"I'm home!" said Gulf, the only child in the family, as he entered the house, removing his shoes. His mother, still busy preparing food in the kitchen, responded, "Gulf, is everything settled?"
"Yes, Mae, the documents are settled. Now I just need to start packing my clothes and everything."
As usual, Gulf went straight to the kitchen, where his mother was preparing food for the family. He leaned in to sniff her cheek in a loving greeting, as any son would.
Ampha smiled at her son's antics and couldn't help but mutter, "Cheeky boy," as she continued stirring the pot.
Gulf then walked over to the refrigerator, took out a can of Coke, opened it, and gulped it down to the last drop like an expert. He then sneaked a bite of his favourite pad kra pao, unnoticed by his mother but caught by his stepfather, whom he loved dearly like his own father.
Thanayong Traipipattanapong, Gulf Kanawut Traipipattanapong's stepfather, was a businessman who had coincidentally met Ampha Phoosit Traipipattanapong during a business trip to Koh Phangan. They clicked immediately, as if long-lost souls had reunited. After three years of getting to know each other and sharing their pasts and secrets, they got married, with Gulf being 17 years old at the time. It had been eight years since they had been a family.
Gulf's biological father passed away when Gulf was seven, due to a heart attack, leaving him and his mother, who worked as a nurse in Koh Phangan, making her his greatest supporter and anchor.
The trio enjoyed a lively dinner, as they always did, for what would be the last time in that household before moving to Bangkok due to Thanayong's business and Gulf's education. Like a dedicated, loving father, Thanayong wanted the best for his son, which is why they left Koh Phangan.
After dinner, Gulf went up to his room and quickly packed what he needed. A few hours later, after packing all his belongings, he showered before getting ready for bed, not before browsing his social media. He turned to look at the digital clock on his bedside, which read 3 a.m., and decided to call it a night. He needed to wake up early to bid farewell and spend time with his friends before leaving Koh Phangan.
The following day dawned bright, a perfect day to travel, and that's exactly what the Traipipattanapongs were doing as they settled into their seats, leaving Koh Phangan behind. Like many on the aeroplane, Gulf snoozed for most of the flight, but his slumber was interrupted when his mother gently shook him awake.
"Baby boy, wake up, na."
"We're here. Look outside."
"Mae, let me sleep for five more minutes."
"Gulf, we're almost landing, my son," said Gulf's stepfather.
Gulf opened his eyes lazily and glanced outside the aircraft window. The first thing he noticed was the lights illuminating the ground, filling him with excitement, but he also felt sick and tired of everything.
He hadn't gotten much sleep as he had been preparing all the documents for his transfer to a new university and packing, which he obviously disliked; it had drained him, and all he wanted was to have a power nap.
It was dark outside as they landed. The flight took three hours from Koh Phangan to Bangkok, and Gulf was thoroughly done with travelling.
As they exited the airport, Gulf, Ampha, and Thanayong were greeted by Thanayong's men, who had waited for their arrival and quickly assisted with their bags.
Thanayong sat in the front passenger seat while Ampha sat behind the driver, and Gulf sat beside her, gazing out of the window at the traffic and street lights.
With an ambience perfect for falling back asleep, Gulf leaned back against the headrest, closed his eyes, and began to drift off. Just as he was about to enter dreamland, his father, Thanayong, suddenly asked,
"Do you guys want to eat anything? We can get drive-thru food."
"I'm good, honey."
"How about you, Gulf? Hungry?"
*Silence*
"Gulf, my boy, are you hungry?"
Snapped back to reality, Gulf tried hard to keep his cool as he could clearly hear his father's suppressed smile through his voice, purposefully trying to annoy him.
"I'm fine, Pho. Not hungry, since I stuffed myself before the flight."
"Okay then, we'll head straight to the house."
Thanayong couldn't bring himself to tease his son any further and fell quiet as he observed Gulf through the sunglasses that had a small mirror attached, still with his eyes closed, trying to fall asleep.
After that brief exchange, Gulf turned his head slightly towards the window, keeping his eyes shut as he imagined his birthplace. He began to regret leaving Koh Phangan and missed his friends, along with the professors who felt like family.
After dinner, Gulf went up to his room and quickly packed what he needed. A few hours after gathering his belongings, he showered and prepared for bed, but not before browsing his social media. He turned to glance at the digital clock on his bedside table, which read 3 AM, and decided to call it a night. He needed to wake up early to say his goodbyes and hang out with his friends before leaving Koh Phangan.
The next day was bright, a perfect day to move around without hindrance, which is exactly what the Traipipattanapongs were doing as they settled into their seats, leaving Koh Phangan behind. Like many of the other passengers on the aeroplane, Gulf dozed throughout the flight, but his sleep was cut short when his mother gently shook him awake.
"Baby boy, wake up na," she said. "Look outside."
"Mae, let me sleep for five minutes," he replied groggily.
"Gulf, we're almost landing, my son," his stepfather chimed in.
Gulf opened his eyes lazily and looked out of the aircraft window. The first thing he noticed was the lights illuminating the ground, stirring both excitement and fatigue within him. He had barely slept, having spent the night preparing documents for his transfer to a new university and packing, which he despised. All he wanted was a solid sleep.
It was dark outside by the time they landed. The flight from Koh Phangan to Bangkok took three hours, and Gulf was completely worn out from the travel. As they exited the airport, Gulf, Ampha, and Thanayong were greeted by Thanayong's men, who were waiting for them and quickly assisted with their bags.
Thanayong settled into the driver's seat while Ampha took her place behind him, and Gulf sat next to her, gazing out at the traffic and streetlights. Just as he was about to slip away, his father, Thanayong, suddenly asked, "Do you guys want to eat anything? We can get drive-thru food."
"I'm good, honey," Ampha replied.
"How about you, Gulf? Hungry?"
*Silence*
"Gulf, my boy, are you hungry?"
Gulf, jolted back to the present, tried to keep his composure despite hearing his father's suppressed smile in his voice, clearly enjoying the moment.
"I'm good, pho. Not hungry since I stuffed myself before the flight."
"Okay then, we'll head straight to the house," Thanayong said, unable to tease his son any further. He fell silent as he observed Gulf through the sunscreen's small attached mirror, who had his eyes still closed, attempting to fall asleep.
After their brief exchange, Gulf turned his head slightly toward the window, still keeping his eyes shut as he thought of his birthplace. He began to regret leaving Koh Phangan and missed his friends and professors, who felt like family.
Back in Koh Phangan, everyone knew Gulf as the cheerful, loud boy with a heart of gold. He was confident about his appearance, recognizing that he was well-built, unafraid to stand his ground when faced with trouble, and a bit hotheaded. As his mind wandered back to his last day in Koh Phangan, his mother gently shook his arm.
"Baby boy, we're here."
After a few hours of driving, they finally arrived at their new house, which meant a new university—something that annoyed him—and new friends, whom he suspected he would more likely make enemies with than friends.
Gulf, wanting to escape his reality, slowly opened his eyes, flooded with regret about leaving his hometown. He rubbed his eyes and looked out the window as he unbuckled his seatbelt and stepped outside, surveying the spacious, luxurious double-storey house.
He quickly grabbed his backpack but took a moment to scan the surroundings, greeted only by darkness. He let out a small sigh before he walked toward the front door, where his luggage was waiting for him.
Once inside the house, Gulf dragged his luggage to his designated room and did a quick scan of the space before dropping his things on the floor. He showered and got dressed without giving it much thought, and as soon as his head hit the fluffy pillow, he was out cold.
