~ Gwen ~
"Yes, I bathed and changed you, and you are welcome," Theo answered while walking beside Ian. He covered their son's ear and placed a finger on his lips. "Shhh. Be quiet."
"Why did you bathe me? You saw me naked?" Gwen asked in horror.
"Of course, I saw you naked. It wouldn't be the first time. You were naked when I found you on the road hours ago, remember?" Theo answered.
"That's different," Gwen retorted, her face burned in anger.
"Mommy? What's going on?" Ian called, his hand rubbing his eyes.
Theo gave Gwen that look that said 'I told you so.' So, Gwen comforted their son, saying, "I'm sorry, Ian. Your father and I were just talking. Go back to sleep."
Ian turned from lying on his side to resting on his back. He grabbed Theo's arm, and then he held Gwen's hand. Only then did the pup close his eyes.
After making sure that Ian was fast asleep, Gwen let out a heavy sigh. She said, "I shouldn't be here, Theo. I should be at the hospital or at the morgue. I don't deserve to be sleeping here. The warriors from Cada, Dunken, Rollin -"
"My men and the staff at the hospital are taking care of them. I was at the morgue before coming back here. You and Ian were asleep for four hours," Theo revealed. "Allow yourself to rest, and tomorrow, we can go together. Besides, Ian needs you."
"I'm sorry about Rafi and Silas. I will send thanks to their families for protecting you and Ian. It may not replace their lives, but I want their families to know how grateful I am for their efforts in protecting you," Theo said.
Hearing their names again, Gwen became emotional. She said, "Theo, I did not expect this to happen."
Tears brimmed in her eyes as she said, "All I wanted was for us to go back home."
"I know." Theo reached out to Gwen, offering his arms for comfort, "Come here."
This was not part of the plan: to get comfortable with Theo, but she had no one else to talk to and let out her pain. If anyone, being her fated mate, Theo would understand her fully and be able to give her the solace she needed. Thus, Gwen gave in.
Gwen moved closer to Ian and Theo, resting on his shoulder while he wrapped her around in his arm. He let seconds pass by as Gwen simply wept for the loss of Rafi and Silas before he remarked, "This is refreshing, you know, you, not pushing me away."
"I want to feel good," Gwen explained.
"Let me make you feel good," Theo responded.
"I'm just - I'm thankful that the poison did not cause so much damage to you, Dunken and Rollin. They were using Nightshade Thorn Poison," she revealed.
"We figured that," Theo said. "We tested the rogues' nails and also found traces in a small campsite nearby."
Gwen looked up to Theo. He appeared reluctant in his following report, but eventually, he said, "I'm going to tell you a secret about me and my warriors, and I'm telling you this because I trust you, Gwen."
"What is it, Theo?" She asked curiously.
"The poison had little effect on me and my warriors because we have been growing our tolerance to known toxins," Theo revealed. "Wolfsbane, silver, Silvervein serum, Shadowblight Poison, and the latest one is Nightshade."
"What? So, you mean you have been exposing yourselves to these toxins? Isn't that dangerous?" Gwen asked.
"We try it on rats first," Theo revealed. "Then, we try it ourselves in small doses. Of course, we are ready with an antidote."
"It's a risk, I know, but Gwen, many have tried to conquer Port Leon. We have gotten many surprises, from one toxin to another," Theo added. "I was just trying to find a way to keep my pack protected and grow my warrior's strength."
"I see," Gwen noted. "That explains how Dunken and Rollin were able to continue fighting despite being exposed to the poison."
"Yes, if Dunken had not been bitten severely, he would still be able to fight," Theo suggested. "The poison had little effect on him, but it was the loss of blood that weakened him."
"Haven't you noticed? There has been a rise of poisons lately, some in the form of illnesses," Theo pointed out.
Gwen hesitated. After a moment, she revealed, "I have something to tell you. I suspect your mother was exposed to a certain kind of poison."
She explained how she had patients from Borealis who had the same symptoms. She said, "Fatigue, shortness of breath, but no laboratories or doctors could explain the cause of it."
Theo frowned. He asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because, Theo, I can't prove it," Gwen said. "Like I said, laboratories and doctors could not explain it. Instead, I just wanted to cure Catherine, but - but she did not want to."
"Did." Theo frowned, asking, "Did your patients recover?"
"Yes, fully," Gwen said. "Your mother just needs to have a boost of the tea I gave her.”
"I'll follow up on her. Thank you, Gwen," Theo said. He took a moment before he asked, "Do you agree with me? That you and Ian should stay here with me until we figure out who is trying to kill you?"
Gwen gulped. She looked into Theo's green eyes and answered, "Yes, I think it's for the best... for now."
"Good, then, let's start with answering some questions," Theo encouraged. "Do you think today's attempt to take your life has anything to do with that patient of yours, the one that you said you had received threats?"
Again, Gwen wavered but nodded, saying, "I think so because there is no one else. I had never been threatened before in my life."
"Then, it's very important for me to know who this person is, Gwen. Is the patient from Cada? If so, I'm amazed his enemies could send rogues my way," Theo said.
"The patient is not from Cada or Southern Alfar," Gwen finally got up. She looked at her hands and played with her fingers before admitting, "He is... from Northern Alfar."
"Wait, is that why I met you back in Drad City?" Theo asked, and Gwen nodded.
"I'll tell you, Theo, but I'm afraid it's complicated," Gwen said. "I fear for your life too."
"I can handle myself," Theo said confidently. "And, for as long as we stay here in my territory, it will be difficult for the rogues or any enemies to breach my borders."
"I don't know about that," Gwen said, looking down again.
"Gwen," Theo called. This time, his voice was a little demanding.
"Okay. Okay," Gwen said. "You wouldn't believe it if I told you."
At that point, Theo narrowed his eyes. Gwen took a deep breath and finally said, "My patient's name is Arthur Hazma."
Theo's brows met. He formed a complicated expression on his face as he reacted, "No, fucking way."
"And the warriors from Cada, they weren't just ordinary warriors. They were royal guards of King Alexander Hazma. It was King Alexander's orders that I help cure King Arthur, and that's how I got entangled in this mess to begin with,” Gwen added.
"Fuck," a hiss left Theo's lips. He massaged his temples and asked, "You - are the miracle doctor they spoke of?"
~ Madison ~
Meanwhile, at Port Leon Hospital, Madison met with one of the female doctors, Hanna.
“Here is your money, Doctor Hanna. Now, do your part,” Madison said before she lay in a hospital bed.
Madison purposely came that night while the facility was disorganized because of the recent attack. Her arrival alerted no one; thus, she was confident her actions would go unnoticed.
Doctor Hanna hesitated as she looked down at the sample in her hands. She gasped and said, “I’m afraid. What if Alpha Theo discovers we stole a sample of his semen.”
“He won’t,” Madison assured her. “Inseminate me while the other doctors are still busy. Hurry.”
Madison spread her legs, and Doctor Hanna proceeded with the insemination. When they were done, Madison said, “You did the right thing. Besides, would you rather that Gwen return as our Luna?”
“Right. We can’t have that.” Doctor Hanna resealed the sample in her hand and said, “I better get this back to the laboratory.”
When Madison was alone, she smirked. She caressed her belly and said, “I will be pregnant with Theo’s child soon, so he will have no choice but to take responsibility.”
