~ Gwen ~
“Your mother suggested it isn’t the fatigue of the fight that made you sleep for two days. It was the blood lost,” Theo revealed.
Yes, that was right. Before joining the battle, she and Jacob drew blood so the wounded could be healed.
“I did not draw above the limit,” Gwen muttered.
“Yes, but combined with your fighting, your body gave in,” Theo whispered. He held her hand and said, “We really should limit, if possible, stop this healing by way of your blood. I don’t want this to be why others want to come after you, Gwen.”
Gwen fluttered her eyes. She took a deep breath and responded, “I know it’s a big responsibility to bear, Theo, but I can’t also help who I am. I’m a doctor, and helping people with their health conditions has become part of me.”
“But the stakes are too high,” Theo pointed out.
“I don’t know, Theo,” Gwen said. She threw her head back and asked, “Can we talk about this some other time? I really want to see Jacob.”
Theo let out a heavy sigh. He said, “He is not in a good state, but he might calm down when he sees you.”
“Where is he?” Gwen asked.
“He is still in the bunker,” Theo answered.
“What? Why?” Gwen inquired.
“It was your brother’s idea,” Theo replied. “He is safer there, where he can’t hurt himself.”
Gwen shook her head. Then, she remembered someone. She asked, “The king, Theo? King Arthur.”
“He is safe,” Theo replied. “He is in the room next to yours. He had visited you every day.”
“Okay. I’ll see the king first, and then, I’ll see Jacob,” Gwen replied.
Doctor Hanson evaluated Gwen in the next hour. After the assessment, Gwen had tea with the king. She had advised him to stay in Port Leon longer, especially since their treatment was, yet again, interrupted by a day.
Thankfully, King Arthur agreed. He said, “I’d rather keep arguing with my wife than die. She can continue to get mad at me for staying here, but in the event, she will still love me.”
Gwen did not have the heart to confront the king about Hazel’s genuineness. She just did not have the energy. Moreover, the suspects have broadened. It used to be only the queen, but as of that day, this Alpha Madlock had come into the picture, and then her aunt, Janice.
She figured that one day, everything would make sense. For now, she badly needed to see Jacob.
Gwen said goodbye to the king. After a few minutes on the road, she and Theo reached the underground shelter. From the outside, Gwen observed two other warriors on guard. While they walked into the bunker, Theo updated Gwen, “Caroline is also in the hospital, but she is better now. Madison is still unconscious. Her aunt and her parents asked what had happened to her, and I told them the truth.”
“What truth did you tell them?” Gwen asked.
“That she attacked you and Caroline and she intended to kill you. Naturally, her parents and aunt questioned the truth, but Caroline backed my story, as she should,” Theo added. “Raul is already awake, and he’s healing faster now.”
“He tried to paint you as a cursed she-wolf or an abomination. I commanded him never to speak ill of you again, but don’t worry, Gwen, his report about your blade won’t affect your place in this pack.” Theo turned to her, declaring, “The people of Port Leon know you are a hero. If it were not for your help and that of your family, many more of my men would have died.”
Gwen smiled and asked, “Really? They think that way?”
“Very much,” Theo assured her. “I’ll tell you more about Raul after your talk with Jacob.”
Gesturing to the nearest door, Theo said, “For now, Jacob needs you.”
“And you are not jealous of me going in there?” Gwen asked, surprised.
Theo clearly hesitated. He gasped and revealed, “He tried to kill himself, Gwen. So, I’ll make an exception for today and two or three days. I’ll wait for you outside.”
Gwen chuckled. She entered the room carefully. She easily spotted her brother, Baron. He was sitting on the sofa, eyeing Jacob as he lay on a bed.
Very quickly, Jacob rose from his rest. He smelled the air profusely as if his eyes couldn’t see, and he used his nose to identify her. “Is it really you, Gwen?”
Maybe he could not see because Jacob’s eyes were too puffed. Moreover, the bunker’s lights were dimmed.
“Good to see you, Gwen,” Baron acknowledged her arrival. He embraced Gwen and motioned for Jacob, saying, “Talk to him. I’ll give you some room.”
Gwen first nodded at Baron. She returned her attention to her friend, saying, “It’s me, Jacob. How are you?”
“Gwen,” Jacob called. He lazily walked toward her and held her tight. He said, “I killed her, Gwen. I killed my mate! I feel like I’m dying.”
Her friend, who was once unexpressive, suddenly broke down in tears. His body was tense as he struggled to reveal, “I - I finally understand how you feel. The pain of losing your mate is excruciating; much worse, she died in my hands.”
“I did not notice her, Gwen,” Jacob explained himself. He kept taking deep breaths as if his chest was completely heavy. “At that time when I saw her, everyone had blood stains on them, and she was no exception. I could not smell her as my mate. Then, I was exhausted, and I was fucking mad at the enemies. When I saw her attack Theo’s warrior, I just had to step in!”
“I did not mean to kill her, Gwen. I was just tired and angry!” Jacob added. “I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if I can survive this. I’ve been living in guilt for the past two days. I had barely slept -”
“Shh. No one wanted this.” Gwen caressed Jacob’s back. She said, “Theo told me everything. She was part of the enemy, right? So, you are not to blame for her death. It was an accident. Moreover, you wanted to save someone’s life.”
“Maybe there is a reason for everything,” Gwen proposed. “Maybe this was the Moon Goddess’ plan. Maybe your happiness will be with your second chance mate.”
“I don’t know if I can, Gwen,” Jacob said under his breath. “It’s rare enough to find your fated mate.”
Gwen pulled away and grabbed Jacob’s hands. She said, “Believe me. You must believe in second chances, and let’s pray for it.”
