~ Gwen ~
“Hazel arrived in Drad City like a thief in the night,” King Alexander remarked. “It was unexpected, and she immediately captivated every young man in the city with her beauty and elegance.”
Gwen listened attentively to King Alexander’s story while Theo furrowed his brows in concentration beside her.
“I think I remember this part of the story,” Theo muttered. “I remember my mother saying that the queen is not a local in Alfar.”
“No, she isn’t,” Alexander affirmed. “Hazel and her mother relocated to Drad City from New Arcadia, a nation located three countries away from Alfar.”
“I remember her mother, Victoria Ashford.” Alexander described, “She dressed like a queen and always had her head up. She was wealthy. Hazel and her mother were immediately granted as immigrants into Alfar due to the potential businesses Victoria could offer Drad city, and she did.”
“Victoria Ashford had opened up three grocery stores in the city. If you had stayed in Drad long enough, you would have come across the HM Supermarkets,” Alexander narrated.
“Anyway, the problem did not start there. It began when Hazel, my older brother, and I started taking college at the same university and training in self-defense together.” Shaking his head, Alexander said, “I won’t deny it. Even though she was a little older than me, I was attracted to Hazel. As I said, every young man admired her beauty, her skills, and the fact that she came from a wealthy family.”
“I couldn’t comprehend her at first,” Alexander hissed. “At times, it seemed like she had feelings for me, yet she also gravitated towards my older brother. Arthur and I were once inseparable—he was my protector, and I admired him deeply. But because of Hazel, resentment began to fester within me.” I resented the attention she gave him, and little did I know that my brother shared the same feelings of jealousy toward me.”
“That situation between us brothers continued for over a year until my father had hinted that Arthur would most likely be crowned as the next alpha king.” Alexander looked distantly and said, “After that, I noticed that Hazel began focusing on Arthur. They officially became a couple and then engaged in a very short time.”
“I quickly understood that Hazel intended to align herself with the brother who would inherit the crown. After that realization, I began competing with my brother. I outwitted him in some council meetings with the alphas and pushed myself to train harder, becoming a better warrior,” Alexander continued. “This rivalry left my father uncertain about who should be named the next king. I believe that’s why Hazel came to my room one night.”
Alexander looked up to Gwen and Theo, declaring, “And that one night changed everything.”
He shut his eyes, saying, “I wished I had not opened the door and had just slept.”
“What happened, Your Highness?” Gwen asked curiously. She could feel Alexander’s pain as he recounted the past.
FLASHBACK
“Alexander? How about we celebrate how you won the match against Arthur’s best friend?” Hazel said the second Alexander opened the door. She was already carrying a bottle of werewolf liquor and was dressed seductively.
Earlier that day, Alexander won a fighting match against Ivor, Arthur’s potential beta, which garnered many praises from the elders.
A smirk became painted on Alexander’s face. He asked, “Are you here to seduce me, Hazel? Aren’t you getting married to my brother?”
“Why can’t I celebrate with you? We are still friends, aren’t we?” Hazel suggested. “Just let me in. Besides, I already brought the liquor!”
Alexander did not know why he still let Hazel in. Perhaps, deep inside, he still wanted Hazel to choose him over Arthur. They drank and talked about the fight in the next few minutes, and the rest was a blur.
When Alexander awoke the next day, he was lying beside Hazel without his shirt. Hazel was sleeping on the other side of the bed, with only her underwear.
“Wha the hell, Hazel?” Alexander yelped. He could not remember a thing. “Wake up, Hazel. Wake up? What happened?”
When Hazel jerked awake, she panicked and snapped her head in every direction. When she realized the state she was in, she immediately screamed, “Alexander, you touched me! Why did you touch me? I’m going to marry your brother! How could you?”
“I don’t know what happened, Hazel! Don’t you dare accuse me!” Alexander barked.
“Arthur! Arthur! Help!” Hazel cried.
“Shut up! I did not do anything!” Alexander growled.
Their loud outburst caught attention from outside Alexander’s room, and soon, Arthur found them. Alexander and his brother quickly became engaged in a fight, and his room turned upside down until their father arrived.
King Edmund Hazma, Alexander and Arthur’s father, attempted to settle the conflict by using his alpha command. He ordered Hazel and Alexander to tell the truth. He asked, “I command you both to tell me what happened. Did you sleep together?”
“No, Father! I don’t remember doing such a thing!” Alexander barked. “She came to my room to seduce me. She was the one who brought the werewolf liquor! We were just drinking, and I can’t remember anything else!”
On the other hand, Hazel cried before King Edmund. She claimed, “I woke up without my clothes! He must have touched me against my will or had taken advantage of me!”
“Did you try to seduce my other son, Hazel?” King Edmund asked.
“No, My King, I only wanted to celebrate his win and talk about his fight for the crown!” Hazel said as she wept. “I only wanted him to back down for Arthur! I did not want to end up in his bed!”
END OF FLASHBACK
Back to the present.
“My father, the former king of Alfar, found faults on both sides but nothing conclusive to suggest something happened between us. He had the empty liquor studied, but they found no trace of any added potion whatsoever, “King Alexander revealed.
“Hazel underwent a medical evaluation and found no signs of assault. Until this day, I do not know how I ended up in the same bed with her. Hazel maintained her innocence. As for me, I will never take back my word, for that was the truth.”
“That’s when things went from bad to worse between Arthur and me. We argued constantly, and it often escalated into physical fights. There wasn’t a single day of peace in Dradhold Castle while we lived under the same roof. Arthur was so blinded by his love for Hazel that he never questioned her.”
“As for me, my father couldn’t punish me without proof, and he loved me as much as he loved Arthur,” Alexander continued. “Despite everything, I kept demonstrating my worth as a potential king, to the point where the elders and the council of alphas were divided over who should be chosen as the next leader.”
“A year later, my father made the decision to divide Alfar, granting the northern territories to Arthur, while I was given the South,” Alexander stated. “In a way, I felt a sense of relief in leaving Dradhold Castle behind.”
“I left with only anger in my heart towards Hazel and Arthur,” Alexander concluded. “When the nation was separated, the truth about what caused the rift between us was kept in forced silence. It never left the castle walls.”
There was silence in the room before Gwen raised, “My King, you can’t necessarily blame King Arthur -”
“I know. A small part of me had intended to win Hazel over, but after that incident, I strongly believe that she is a conniving woman. I tried to tell Arthur, but he couldn’t see right through her,” Alexander explained. “It just wouldn’t work for us. So, over the years, I lead Southern Alfar differently from how my brother led his nation.”
“I never looked back. Only my father visited me now and then, and even in his death, my pride did not let me return to Drad City to attend his wake,” Alexander said, this time, with a tear welling in his eyes. “All I could do was see him in his resting place days after the burial.”
“I have not communicated with Arthur until recently, news of his illness reached my ears.” Alexander gulped and admitted, “I began to feel sorry for him, and... I honestly feared losing him.”
“Wait,” Gwen said while raising her palm. “So, the medical evaluation proved that nothing happened between you and Queen Hazel?”
“Yes, but our conflict was irreconcilable,” Alexander confirmed. “I know it’s a shame that our family became broken because of that woman, but it’s the truth.”
Gwen and Theo exchanged glances after King Alexander finished his tale of the past. She could see the doubt in Theo’s eyes, and deep down, she was unsure what to believe either. She could only rely on her past experience with King Alexander, which had been positive so far.
King Alexander was a compassionate leader of Southern Alfar, and his willingness to help his brother spoke volumes about his sincerity.
“Look,” Alexander said. “Alpha Theo, Doctor. I don’t expect you to believe me fully. I only beg that you treat my brother and see to it that Hazel does not interrupt his treatment.”
“If I’m mistaken and Hazel is not to blame for my brother’s illness, then I admit I’m wrong! But he will recover. However, if my suspicion is accurate and we allow Hazel to interfere with his treatment, we might inadvertently endanger his life. So, please, will you help me with this?”
