"Theo?" Gwen's voice was filled with shock, seeing how infuriated her husband looked. She silently asked, 'Shouldn't he be calmer after learning he is the father?'
She nervously picked up the paper that had fallen onto the floor and flipped it open. Then, she read, "The probability of paternity is 0% -"
A gasp escaped Gwen's lips. She reacted, "This cannot be! Theo -"
"It is what it is!" Theo's voice strengthened as he pointed at Gwen. "I don't even know why I did the paternity test to begin with! I feel like a fool for even trying!"
He marched toward her, seething, which made Gwen retreat to the nearest wall. He grabbed the test result and declared, "Now there is evidence of your betrayal. The elders will easily agree to my plans to reject you!"
"Theo, please," Gwen begged on her knees. "I swear to the Moon Goddess above, this is your child! I haven't been with any other man! I only love you -"
"Stop! Enough of this nonsense!" Theo's voice was tense as he proclaimed, "It's over, Gwen. We are getting a divorce!"
"Stay here until the elders and I have agreed to the rejection ceremony, which will happen very soon," Theo warned. "Be prepared for whatever punishment that we will give you!"
Theo's footsteps echoed heavily on the floor as he left the room. The door shut with a resounding bang, leaving Gwen to cry, "Theo! Theo, please! Let's have a second paternity test!"
~ Theo ~
"Good afternoon, Elders," Theo greeted, seeing everyone was already present. Brody, being his beta, stood behind him and regarded the elders the same way.
Theo wasted no time. He immediately scheduled the meeting with the elders in the afternoon.
There were five remaining elders in Port Leon; one was Theo's mother, Catherine Erhart. Two of them were financial advisers whose families had engaged in trade for many years. Their names were Gallagher and Odesa, both werewolves in their centennial years, just like Agatha.
The fourth elder was Boris, the pack's arbitrator. Boris used to live in the capital of Northern Alfar but moved to Theo's pack to help rebuild the town after the war.
The last elder was Farkas, a warrior who had served Theo's grandfather and had survived Lucius Darwin's hands.
"What is this meeting about, Theo?" Boris asked.
Before a round table, Theo stood up and said, "As you know, I have tried to live up to Agatha's prophecy over the year, but sadly, Gwen and I failed to conceive."
He paused and looked at his mother. Catherine nodded and encouraged, "Go on, Son. Tell them."
"I had myself tested," Theo revealed. He gave the go signal to Brody, and the latter distributed copies of the test results.
"As it turns out, I am infertile," Theo admitted. "It wasn't a secret that many years ago, I had become ill as a child. It was a plague that affected many werewolves, especially the pups. The doctor who studied me believes it may have affected my ability to produce healthy sperm."
"Wait a minute, Alpha," the elder Odesa frowned. She asked, "The problem is the healthy sperm, but does that mean in vitro fertilization would work?"
"The hospital investigated the matter, but unfortunately, they confirmed that IVF would not work either, given the condition of my sperm," Theo reported. "And because of that, I firmly believe that Agatha might have made a mistake this time."
"What are you saying, Alpha Theo?" Boris asked.
"I am saying that the marriage forced between Gwen and I was wrong from the start," Theo said firmly. "Apparently, Gwen was holding on to this prophecy."
"Gwen!" With a repulsed tone, Theo revealed, "Got herself pregnant by another man! And she was hoping to use this pregnancy to keep her luna position."
"You see, everyone!" Catherine stood up. Her face was red from fury. "Gwen has betrayed her oath as our luna and my son's wife! How can she be pregnant if Theo is infertile?"
"She denies it, of course, but the truth is there," Catherine added.
"Are you certain about this, Alpha?" Elder Farkas inquired. "We don't want to repeat past mistakes. If we are wrong, we could forfeit the favorable prophecy that should be bestowed upon us."
"I am sure of it!" Theo verified. He looked at Brody and ordered, "Distribute the paternity test."
"Of course, I had a paternity test done, and as you can see there, I did not father Gwen's child," Theo revealed. "To begin with, I never wanted this marriage, and now, she dares to try and fool me."
Murmurs echoed in the room. The elders talked amongst themselves, shocked by the revelation.
"How dare she? After we took her in and kept her alive?" Odesa pointed out.
"Exactly what I said!" Catherine remarked.
"Well, we never wanted her," Gallagher brought up. "It was only Agatha who was very firm about her foresight!"
"There can only be one solution," Boris concluded.
"I still can't believe that Agatha would make that mistake," Farkas was still doubting everything.
"Oh, she was wrong!" Theo's mother raised. Catherine was teary-eyed and trembling in anger as she noted, "How can Lucius' daughter be our Luna? Her father killed my husband and many of our friends! The pain that Lucius has given us live until this day!"
"It will never work!" Catherine cried. "I hate Gwen as much as I hate her father! Can't you see? We need a better luna!"
While Catherine sobbed, Theo walked over to his mother. He offered comfort, his body tensed from Catherine's heart-aching words.
It took a while, but eventually, Catherine soothed her motions. Thus, Theo took the chance to declare, "We also need to consider the recent rogue attacks that other packs have experienced. In the central part of Northern Alfar, a group of rogues are infiltrating, stealing, and committing crimes. We need a stronger Luna, not Gwen, not someone without a wolf."
"Because of this, I will divorce Gwen," Theo concluded.
"Should we get rid of her?" Gallagher asked.
"I -" Theo gulped. He considered before announcing, "I will exile her. It is the safest solution, given that she is a recognized luna by the council of alphas."
The elders looked at each other before Gallagher approved, "I agree!"
"Let's exile her," Odesa echoed, and the rest followed. Elder Farkas was reluctant, but in the end, he agreed.
"Since everyone is in favor, I will inform the council of alphas of our decision. We will schedule the rejection ceremony as soon as possible. Then, I will be a free man again," Theo declared.
"Ah! Help! Help me!"
"It's so painful! What's going on with me?"
It was midnight when Theo heard loud screams coming from Gwen's room. He groaned in annoyance as he got up from the bed.
He kicked his door open and marched in the direction of the screams, "What the hell is going on? Gwen, why are you screaming?"
He caught two Omegas by the door of Gwen's room. They were panicking after having come from inside.
"Alpha, something is wrong with Luna Gwen," one maid said.
The other maid looked back at Gwen, and then she said, "Alpha, I think Luna Gwen is finally shifting!"
Theo rushed to see Gwen, and he saw her curling on the floor, her body expanding and her eyes glowing. True enough, she was about to make her first shift!
Everyone knew the first shift was the most excruciating. It could also go completely wrong if the human body lost control of its wolf. Thus, Theo dashed towards Gwen and carried her frame. He announced, "I'm taking her out back!"
Every male werewolf came of age at twenty, while she-wolves first shifted at twenty-one. There are exceptions, of course, like those with an alpha blood that could shift earlier. There are also late bloomers, like Gwen.
Gwen was already twenty-five, four years late from her supposed first shift.
Theo ran as fast as he could to reach the backyard. Once there, he rested Gwen on the grass. He instructed, "Try to relax, Gwen. You are shifting for the first time. The pain you are experiencing is completely normal. Take deep breaths and communicate with your inner wolf. Let her out, but never lose yourself in the process."
"Aaah!" Gwen screamed.
She let out a howl under the bright moon. Her hands morphed into claws, her snout elongated, and her body expanded, causing her clothes to tear away.
Before Theo knew it, Gwen was on her fours. Appearing before Theo was a sizeable white werewolf with a light purple glow on its fur.
Initially, Theo was struck with awe as Gwen's wolf bore the unmistakable features of an alpha. He found her wolf's appearance almost magical as it shimmered under the moonlight. However, his amazement was short-lived when he made eye contact with Gwen.
Theo's heart raced. He stilled for seconds as if trapped in a dream. Soon, he said, "Mate."
