"It's time," Theo announced. "Get yourself ready."
Days came and went, and the day of the rejection ceremony ultimately arrived.
In the past few days, Theo had ordered the maids to bring food and supplements to help Gwen recover from her first shift. It was meant to prepare her for another painful process: the rejection.
Gwen had grown tired of begging Theo and finally accepted that things would never work out between them.
Theo will forever hate her.
What made it worse was how she had miraculously become pregnant when Theo was infertile.
Gwen knew something might have gone wrong in one of the tests, but Theo was uninterested in proving her theory.
For a second, Gwen glanced at Theo. Her heart skipped a beat. The power of the mate bond was so strong that she almost cried. However, she averted his gaze and looked out the window. She dryly answered, "I'm ready."
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Theo look around her room. He asked, "You did not pack your clothes."
"I have nothing here that I truly own," Gwen said. "If you don't mind, I'll wear these clothes."
Gwen was wearing denim jeans, a blouse, and a leather jacket. She wore rubber shoes, knowing she would go on a long walk, maybe even run for her life.
"Don't be ridiculous," Theo said in a cold voice. He marched inside and pulled out a duffle bag from the closet. He threw it on the bed and ordered, "I had given you this bag, and you must pack your clothes now!"
"You have a baby to protect, so you need them," Theo reminded her. "This is just a divorce, and you are lucky to be leaving the pack alive after your betrayal."
"Gwen, you can still live your life!" Theo reminded.
"As a rogue? Continuously running for my life?" Gwen responded. Her face bore no emotions. Still, she slowly walked towards the closet and chose amongst the trousers and blouses she had. She took out two very warm jackets and stuffed them inside.
For seconds, Gwen stared at the bag, imagining her life on the run after this. She zipped the bag and asked, "Don't you feel anything toward me? Anything at all?"
She glanced at him and noticed how he swallowed air down his throat. Theo shut his eyes and looked away, saying, "You quickly forgot your sins, Gwen. It will never work."
Gwen took a deep breath, threw the duffle bag over her shoulder, and said, "Let's go."
The rejection ceremony was held at the open community grounds in Port Leon. It was the biggest venue, often used for significant pack announcements and major gatherings.
It was rare for Theo and Gwen to share a car when going to a particular event, but how ironic that they did so on the day of their official divorce.
Gwen could feel the tension between her and Theo. They were silent, but she sensed his occasional gaze. On the other hand, she remained to look out the window, internally planning her life.
"We have arrived," Brody, the beta, said.
"Go ahead and announce our arrival," Theo ordered his beta. "There is something I need to discuss with Gwen for the last time."
Gwen turned to Theo, bemused. When she locked eyes with him, he said, "After the rejection, some of my men will guide you to the highway where you can make it on your own safely. Don't ever lose your bag."
She looked away, taking deep breaths. For a fleeting moment, she thought Theo would change his mind, but evidently not.
When Gwen exited the car, she saw how crowded it was. Pack members were carrying balloons, trumpets, and party poppers! Clearly, they were excited to see her go.
Madison, for one, had a big smirk on her face. She stood behind the elders, gaping at Gwen.
"Boo!" Some individuals mocked Gwen as she marched in.
To her surprise, Theo scolded his people, saying, "Respect the ceremony! As your alpha, I command you to keep quiet!"
Gwen never anticipated that from Theo. He had never defended her before, and although his actions weren't explicitly intended to protect her, they did so nonetheless.
Before the elders and the pack members, Theo and Gwen stood in the middle, facing each other.
Catherine came forward and announced to the pack, "It is no secret to everyone how my son was only forced into this marriage. Thus, this rejection ceremony was bound to happen, regardless of Agatha's wisdom."
"However, what made us move forward to this ceremony was Gwen's betrayal!" Catherine added. "Her actions do not reflect that of a true luna! She got herself pregnant by another man, hoping to be on Theo's side!"
Since Theo had already commanded the pack members to keep their comments to themselves, all Gwen could hear were murmurs. She dared not look around because she knew they ridiculed her in other ways.
"Because of this, we, the elders, have agreed with Theo to exile Gwen from our pack and all our territories!" Catherine announced. "This will follow after the rejection!"
Yes, there was no shaming, no one screaming and calling Gwen names, but the temperature around her said it all. The cold air brushed against her skin, and she felt everyone's stares stabbing through her small frame.
"Alpha Theo, you may begin," Catherine commanded before stepping back.
"I, Alpha -" Theo paused and called, "Look at me, Gwen."
Gwen lazily stared into Theo's eyes and carefully studied the movements of his lips. She rested her hands on her stomach, whispering, "We can handle this baby. We can do this without your father."
The words played in slow motion as her mate said, "I, Alpha Theo Erhart of Port Leon, reject you, Gwenneth Darwin, as my mate and my luna!"
A gasp escaped Gwen's lips, and tears filled her eyes. She trembled but stayed on her feet, attempting to conceal how she was breaking inside.
The rejection was not yet complete, however, it was already crushing her very soul.
"It's your turn, Gwen," Theo reminded while his body tensed.
A rejection between fated mates had to be given by both parties. Otherwise, the mate bond will continue to remain. This was why Theo asked for her side of the rejection.
"Gwen?" Theo called again.
Eventually, after collecting herself, Gwen looked at Theo and said, "I, Gwenneth Darwin, hereby -"
"Alpha, we are under attack!" Suddenly, one of the warriors screamed. Everyone's heads snapped in the voice's direction. Even Gwen turned to find the source of the voice.
She saw two warriors in their wolf forms running and five werewolves with unfamiliar scents chasing after them.
"Rogues!" Theo screamed. He was putting his hand on his ear, suggesting he was receiving multiple mindlinks. He looked up to his warriors and added, "Over fifty rogues on the east border and twenty rogues to the north!"
"Spread and protect the pack!" Theo ordered. Before he left to back up his warriors, Theo leaned into Gwen and growled, "Stay here!"
With everyone getting riled up and ready to fight, Gwen simply stood there, wondering what to do. Can she leave now? But what about the rejection?
Before she knew it, she felt a hand pull her arm. She looked up and saw Dr. Marcus Hanson, her senior at the hospital. He said, "Luna Gwen, let me take you to safety."
"Safety?" Gwen considered before deciding, "How about taking me out of this pack?"
"Okay, I'll help you," the doctor offered.
Gwen nodded. She looked around, found her bag, slung it across her body, and followed the doctor's lead.
The rogues penetrated the east and the north, so Dr. Hanson sped to the western borders, where the ports were. The doctor suggested, "You can hop on one of the ships that will take you to the human territories."
It was a tiring run. Gwen and the doctors also had to ride a motorbike to reach the ports faster. Upon reaching the ports, Dr. Hanson said while pointing at one cargo vessel, "Over there, on that ship!"
Gwen ran in the boat's direction, but two unknown werewolves caught her even before reaching the vessel. Their scents were utterly foreign to Gwen.
"Ahh! Doctor, help!" Gwen called. "Rogues!"
However, to her surprise, the doctor turned to her with a look of regret. He said, "I'm sorry, Gwen, but they threatened my family."
"We got the luna now," one rogue declared. "Alpha Theo will surely pay handsomely."
The rogue laughed before his companions rejoiced with him. Soon, many other rogues surfaced from hiding, leaving Gwen to fear for her life.
