"No! Stop!" Theo winced in his sleep. His head snapped in the other direction as he became absorbed in his dream. "I will kill you, Lucius! One day, I will end you!"
Theo jerked awake, gasping. The memory of their captive days fully aroused him.
It had been a year since their freedom, yet the horrors of Lucius' rule still haunted him in his sleep.
Theo got up and drank a full glass of water from his bedside table. He stood by his room's window and reflected on his pack's painful past. Many died in Lucius' hands. Theo might have died too if not for a mysterious woman who had secretly given him and his warriors food and water.
Unfortunately, Theo never knew who the woman was and how she got past Lucius' guards. All he knew was that the same woman suffered in Lucius' hands, punished for the help she had extended.
When Theo won the war, he tried to ask about the mysterious woman. He suspected she belonged to Lucius' pack, The Blue Valley Pack, but the same neighboring pack, which had now fallen under his leadership, knew nothing about her.
"Whoever you are, thank you," Theo said under his breath. "You gave us all hope. I hope you survived. If you didn't, I pray that your soul has rested together with the Moon Goddess above."
When morning came, Theo had visitors. His mother and sister had arrived to confirm Madison's report.
"Is it true?" Catherine Erhart, Theo's mother, asked in fury. "That woman tried to keep her luna position by getting herself pregnant with another man? Where is she? I had been holding back for so long, but now that Agatha is gone, I want her to suffer!"
"We should get rid of her now, Brother," Theo's sister, Caroline, suggested.
Although they were Theo's family, his mother and sister had moved out of the packhouse because they refused to live with Gwen. Hence, the Erharts' home belonged solely to Theo and Gwen for a year.
Shaking his head, Theo turned to Madison. Naturally, she came with his family. He said, "You should have let me tell the news."
"I could not resist telling them. I was boiling in anger, thinking Gwen wanted to trap you," Madison revealed.
"Where is she?" Theo's mother sped to the staircase and found Gwen's room. She unlocked it, and when she saw Gwen, Catherine raised her hand to slap her!
"No!" Gwen screamed, recoiling at the near impact.
"Stop!" Theo ordered. He turned up just in time to hold his mother's wrist.
"Theo? Why would you stop us?" his mother questioned, and hurt flickered in her eyes.
"Yes, Theo, she deserves to be punished!" Caroline pointed out, and Madison echoed the same.
"I am the alpha, so I will decide on her punishment! If I want to hurt her, I will hurt her!" Theo said, his voice raised. "Do you question me, your alpha?"
"But son, don't you see? She is more than just this scheming woman!" Catherine broke down in tears, her chest heaving as she reminded, "Have you forgotten how her father killed your Dad!"
"Mother, I remember very well! You need not remind me. Rest assured that Gwen will get the punishment she rightfully deserves." With a tight jaw, Theo declared, "She will be exiled!"
"Exiled? No! Theo, don't! This is your child!" Gwen burst into tears, hearing what he had planned for her.
"You! How could you pin your pregnancy on my brother!" Caroline charged at Gwen, and she managed to pull her hair.
Theo had to drag his sister out of Gwen's room. He barked, "Enough! Everyone out! Whether we like it or not, she is still recognized as my luna among the council of alphas. Until then, we need to be careful with our actions!"
Theo's family was outraged. They wanted to hurt Gwen, but Theo ordered them out of the packhouse, including Madison.
When Theo was alone with Gwen, she immediately hugged his knees and begged, "Please, Theo. Do not exile me and your child. Where will we go? I can't even stay in my father's lands anymore. I have no family members. I have no one to lean on to!"
"You do not have a say in your future, given what you did. So stop complaining!" Theo answered. "I heard you did not eat your food. I don't care what happens to you, Gwen, but there is at least an innocent pup in your womb you need to feed!"
"Minda!" Theo ordered the housekeeper, "Bring some food for Gwen!"
Inside the room, he watched as Gwen forced food down her throat. When she was done, Gwen suddenly kneeled before him and begged, "Please, Theo. Let's at least have a paternity test. I can prove to you that you are the father."
'Paternity test?" Theo repeated in his head. 'How could Gwen be so bold?'
"So, your connection in the hospital runs deep that you can fake a paternity test," Theo said bitterly.
"No!" Gwen answered. "No, Theo."
Gwen reached for his hand and pleaded, "Please, do this for me as a birthday gift. I will have my birthday in four days, Theo. I beg you the chance to prove my innocence."
"It will prove nothing!" Theo reminded. "Do you not understand what infertile means?"
"Please, let's just do it," Gwen insisted. "I have been faithful, I swear, and I have performed all my duties devotedly despite your people hating me. You could at least reward me with this benefit of the doubt."
Theo froze, acknowledging the truth in her words. Gwen had done everything to contribute to the pack. As a healthcare worker, she represented Theo in conducting medical missions. As the Luna, she initiated educational projects for children and teenagers. She worked tirelessly. Although his people accepted her contributions, they continued to detest her.
He looked down at Gwen. Her hands were clasped together in a desperate gesture, trembling. The sight of her tear-streaked cheeks compelled Theo to compromise. He said, "Fine. Let's go now."
Theo brought Gwen to the hospital. They took samples of his DNA and Gwen's blood. The results would be out in four days, which was also Gwen's birthday.

"Happy birthday, Gwen," she sadly greeted herself before hugging her knees. She looked out the window and prayed, "Could I at least have one meaningful birthday gift, Moon Goddess?"
Four days had passed since Gwen's blood was taken for a paternity test. She was still locked up in her room, sitting on the floor and waiting for the news to arrive. She did not sleep at all, unable to rest her panicking heart.
It was midday when Theo finally came with the news she had longed to hear.
Theo entered with his usual stern expression. He pulled the test results from his jacket pocket and threw them in her face.
Gwen's body trembled as she picked up the results. Slowly, she unfolded the paper and then read the report. Wide-eyed, she gasped, "This -"
