                    ~ King Alexander ~
“Brother, I want you to know I wish nothing more than your safety and full recovery,” Alexander began. “So, I want to start by asking if you have fully considered all possible angles. Who would benefit from your death?”
“And this same person has to have the right resources to deploy rogues to my country, gather the same kind of criminals to attack Port Leon, and at the same time, have access to newly developed illegal poisons,” Alexander added.
Arthur continued to drink his tea. He placed his teacup on the table and answered, “I have narrowed down my suspects to two alphas who want to take my place as king.”
“There is Alpha Thorn. He had always been very vocal in expressing his interest in being king. Then, there is Alpha Madlock,” Arthur shared. “Madlock is one of my Alphas who is defiant, much like Alpha Lucius, but instead of openly being ruthless, I have heard stories of how he is secretly doing illegal activities. Ivor and I have been investigating this Alpha for the last few years now, only that, he seems very careful.”
“Are you sure? Have you checked all their resources?” Alexander asked.
Arthur wavered. He caressed his chin, saying, “Well, Alpha Thorn doesn’t really have enough resources, but Alpha Madlock might be hiding funds. He has his pack secured tightly.”
"Is there no one else you suspect?" Alexander inquired.
“I honestly don’t know anyone else,” Arthur insisted. “Well, any alpha could be secretly wanting to take my place -”
“As of now, who did you appoint to take your place should you pass away?” Alexander asked.
“Well, no one, really. Hazel being my queen, will remain in power - Wait.” Arthur’s face reddened. His voice raised, “What are you suggesting, Alexander? Is this still about Hazel? I thought you had changed and that you truly wanted what was best for me!”
Alexander hesitated, but he soon answered, “I do want what is best for you. I’m not saying that it’s Hazel; I’m just asking you to open your eyes to every possibility. Brother, I don’t want to lose you. Regardless of our past misunderstanding, you are my only family.”
“Was it a misunderstanding?” Arthur asked, his hands clenching into fists.
Alexander paused. He remembered how stubborn his older brother was, and Arthur was still the same to that day. He said, “I am not here to argue with you, Brother.”
“Why don’t you consider this -” Alexander looked around, and after finding Doctor Weneth seated at another table with her family, he mindlinked with her, ‘Doctor.’
Having sworn to an alpha within Southern Alfar, Alexander could naturally mindlink with her. He said, ‘Come over here for a moment.’
"Doctor Weneth quickly made her way to their table, where Alexander asked, “Doctor, can you share your findings on my brother?”
The doctor smiled. She sat before them and described, “I cannot find the cause of the symptoms, but I can cure him.”
“How long will it take?” Alexander asked.
The doctor studied King Arthur. Then, she walked closer to him and felt his pulse. She said, “I will require the king to undergo a new series of lab tests, but in my opinion, about ten days of treatment.”
Arthur frowned. He asked, “Doctor, the last we spoke, you said I only required one more week of treatment.”
“Yes, Your Highness, but our treatment was interrupted, and I sensed that your health had declined since I last saw you,” Doctor Weneth said. “I - I actually meant to ask you if anything had changed. Did you take the supplements that I had given you? Did you deviate from the diet which we had already agreed on? Did you take your morning and evening walks?”
“I did, I did -” Arthur paused, and then, he admitted, “Well, sometimes, Hazel cooks, and I can’t resist her cooking, but I only take a bite, or if it's a soup-based food, I sip a little.”
Immediately, Alexander’s eyes narrowed, and he was certain Arthur caught his reaction. Arthur growled, “Be careful what you say, Alexander.”
“I wasn’t going to say anything. I just wish that you had strictly followed the doctor’s orders,” Alexander expressed. “And with how your health has deteriorated since you last met with Doctor Weneth, I suggest that you resume your treatment here in Port Leon, under your doctor’s supervision.”
Arthur’s brows met. His mouth fell open, clearly about ready to object. Before that could happen, Alexander commanded the doctor through mindlink, ‘Please agree with me, Doctor. This is the only way for my brother to get healed completely. I beg you! You are my only hope to make this happen.’
Out of the corner of his eyes, he caught the doctor’s panicked expression, but she soon said, “I - I agree, Your Highness.”
“Let’s not leave Port Leon until you are better. What is ten days? Consider it a vacation,” the doctor suggested.
‘Thank you,’ Alexander linked with the miracle doctor. ‘You don’t know how much this means to me. We shall talk later about all the arrangements.’
“I -” Arthur frowned. “I need to discuss this with my queen -”
“What for? Shouldn’t this be your priority? Your health? We have already put the doctor’s life and her son in danger. Do we need to move the doctor and risk her life again?” Alexander firmly said. “I believe this is the safest place for Doctor Weneth, under the protection of your strongest warriors, don’t you agree?”
“I agree with King Alexander, My King,” unexpectedly, Theo invited himself into the discussion. “I’m sorry, Your Highnesses, but I overheard your conversation when I was passing by. If it involves Gwen, I want to be part of the decision-making because she and my son are my responsibility and mine to protect.”
"My son has already been traumatized—he was kidnapped and witnessed bloodshed. Though the ordeal will make him stronger, he is not yet prepared to face such extreme circumstances," Theo described.
Arthur clearly thought about it deeply, then he studied himself. Alexander could only assume that his older brother was evaluating his health. After a moment, Arthur looked up to him and replied, “Okay. I - I guess that make sense.”
Alexander gasped. After Arthur agreed, he nearly cried for joy. He stood up and said, “That makes me happy.”
Before his brother could reply, Alexander hugged Arthur. He knew his actions surprised Arthur. Even he had not planned it. Alexander knew it was the best way to show he was sincere. Instead of using words, he hoped the hug would show the kindness and peace he wanted Arthur to feel—no ill intentions, only the desire to make things right.
“Thank you, Brother. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to have a word with the doctor and Alpha Theo. I’d like to know the conditions of my men who are in the hospital,” Alexander said, but his real intention was to discuss with Gwen on the terms of his brother’s treatment.
He turned to Theo and Gwen, asking, “Can we speak in private?”
Heartbeats later, Alexander was in an empty conference room with Doctor Weneth and Alpha Theo. He glanced at the doctor and asked, “So, your parents tell me that your full name is Gweneth Allard, that they call you Gwen, but how would you like me to address you, Doctor?”
“Either way is fine, My King,” the doctor said politely before bowing in his presence.
“Gwen it is, then,” Alexander said with a smile. “I have a favor to ask.”
Gazing at Theo, he added, “From both of you.”
“Now that my brother has agreed to resume his treatment here in Port Leon, you must promise me to monitor everything around him, his contacts, the food that he eats, the water that he drinks, the medications he takes, and anything that could affect his health,” Alexander said.
“I’ll be frank with you.” Alexander revealed, “I suspect my brother’s illness is not a coincidence, and the fact that the doctor’s life is being threatened adds to my suspicion.”
“Who do you suspect, My King?” Gwen asked.
Alexander sucked in a deep breath. He said, “No one else, but the same person who had caused a rivalry between us - Arthur’s wife, Queen Hazel.”
Alpha Theo winced while Gwen gasped.
Following his revelation, dead air probably stretched for almost a minute. Eventually, Gwen requested, “Please, My King. Explain to us everything. Let us know what we are getting into. It’s only fair, for my life and that of my son is also at stake. What truly happened between you and King Arthur.”
“I agree,” Theo said. “You are indirectly asking me to go against my king. You must give me the right reasons to do so. Tell us.”
Alexander gasped again. He said, “Okay. I will tell you. It all started when I was still twenty-one years old, more than sixty years since our disagreement.”
He looked up and said, “One night changed everything -”
