                    ~ Gwen ~
“Do you feel much better?” Gwen asked Jacob while exiting the hospital ward.
With a faint smile, Jacob answered, “Better lately. Thank you, Gwen.”
There were still injured warriors who required medical attention. With Jacob around, Gwen had her usual right-hand help again. Of course, since Gwen’s parents still chose to linger in Port Leon, Juliet also offered her services.
While Jacob accompanied Gwen to have tea with the severely injured warriors, Juliet assisted other doctors in preparing medications and sometimes evaluating the patient’s condition.
The hospital became understaffed after Ironwood Pack's attack, which was understandable. Too many pack members were impaired, some even coming from allied packs who served as Port Leon's backup.
Thankfully, the pack’s treatment of Gwen and her parents had dramatically improved. Everyone was always smiling and greeting Gwen and her family politely. Many of them expressed their gratitude for helping to protect the borders.
It had become known that Gwen’s family offered a more stable defense than Alpha Theo’s men because of their immunity to the poison from the recent threat. Aside from that, it was Juliet’s knowledge, particularly her wisdom about the poison, that made an antidote quickly become available.
Of course, word got out that Madison had something to do with Agatha Sanger’s death. Since then, the elders have no longer sympathized with Madison, granting Gwen a hundred percent support as Theo's better half.
Jacob and Gwen arrived in Madison’s hospital room, which was heavily guarded in case she woke up. Jacob asked, “Are we going to treat her?”
“We have to,” Gwen responded. “Theo wants her to receive full punishment in the end. Once Madison fully recovers, she will be locked up in prison for the rest of her life. Her parents have also been questioned.”
Gwen leaned closer to Jacob and revealed, “When Raul awoke from his coma, he not only admitted to sleeping with Madison, he also revealed having overheard Madison and her parents talk about Agatha’s death.”
Jacob frowned and asked, “So you think Madison’s family was involved in Agatha’s death?”
“I wouldn’t be surprised, considering how they had supported her madness until now,” Gwen said before opening Madison’s hospital room.
Madison lost a lot of blood because Gwen wounded her chest during their fight. A werewolf’s natural healing ability was insufficient to bring her back to consciousness. So, for the past two days, Gwen had given Madison a drop of her blood so that the latter could face judgment sooner.
Gwen went in and out of Madison’s hospital room in under five minutes. When she and Jacob finished their hospital visit, they met with Juliet. They dropped by the pack’s training grounds, where George and Baron trained with Ian. After that, they all parted ways. Gwen’s family proceeded to the hotel while she, Jacob, and Ian drove back to the packhouse.
Theo greeted them at the door, his face full of jealousy as he growled at Jacob. He still could not get over the fact that Gwen and Jacob had been spending time together.
“Theo, please,” Gwen scolded. “Jacob helped me at the hospital.”
“Why is Daddy mad?” Ian asked.
“It’s nothing, Honey,” Gwen said while guiding Ian out of the car.
“You arrived just in time,” Theo said in a deep voice. “Caroline just arrived. Brody and the rest of my Gammas are coming to discuss what my sister discovered in Alpha Madlock’s pack.”
“I want to join,” Gwen expressed. “I’m curious to know how they got a hold of the poison from an extinct plant.”
“Well, coincidentally, we have a partial answer to that,” Theo said. He glanced at Ian and leveled with him. He hugged his pup and asked, “How was your training, Ian?”
“I did great, Dad! I kicked ass!” Ian claimed.
Theo chuckled at his son’s response. Then, he suggested, “Why don’t you shower and rest before we have dinner? Daddy and Mommy will have a meeting with the warriors first.”
“Okay, Daddy,” Ian exclaimed before rushing inside the packhouse.
“Can I join?” Jacob asked. “You said Caroline would have information about my mate.”
“Ah.” Theo wavered. “I forgot about that. Yes, she should have information about your mate too.”
“I’ll make sure that Ian gets his bath first, Theo, and we will join you in your office,” Gwen said before rushing after their son. As for Jacob, he also went to his room to get changed.
Half an hour later, Gwen entered Theo’s office and saw that everyone was already around. Brody, Rollin, Dunken, and four other gammas. Caroline greeted Gwen with a smile. She said, “Gwen! It’s nice to see you again!”
Caroline and Gwen shared an embrace. It was their very first embrace, and Gwen thought it felt so great that she almost cried. When they pulled away, Gwen said, “I’m glad you came back safe.”
“Yes, me too.” Caroline sat back in her chair and revealed, “Honestly, Alpha Madlock’s pack is tightly secured as well. I was worried they would discover me, but the potion we used to hide our scents was very effective. Plus, I cut and dyed my hair, so it helped make me look very different.”
Gwen smiled, studying Caroline. She had the same dark brown hair as Theo, but now it was red. Instead of her long and wavy hair, she had a pixie cut, which Gwen thought suited Caroline well.
“Over here, Gwen,” Theo urged her to sit beside him. He had already prepared a chair for Gwen.
After Gwen settled down, Theo said, “We can start.”
“I want to know about the poison first,” Gwen said, and Caroline nodded.
“They have a warehouse back in the Ironwood Pack. I had tricked one of the guards to let me in, making him believe I wanted to have sex with him. The guy thought with his dick,” Caroline shared while rolling her eyes. She presented photos of the place, describing, “It had medical apparatuses inside. I guess they are mixing the poisons. Then, on one side, different poisons were in stock.”
“The warrior I spoke to said the poisons all came from the Crimson Moon Labs, an underground laboratory in Borealis.” Caroline distributed more pictures and pointed out important details. “See the bottles? It has its own label. They said the same laboratory planned to release more poisons and create an antidote.”
“So, they want to make money out of the poisons?” Gwen asked.
“Yes, the warrior said something about a universal antidote. One antidote that would cure all kinds of illnesses and diseases acquired from poisons. They were planning to sell it for a million dollars per a hundred ML or 500 ounces of gold,” Caroline added.
"Woah." Dunken reacted.
“What?” Gwen reacted. “That is ridiculous! I don’t even charge that much!”
“I guess they were counting on people getting desperate to survive,” Theo said angrily. He hissed and suggested, “For all we know, they had been responsible for the many illnesses that had surfaced among the werewolf community.”
“We, werewolves, used to be the supreme kind, but in recent years, more and more kinds of poisons and diseases have affected our strength,” he added.
"If we think about it, many people from Borealis had become sick," Rollin said through gritted teeth. "They are making the residents in Borealis their subjects!"
“We have to find this underground laboratory. We have to put a word out there!” Caroline raised. “Sooner or later, these poisons will affect every pack - every country, and we will be forced to bow down to this underground laboratory! We can't make that happen!"
“Alpha Theo? Gwen?” A knock on the door interrupted their discussion. It was Jacob, “Can I join you?”
“Come in, Jacob,” Theo ordered.
When Jacob walked in. He apologized, saying, “I’m sorry for arriving late. I received a call from home, and I had to -”
Suddenly, everyone noticed Jacob standing in his place, his eyes rounding and fixed on Caroline.
Caroline also stilled. She gasped and also rose from her seat, her mouth hanging open, and her chest heaved dramatically.
From the evident shock, their expression changed to something akin to familiarity, and then, passion?
Jacob and Caroline were completely lost in the moment. Everyone around them watched, confused as to why nothing could pull their eyes away from each other.
'Is this right?' Gwen mused.
The sight gave Gwen the chills, and unexpectedly, both Caroline and Jacob said at the same time, “Mate.”
“Fuck, no way,” Theo was the first to react.
Gwen, on the other hand, nodded. She said, “Yes, way.”
