                    ~ Gwen ~
“We need space, Theo,” Gwen said while trying to close the door before him.
Theo narrowed his eyes. His gaze redirected to Jacob inside. He complained, “Why does it have to be Jacob? Why can’t I be the one to help you?”
Gwen frowned. She replied, “Jacob had always been the one who helps me with patients. Please, Theo. Go to Ian and stay with him. I’ll only be here for a few minutes with Arlo. Then, I’ll see Ashton, Dunken and my brother. If there are others who are severely wounded, too, I’ll see them.”
A low growl left Theo’s lips. He glared at Jacob through the small opening of the door. Gwen did not have to guess it. It was clear through Theo’s expression that he was warning Jacob with his stare.
“Theo, don’t do that!” Gwen scolded, and finally, Theo left, but he did so lazily.
With no one else around, Gwen quickly locked the door and retrieved a syringe from a small, insulated carrier. She had already drawn blood back at the packhouse, prepared to treat those severely injured—whether unconscious from blood loss or poisoned.
Jacob helped lift Arlo upright, and Gwen slowly fed him with her blood. The royal guard was still unconscious, hooked to an IV, and had several bandages.
Gwen sighed, watching Arlo. She grabbed his hand, saying, “You’ll be okay.”
They were about to head to Ashton’s room when Jacob suddenly asked, “Have you gotten back with Theo?”
Gwen was startled by Jacob’s question. She frowned and answered, “What makes you think that?”
“Obviously, you both had gotten cozy,” Jacob said while at the door. “Don’t forget what he did to you, Gwen. Don’t easily give your heart to him. He doesn’t deserve you."
Jacob’s words brought her back to when Theo ignored her as a wife. She almost felt the same kind of pain more than six years ago. She gulped and replied, “I did not forget, but I also can’t deny the changes in him and the fact that he is Ian’s father. You saw what he did, how he saved us."
She paused and said, “But you don’t have to worry. Nothing is going on between us. I’m still guarding my heart. I can’t help but seek his comfort because he can give it to me, being my fated mate. I was hurt, devastated, and guilty for what happened with the royal guards. Aside from that, warriors from Theo’s end were also hurt. Surely, you must understand how I feel.”
“Don’t go back to him, Gwen. Don’t,” Jacob firmly suggested. “You need to sit down and find the time to reject each other.”
Gwen was shocked by Jacob’s suggestion. For someone who had always supported her, she did not expect this to come from him. She frowned and said, “Whether or not I go back to Theo, it’s for me to decide. And as my friend, I expect your support. As Ian’s uncle, I expect you to be happy for him.”
“A friend?” Jacob asked as he grabbed Gwen’s arm. “Will you only see me as a friend, Gwen?”
Gwen’s heart raced as Jacob’s words caught her completely off guard. She was so stunned that she couldn’t find the words to respond.
She looked away and instead said, “Let’s go to Ashton.”
~ Theo ~
“The miracle doctor of Southern Alfar,” Theo said under his breath. He still could not process what Gwen revealed about herself. He barely had sleep last night, just imagining her life in another nation and the kind of people she had met and helped.
He felt proud of Gwen, but he was also sad. It broke Theo’s heart when he realized he was not around to witness Gwen’s triumphs and struggles as she eventually became a famous healer. Theo imagined how fortunate it would have been if Port Leon had someone like Gwen.
“This pack has got to change,” Theo muttered as he exited the hospital. He sighed, thinking about his sister and a fraction of his pact that remained to dislike Gwen.
It was a piece of crucial information about Gwen, but she had requested Theo to keep it to himself. Of course, Gwen understood that such a secret would be relayed to his beta and loyal gammas.
He hopped in the car where Ian had been waiting for him and Brody behind the wheel.
“When will Mommy be done, Daddy?” Ian asked.
“Your mommy will need some time. Would you like to get some snacks while we wait?” Theo asked.
Ian shook his head and hugged Theo. He said, “I just want to stay here with you. I’m scared that another rogue will come after me.”
Theo pecked Ian’s head and said, “There is no need to be scared. You are within my pack, and you are safe here.”
Turning to his Beta, Theo mindlinked, ‘Brody, have you contacted the king?’
‘I have called Ivor. He is aware of the situation in Port Leon and was shocked to learn that the attack was meant for Luna Gwen,’ Brody responded through mindlink.
‘Did you tell him that I will see the king?’ Theo asked.
‘You don’t have to see the king, Theo. King Arthur would like to see Gwen himself. He is coming to Port Leon. He did not mention when but said they are arranging it,’ Brody answered. ‘They are just ensuring that it is safe to travel.’
‘If there was a threat to Gwen, they are not discounting the possibility that there is also a threat to the King’s life,’ Brody added.
Theo’s eyes narrowed. He hissed inside and linked back, ‘But who, who could want King Arthur dead?’
~ Caroline ~
Caroline was helping Catherine drink her medication in bed. Her mother struggled to breathe as she leaned back on the headboard. She said, “You know, Caroline, when Gwen treated me, I did feel much better. Maybe I should see her. I heard that she did not get to leave -”
“Nonsense!” Caroline barked. “We were attacked because of her! From what I know, the rogues were after Gwen, and the attack on the pack was a decoy!”
“Can’t you see? Gwen has made enemies! I wonder what she has done in Southern Alfar.” Caroline said through gritted teeth. She gasped, studying her mother’s weak state. Fear crept into her heart. She said, “I’ll bring you to the hospital tomorrow. I’ll let Theo know of your condition.”
The news of Gwen’s return had spread like wildfire within the pack. Many were angered about how warriors were injured because of Gwen. While Theo’s men did not blame Gwen, their wives and families did.
So, yes, Caroline and Catherine knew Gwen never left. It was funny how they rejoiced about Gwen’s departure, only for her to return the same day.
After putting her mother to rest, Caroline was about to call Theo when the doorbell to their home rang. She hurriedly made it down and found Madison standing in the living room. A maid had let her in.
“I have great news,” Madison said. “Remember my distant aunt who had recently landed a job at Dradhold Castle?”
Caroline nodded. She remembered this aunt of Madison who had worked as a financial adviser to the king.
“My aunt mentioned that she overheard the king and the royal beta discussing visiting Port Leon. She’s always known about my feelings for Theo and how he still hasn’t married me,” Madison explained. “So, she promised to visit and be here when the king arrives. She said she would try to convince the king to arrange for me to become Theo’s wife.”
“Wow,” Caroline remarked. “By order of the king? That might actually work, Madison.”
“Of course, it will! If the king orders it, Theo has no choice,” Madison declared with a laugh.
“Well, that better happen soon because Gwen is staying with Theo again, and if they are true mates, it’s going to be hard to break them apart,” Caroline suggested.
