~ Gwen ~
All of Gwen's tears have dried. She was curling in bed in the middle of the night, caressing her stomach. She wondered what would become of her and her baby.
"Can we make it out as rouges?" She thought about it. Living away from this heartbreaking place could be better, but being packless posed many risks. Would she and her baby survive?
First, every pack hated rogues. Even she was afraid of rogues. Rogues were always considered unpredictable because they did not adhere to the rules and protections provided by pack life. They can threaten packs due to their independence and potential hostility. Because of this, packs often hunted rogues down.
Second, once lone wolves become rogues, they inevitably turn feral. The time of this transformation would take place varied greatly, depending on the werewolf's determination to remain sane.
Gwen couldn't bear the thought of her baby growing up in such a condition, but what choice did she have? Her husband, Theo, was determined to exile her, and she was powerless to stop it.
"Moon Goddess, I don't understand. What did I ever do to deserve this?" Gwen asked.
Maybe it was better that she had died a year ago together with her father because now, an innocent life was involved.
"My baby," she said, her heartache coming back all over again. "If only I had my wolf, I could protect my pup."
"Maybe I can make it to the human territories, stay sane for as long as I can until I find another pack to accept us," Gwen muttered.
Gwen was thinking deeply about her plans until her eyes landed on the bright moon outside her window. She felt as though it was calling out to her.
She stood up and watched the moon from her window. After a while, she felt goosebumps all over. Her heart was pounding in her chest. She could feel something changing in her, a strange, tingling sensation spreading through her limbs.
"Ouch!" She winced, feeling the sudden discomfort in her arm. "What's happening?"
Her muscles tightened, and her bones hurt as if they were being stretched and reshaped from within. "Ah!"
She fell to her knees, gasping for air and clutching at the floor. She screamed, "Help! Anyone, help me! Ah!"
"Help me, please! I don't know what's going on with me!" Gwen did not know how long she had been screaming. She feared whatever was happening to her would hurt her baby.
Gwen curled on the floor, holding her stomach as the maids opened the door to her room. "It's so painful! What's going on with me?"
"What's wrong with Luna Gwen?" One of the maids asked.
"I don't know!" The other replied. "I think she is shifting! Look at her eyes?"
'Shifting?' Gwen had a lightbulb moment. She didn't think of it sooner because she had nearly accepted how she was wolfless! She thought it was one of her pitiful fates. Moreover, she was so in distress to think thoroughly.
Eventually, Theo turned up. After one maid suggested she was transforming, he carried her into his arms and brought her to the packhouse's backyard.
"Try to relax, Gwen. Take deep breaths and communicate with your inner wolf. Let her out, but never lose yourself in the process," Theo instructed.
Following Theo's encouragement, Gwen gave in completely. Based on her knowledge, her body would protect her baby.
Gwen looked up to the moon and let the moonlight's rays strengthen her.
Soon, Gwen's spine arched painfully, and she let out a low, guttural growl that echoed through the backyard. Her face was contorted, her jaw elongating, and her teeth sharpening into fangs. The pain was excruciating, but somewhere beneath it all was a sense of release, of becoming something powerful and wild.
Gwen's human cries of pain gradually transformed into a wolf's deep, resonant howl. The sound was beautiful and haunting, a primal declaration of her new identity.
Finally, Gwen stood on all fours, a magnificent she-wolf with eyes that still held a glimmer of her human soul.
Gwen took a tentative step in her new paws. Her senses heightened to an unmeasured degree. Every rustle of the leaves and scent the breeze carried was amplified. She looked at the moon and let out another howl of triumph and acceptance.
Finally, she had her wolf!
A tear rolled down her face, knowing now that she could at least protect her pup no matter what happened.
'Thank you, Moon Goddess, for hearing my cries!' She silently prayed to the skies.
Gwen looked down and studied herself. She was amazed that she was a white wolf, glowing in soft purple. There was something magical about the way she glimmered.
Gwen's wolf was beautiful!
She howled to the moon again, expressing her thanks, but later realized she had an audience. Gwen became fully aware of someone watching her.
Theo Erhart.
She locked eyes with her husband, and something more mystical happened!
Gwen was transported into a dream-like state. She could see visions of herself together with Theo.
"What is this? No!" Theo spat, interrupting Gwen's trance.
The vision quickly vanished, and Gwen returned to reality. She stood before Theo as they both said at the same time, "Mate."
Gwen gasped, her eyes rounding!
She also noted the shocked expression on Theo's face.
Gwen said, "We - Theo, we are mates!"
She couldn't believe it! It explained everything! She had always wondered why she felt tingles all over her body when Theo would touch her. Even when their marriage was forced, she fell madly in love with Theo!
Apparently, they were mates. They were destined by the Moon Goddess above!
Agatha's insights were coming true!
"Theo, it's meant to be! Can't you see? We are mates," Gwen happily expressed, still in her wolf form.
"Mates?" Theo retreated his steps, his brows meeting and his face bore a look of doubt. He screamed, "No! I cannot accept this! How could I be mates with you, Gwenneth Darwin?"
"The Moon Goddess has gone mad! Not only are you Lucius' daughter, but you also betrayed me to be with another man!" Theo growled. "Did you forget how my family and I nearly died in your father's hands? Did you forget how Caroline's husband and child died?"
"Did you forget how your father killed my father? I begged Lucius, but he viciously slashed my father's throat in front of me when we had already surrendered!" Theo snapped. With anger burning in his eyes, he voiced, "I, Theo Erhart, Alpha of Port Leon, hereby -"
"No! Theo, no!" Gwen's wolf whimpered on the ground, lowering her head. Even before the rejection could happen, she was already feeling an immense pain in her chest, her body weakening. She said, "I don't know if I can bear it!"
Just the thought of being rejected left her with so much agony that she unknowingly changed back into her human form! She clutched her stomach and begged, "Please, Theo, don't!"
Theo held back his words. His jaws clenched as he said, "I will spare you for tonight, Gwen, until you regain your strength, but the rejection ceremony will happen!"
"Until then, no one should know of this," Theo warned before turning his back on her.
"Why?" Gwen said under her breath. Once more, Gwen's heart shattered into a thousand pieces. Not even the mate bond was strong enough to erase that hate in Theo's heart.
