here. Nothing will happen to you and your mommy."
Gwen could not count the number of times Theo kissed Ian on the head, and later, he did the same to her forehead. She did not refuse it. Gwen had to admit it. Theo's hold and affection were genuinely soothing. It was one of those great wonders of the mate bond.
Soon, Theo's other warriors arrived with the medic. He screamed at Jacob, "Tell them Rollin is behind the trees. He has been wounded on his back!"
After Jacob ran towards the arriving vehicles, Theo suddenly growled. Gwen felt confused as she sensed Theo's panic. He suddenly looked around and tightened his hold around her. Then, he looked down at his son, asking, "Where are your mommy's clothes, Ian?"
"There, Daddy," Ian pointed to the distant car, the same one that had nearly flipped on the side of the road.
A growl left Theo's lips. He barked, "Don't look at her!"
Gwen ended up scanning their surroundings. She saw Brody turn around, grumbling, "I wasn't even looking, Theo!"
More and more, threatening snarls left Theo's lips as he got up and carried Gwen's frame. He said, "Come with me, Ian."
"Theo, you are being ridiculous," Gwen complained. "We are werewolves. Nudity is normal -"
"No!" he shouted, his eyes full of anger as if daring anyone to argue. His possessiveness was unmistakable as he tried to cover her with his frame.
When they reached the vehicle with their clothes in it, Theo quickly rested Gwen behind it. He kicked the trunk open and carelessly found a shirt for Gwen to wear.
While Theo forced a shirt down Gwen's body, she felt like a child. Her eyes narrowed as Theo pulled up her arm one at a time to each sleeve. Then, he returned to the trunk in search of her pants. When Theo found one, he handed the garment to Gwen. He stood before her, his eyes watching the commotion around them while fully covering Gwen.
"I can't believe this," Gwen muttered as she hurriedly put on her pants. When she was all dressed up, she asked, "What about you? Do you need clothes? We can borrow from Jacob."
Theo frowned. He reacted, "I don't need to cover up. I am an alpha werewolf!"
"And what does that make me?" Gwen asked.
Theo's eyes formed slits. He replied with conviction, "You are my mate. No one is allowed to see you in the way only I should."
While Gwen was dumbfounded, Theo glanced at Ian. He ruffled his hair and said, "I need to check on Rollin. You stay here with your mommy, okay?"
"Okay, Daddy," Ian nodded before hugging Gwen.
Rollin was indeed wounded, but it wasn't a serious one that required Gwen's blood, and that relieved her. With other warriors around, she did not want anyone to discover her biggest secret.
Ambulances arrived to take the wounded back to Port Leon while the rest of Theo's men secured the area. Simultaneously, Jacob gathered information about the attack. He returned to Gwen, speaking to her through the open window, "All the rogues are dead, so we don't have to worry about the enemies disclosing our weapons."
Gwen looked down at her son, and seeing how he had fallen asleep in her chest, she sighed. Looking back at Jacob, she instructed through mindlink, 'Try to determine if Dunken and the royal guards had, even for a little, an awareness that I gave them blood.'
'I think they were out of it. So, you are clear, but to be sure, I'll go with them to the hospital. I need to watch your brother, anyway,' Jacob answered through linking.
"How is he?" Gwen asked, referring to Baron.
"He is still resting -" Jacob looked back. Then he returned his attention to Gwen, saying, "The first ambulance is leaving with Baron. I need to go. You'll be fine here with Theo."
Gwen nodded, and Jacob left.
As time passed in the car, the two royal guards' deaths returned to Gwen's thoughts. It filled her with guilt and sorrow that she cried for the remaining time they had on the road.
By the time Theo returned to their vehicle, he was stunned to find her in such a state. Theo, already in clothes, climbed into the seat next to Gwen. He put his arm around her and said, "Ssshh."
"Theo," Gwen said softly. "Silas and Rafi are dead, and I'm to blame. This would not have happened if I hadn't decided to leave."
It was obvious that the ambush was for her. After all, Gwen heard it during the rogues' exchanges. So she could only blame herself.
"Shhh." Theo tried his best to hush her cries. He repeatedly pecked her head while ensuring that Ian would not slip out of Gwen's hold. "No one wanted this, Gwen. No one, and I doubt the warriors from Cada blames you. They fought with their lives willingly to protect you and Ian. Like any warrior with a given task, fulfilling his duties is always one's honor."
"But given this experience, I'm sorry, Gwen. I don't think I will allow you to leave my side anymore. I don't know how I would live with myself if anything happened to you and Ian." Theo's lips brushed against her forehead as he declared, "You and Ian will stay with me in Port Leon."
Gwen pulled away slightly. As she stared into his eyes, Theo reasoned, "I am Ian's father and the strongest Alpha of Northern Alfar. No one else is more capable of protecting you and our son. Who else would you trust, Gwen?"
She gave no reaction because deep in her heart, she knew this was the only answer. Theo was right! Who else could she entrust her son's safety to? So, instead of disputing with Theo, she nestled back in his arms, and sleep came sooner than expected.
When Gwen awoke next, she was already clean, in her sleeping dress, and resting beside Ian in Theo's room.
Theo had just entered the room in his white tank top and pajamas, acting like the whole scene was normal.
"You -" Gwen studied herself. Her face burned as she asked, "You bathed and changed me?"
