~ Gwen ~
Gwen was at a loss for words. She was facing Caroline, and for the last minute, they had been silent.
Caroline kept averting Gwen's gaze, but ultimately, she said, "Gwen, I just want you to understand my side -"
"I do, actually." Gwen nodded. "You were grieving. The pain of losing your family had made you... hate me."
Caroline stared at Gwen. Her body stiffened, but tears quickly brimmed in her eyes. Her nose flared while saying, "It was so hard for me to accept that there was no one else to blame for their death."
"I have tried to ease my pain, Gwen. I tried to find another mate, hoping it would bring me some relief, but no. It's just different when you lose your fated mate," Caroline described.
"Many nights, I dreamed of Lucius being alive, and in each of those dreams, I killed him again and again," Caroline said. "Words can't express how much I loathed him. My hatred was so intense that I despised anything tied to him. So yes, I admit it—I resented that I could no longer blame you because I desperately needed someone to hold responsible."
"And I'm sorry for it," Caroline finally said.
She sniffed and revealed, "I have realized I have become the devil myself. I hated Lucius so much for his ruthlessness, yet I was starting to become like him -"
"Not at all, Caroline," Gwen interrupted. "Lucius was another level of viciousness. I would know. He raised me, after all."
"Caroline, I don't want to hate you either," Gwen softly expressed. "So, I'm willing to forgive and forget, especially for Theo's sake and my son."
Immediately, Caroline stared at Gwen in shock, as if she could not believe how she had forgiven her. She asked, "Do—do you mean that?"
"I have thought about it carefully." Gwen looked down and said, "It starts with understanding. I understand you and where you are coming from, even if I was hurt. So, I figured forgiveness is the key. Because if I keep hating you, you'll keep hating me, and I don't want that."
"We are not enemies, and we shouldn't be fighting. Moreover, Ian loves Theo and wants to get to know you and Catherine. I already forgave your mom, so I don't see why I can't extend the same to you," Gwen added with a smile.
Clearly, Caroline did not know how to react. She kept looking around, still in disbelief. Then, she sighed and admitted, "I'm just so shocked. I did not think -"
Caroline wound up crying again. She covered her face as she voiced, "I don't feel like I don't deserve your forgiveness."
It could not be helped. Gwen moved closer to Caroline and embraced her. Caroline hugged back while she sobbed with deep emotions.
Seconds turned into minutes, and ultimately, they pulled away. There was still that awkward silence, but eventually, Caroline said, "Thank you, Gwen. Thank you so much. And I'm sorry about you being taken as a baby. That was another awakening for me too. You were stolen from your real family. I lost my family, but you also lost yours in a way."
"We were just both victims and for all we know, it was Lucius who kidnapped you," Caroline suggested.
"I don't really have proof of that, but Theo is looking into Lucius' past as well," Gwen replied. She waited a little before asking, "So, this means you did not send Raul to kill me?"
Caroline leaned back in fright. She questioned, "What? Raul attacked you? Is that why he was severely wounded?"
"Yes," Gwen replied. "He attacked me under the impression that I could not fight."
"You know how to fight?" Caroline asked back.
Gwen forced a smile and answered, "I have learned after leaving Port Leon. Lucius never allowed me to train. Thinking back, I think he feared I would rebel one day."
"Wait. Wait," Caroline raised her hand and muttered. "If Raul attacked you, then -" With her eyes rounding, she reacted, "Madison?"
"Mom, homeschooling is boring," Ian said while answering his activity book.
Gwen pouted and replied, "Do you wanna go home?"
"No, Mommy!" Ian objected, his eyes narrowing at her. "We can't leave Daddy."
The pup returned to answering his book but did so with a frown.
Gwen was at the packhouse, particularly in her son's room. That day, she had already visited the king and discharged Catherine from the hospital.
At that moment, all her worries drifted back to the warrior, Raul.
Theo had been occupied over the past two days since the attack. Gwen knew Theo was investigating Raul and whoever was connected to him. However, her primary concern was how Raul was starting to regain consciousness and her secrets would eventually be revealed.
"Mommy, when are you going to tell Daddy about your special gift," Ian muttered as if he knew what was on her mind! "I think Daddy should know."
"I - soon, I guess," Gwen replied.
It was bound to happen anyway. Theo was getting curious. In fact, Gwen had caught Theo snooping around the mini-lab. Fortunately, Jacob was very good at removing all traces of her blood after every monk fruit sweetener production.
Fate had probably aligned with her plans because Theo arrived minutes after. He and Ian ran out to the backyard first, and when they returned, Gwen asked for his time.
The father and son were still laughing and talking about their run when Gwen said, "Theo, I have something important to tell you. Can we talk in your office?"
Minutes later, Gwen stood before Theo's office desk, and he was seated in his usual chair. He asked, "Well, what is it? Will you finally declare your love for me and let me mark you?"
Gwen rolled her eyes. She said, "No, it's something more important."
Naturally, his expression darkened. He replied, "What could be more important than us?"
"It's about Raul," Gwen said.
"Trust me, I am looking into it. I have a plan," Theo replied.
"No, that's not it. It's about how I injured Raul," Gwen said. "I have decided today that I would tell you because… I know now I could trust you."
Theo eventually recognized her seriousness, so he leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. He said, "Go on. I'm all ears."
"Remember this?" Gwen pointed to the blade mark on her arm.
"Yes, you haven't told me about your tattoo," Theo said.
"Well, it's not just a tattoo," Gwen explained. "It's something I was destined to carry as part of my pack."
"Your father's pack?" Theo clarified.
"Okay, so maybe I should start from there," Gwen said. "But Theo, what I will tell you is a secret. You cannot tell your warriors. You have to promise me."
Theo wavered. He got up from his seat and stood before her, saying, "If that's what it takes for you to open up to me, Gwen."
"If you tell anyone, it will endanger my life and others like me," Gwen said.
"Gwen, I won't tell a soul, not even my family." He rested his hands on her arms, adding, "And I will protect you with all my life. I won't let anything happen to you."
"Okay." Gwen looked down before saying, "The truth is, in my father's pack, 98% of us have purple eyes."
"98%," Theo echoed.
Gwen nodded, saying, "We are a rare kind of werewolf lineage with special abilities, and our eyes are what sets us apart."
Theo continued to listen attentively, his brows meeting. So, she resumed, "Our abilities vary to some extent, but generally, our kind heals very fast."
"I noticed, and I remember," Theo acknowledged. "Even your brother recovered faster than my warriors. Even Jacob healed faster. "That's special, yes, but why would that put your life in danger? Shouldn't that be an advantage?"
"Yes, well, I'm a bit different." Gwen put her hand on her chest, saying, "I heal fast, and then, I can heal others too."
'Heal others,' Theo mouthed. He fell silent for almost a minute before saying, "That's how you became a miracle doctor?"
She nodded and said, "Yes, and the fact that I can do that puts my life at risk."
Theo frowned. He reacted, "Then why did you put yourself out there? How though? How does it work?"
"It was just in my nature to help others, Theo. I couldn't help it. Year after year, many poisons and different kinds of diseases have surfaced, and they are now affecting our kind," Gwen explained. "I couldn't just stand and watch it happen. I figured this was my purpose and why the Moon Goddess gave me this gift."
"I know it's risky, but that's why I have this," Gwen pointed to her arm. "It's supposed to protect me."
"That?" Theo asked. "How is a tattoo supposed to protect you?"
Gwen took a deep breath and said, "At my will, it comes to life."
