There had to be over a hundred wolves at the trial; it was in the yards of the palace. Almost everybody was in their wolf forms except for the king and queen. I had never seen so many wolves in one setting before; even at the slave farm, they didn’t hold this many of us.
I couldn’t stop thinking about what Marlon had said to me, that he wanted Kamala and me to run at the first sight of danger. He said it was to protect us but there was something inside of me that didn’t want me to run. My wolf wanted to stay and fight alongside my mate, but he was persistent that I left for our safety.
The king had vowed to kill us regardless of if we won the trial or not; he didn’t want dirtballs to have this much control over his noblemen. It seemed that both Kamala and I had control over noblemen. I glanced over at Bob who stood on the other side of Kamala.
For a while, I insisted that they stayed apart. I wasn’t sure what Bob’s motives were when it came to Kamala. I knew him to be a flirt and to use women. When I first arrived on the farm he tried to have his way with me. But over time, he’s proved himself worthy of a second chance. He’s saved my life on numerous occasions, and I couldn’t be angry with him for that.
It was wrong of me to try and keep them apart because I know, firsthand, how strong the mate bond is. If what they have is really like what Marlon and I have, there’s no keeping them apart. Though, I don’t think Kamala knows exactly what they have.
It wasn’t something I was going to question her on right now though. I looked over at Marlon who stood in front of the crowd with Alex standing beside him. Marlon kept his face expressionless; he wasn’t going to show anyone how much fear he had inside, especially not me.
I admired him for his strength; I just hope it was enough to win this trial.
As the sun set even more and the moon rose; I started seeing more of the king’s men; they seemed to be gathering one by one and they looked tense.
I was starting to get a bad feeling. Something was going to happen.
“Who wants to start?” The king asked them, staring down from his pedestal.
Alex took in a deep breath and stepped forwards toward the crowd of wolves; everyone howled to the moon, including both Alex and Marlon, paying their respects to the moon goddess Nyx. Everyone except for Kamala that is.
She looked uneasy; I couldn’t blame her. Nyx was the one who told her of this power that she had and told her that she needed to use it. That very power was what almost killed her.
“My father is not fit to continue being the estate. Look at what he’s already done,” Alex said, gesturing for the crowd. “He freed the slaves from the farm and the homes of nobles and nearly destroyed the kingdom. Many of us have died because of him. He mated and had a child with a dirtball. He clearly isn’t right in the head.”
Alex paused as he stared at Marlon.
“You are not fit to run any kind of kingdom. You’ve done so much damage as is father. You have to admit that, if not to the kingdom, then to yourself. It isn’t right what you are doing. Harvesting a slave for that many months? Abandoning the kingdom when they needed you the most…”
“I didn’t abandon anybody,” Marlon barked; fury flashing through his eyes. “You imprisoned me in a castle.”
“Do you hear yourself? You think I’m capable of imprisoning you?” Alex nearly laughed.
“I don’t know how you managed to do it; you used some kind of black magic,” Marlon argued.
“Black magic?” Alex laughed. “How would I have gotten black magic, father? You aren’t making any sense.”
“You know what you are doing. This is all part of your plan,” Marlon hissed.
“You don’t get it, do you? There is no plan against you, father. You used to be the most feared man in all the kingdoms. You’re giving that all away for her…” Alex hissed, gesturing for me.
I tensed as all eyes turned to me; I felt the heat rising into my cheeks. I wanted to punch Alex in the face or tear his throat out.
“What is it we have against the dark-furred wolves?!” Marlon asked loudly; his voice booming through the yards.
“They are dirty, uninteresting, and uneducated, just as you’ve always said!” Alex growled.
“I was wrong,” Marlon shot back.
“What do you mean you were wrong?” The king ordered, making Marlon jump like he forgot he was there.
“Deonna isn’t dirty or uninteresting, or uneducated,” Marlon tried to argue back.
“I can vouch for that, your majesties,” Bob said, stepping forward, surprising us all. “When she first arrived on our property, I found out she’s been educated in the past and can speak Latin. I used her to cheat in my studies.”
My eyes widened at Bob’s confession. I couldn’t believe he had just said that to the king and queen; telling from Marlon’s reaction, he too couldn’t believe it.
“Is that so?” The king said, eyeing me carefully.
“She’s smart,” Bob continued. “Smarter than most of us. Including my brother,” Bob said, shooting a look at Alex. “My father speaks the truth. Alex set this entire thing up. It isn’t fair to my father to remove him from the estate.”
“Enough!” The king roared. “I will not have this speak in my kingdom. You’ve said your piece with one another and I will not allow another word to be spoken on the matter. Marlon is removed from the estate and imprisoned for harvesting slaves and keeping them as lovers. The slaves will be put to death and this trial is officially dismissed.”
“Darling…” the queen said, placing a hand on her husband’s arm. “We should listen to….” She tried to say, but he shot a hand up to silence her; she flinched as it came close to her face.
“We will not discuss matters anymore,” the king ordered.
He turned to his arm that’s been standing off in the distance.
“Cease them,” he ordered.
Marlon was right. This has been a setup. He wasn’t trying to listen to Marlon’s part of the story at all. This wasn’t an actual trial. He was planning on taking us regardless; he was going to kill us and we fell right into his trap. I couldn’t help but wonder if Alex knew of this deceit as well; was this part of his plan the entire time?
I took a step backward; I met Marlon’s eyes as the army neared. The parts of the kingdom that were on our side were ready to fight. But I feared they weren’t going to be strong enough to fight the king’s army.
I knew from the look Marlon was giving me that he wanted me to run. This was the moment he was waiting for; did he know this was going to happen?
I turned to Kamala and Bob who were staring at the army with dismay; confused as to what was happening.
“We have to go,” I told Kamala.
She snapped a look at me and her eyebrows rose.
“What?” She asked.
“He wants us to go, we need to go,” I told her.
She glanced a look at Bob; he gave her a head nod.
“She’s right,” Bob told her. “Run.”
Without a single look at the army, we both took off. I could hear the army chasing after us, however, the kingdom was blocking their view of us. They were working together to protect us as we kept running. I knew as soon as we got to the forest, we would be able to disappear and get out of there. But I couldn’t help but wonder if Marlon and Bob were okay.
I couldn’t think about that right now though.
I had to get to my son. We had to get to safety.
