                    ~ Jacob ~
Jacob had always doubted the mate bond, especially Gwen’s bond with Theo, but now, having found a mate twice, he fully understood why Gwen could not simply turn away from Theo.
It felt great!
He did not like Caroline before. He appreciated how she had changed his treatment of Gwen. Still, he never expected to be so suddenly attracted to her! All it took was for the Moon Goddess to alter their fates.
“What are you thinking?” Caroline asked him.
They were still in Caroline’s bed, their limbs intertwined after having been intimate for the first time.
A chuckle left Jacob’s lips. He looked up at the ceiling and rested his head on his arm. He replied, “I just can’t believe it.”
Jacob turned to her and admitted, “I’m glad this happened after you had decided to accept Gwen and Theo’s relationship. Otherwise, it would have been complicated for us -”
“I know,” Caroline agreed. “I’m glad too. What happened between us also reminded me that the mate bond is strong. It is no wonder Theo could not get over Gwen.”
Yet again, Jacob laughed. He admitted, “Very strong indeed.”
Jacob and Caroline stared at each other for the next few seconds, then kissed again. Like earlier, electricity ran through his body, jerking his manhood awake. He knew he was bound to ask for another round of love-making, but before that, Caroline’s gaze landed on his arm, particularly his blade marks.
“I wasn’t with you at the border when you fought with our warriors.” She glanced back at him, saying, “I wasn’t able to see, but I heard you could draw your weapon from your arm?”
She lightly touched his arm as he asked, “Can you show me?”
Unlike Gwen, Jacob had multiple marks on both his arms because he had not one but six hand-held blades. Each could fit the palm of his hands, but their edges, made of moonstone, were sharp and could easily cut through a werewolf’s flesh.
Jacob raised his arm toward a section of the wall and thrust his hand forward with a sudden burst of power. One of the blades in his arm shot across the room, surrounded by a faint purple glow, and embedded itself into the wall.
Caroline gasped. Her eyes widened as she sat up abruptly, her mouth rounding. “Wow.”
She turned to him and asked, “Do it again!”
Jacob eagerly showed her his unique ability. Their weapons were no longer a secret to Port Leon.
“That is just amazing!” Caroline said with gleaming eyes. Then, as soon as Jacob willed back his weapons, the marks returned to his arms. She gasped again. “Oh, my goddess! It’s a beautiful gift!”
“Why are you gifted that way, and no one knows about it?” Caroline asked.
“The curiosity of people can do us harm. Others may want to covet our gifts, so we have chosen to stay quiet. I certainly hope that the truth about our gifts will remain in Port Leon and that your people keep it a secret,” Jacob said.
Jacob knew that Theo had already ordered his pack members to keep their secrets. Theo commanded it to the entire pack through mindlink. Still, there was no telling if anyone was strong enough to break through Theo’s alpha command.
“We will do our best, Jacob,” Caroline said, leaning back into his arms. But a question, though: Can anyone take your powers?”
Shaking his head, he replied, “No. Whatever we have been given is destined, and I can only assume it is the Moon Goddess’ choice who gets the weapon or not.”
“I think we have been blessed with these abilities to protect pack members who are extra gifted, like Gwen,” Jacob added. “It’s like what Theo said, Gwen’s gift is dangerous if it’s known to all.”
“It’s a great gift, but if in the hands of evil, it’s dangerous,” Caroline acknowledged. “Dangerous in a way that others might abuse it.”
Jacob nodded again. “Yes.”
“I understand, Jacob,” Caroline said as he snuggled closely to him, her arm wrapping around his chest. Then, she chuckled and said, “I think it’s cool for my mate to have a secret weapon.”
Caroline and Jacob continued to savor in each other’s hold until a loud banging on the door interrupted their special moment. Caroline’s mother was asking about the man she was sleeping with!
“Oh, no,” Caroline grumbled.
“Open the door, Caroline. Let me see who it is!” Catherine demanded.
Panic set in, even for Jacob. They frantically put on their clothes, and Caroline asked, “Wait, Mom! Wait! Give us a minute!”
When Caroline finally opened the door, Catherine walked in. Her eyes rounded in shock upon seeing Jacob. She asked, “What the hell is going on? Jacob?”
Half an hour later, they sat before the dining table, explaining the situation to Caroline’s mother.
“You and Jacob are second-chance mates?” Catherine echoed. It was the fifth time that she asked.
Jacob had to lower his pride. He bowed before Catherine and begged, “I hope you will accept me, Mrs. Erhart.”
At first, Catherine stood up and walked around in silence. Then, she asked, “Does Theo know?”
“Yes,” both Jacob and Caroline said at the same time.
“Does Gwen know?” Catherine asked again.
“Yes,” Jacob and Caroline replied.
“Are you sure you both are okay with this?” Catherine clarified.
Jacob and Caroline looked at each other. Caroline answered first, saying, “I’m going with how I’m feeling right now, Mom, and I just feel so relieved and happy. I think I should cherish this second chance.”
“It’s the same for me, Mrs. Erhart,” Jacob gave his two cents. “It was just hours ago when I still could not understand why I was given an enemy for a fated mate, and then, suddenly, Caroline turns out to be my second chance mate.”
“I think this may be the fate that the Moon Goddess has intended for me,” Jacob claimed. He looked down and then back to Catherine, adding with a smile, “And I guess it’s heaven’s way of saying I should continue to look over Gwen and Ian.”
Silence stretched for almost a minute before Catherine suddenly burst into tears, her hands covering her face, her shoulders shaking with the heaviness of her sobs. She said, “I’m glad the Moon Goddess had finally granted my wish.”
Catherine looked up to Caroline, revealing, “I have prayed time and time again that she would give you another mate, relieve your pain, and make you forget about the past so we can finally be happy and happy for Theo too.”
“Oh, Mom.” Caroline stood up and embraced Catherine. She also cried with her mother and said, “Thank you. Thank you for praying for me all this time.”
It took Catherine and Caroline a while to soothe their sentiments. The way they comforted each other nearly brought tears to Jacob’s eyes. After a while, Catherine asked, “Well, since Jacob will be my son-in-law, it’s only fair that I should get to know him.”
“Tell me more about you and your family,” Catherine asked.
Jacob took a deep breath and wavered, but soon, he responded, “I am an orphan. Alpha George and Luna Juliet raised me. My parents died in a massacre that nearly killed everyone in our pack. I don’t have much to brag about, but the one thing I can promise you is that I will be loyal, just like how I had been faithful to Gwen, Baron, Ian, and their entire family.”
Caroline and Catherine stared at each other. They smiled before Catherine said, “Well, that’s enough to convince me you will treat my daughter well.”
~ Theo ~
It was after midnight.
Theo narrowed his eyes as he stared out the window. He growled, “Jacob howls like a puppy!”
“Stop it! Stop.” Gwen scolded. “Get back to bed.”
Of course, Theo knew what those howling meant. He was a man, after all, an alpha werewolf at that. He shook his head as he diverted his attention to his mate, asking, “I swear, Gwen, if Caroline gets a mark on her neck tomorrow, I won’t accept it. You have to bear my mark now!”
Gwen chuckled. Her face burned before she replied, “I thought about it, and I… I agree.”
In an instant, Theo’s eyes blazed with intensity, and he let out the loudest howl.
