A loud belch came out of Paula’s mouth as she finished off her meal. She quickly covered her mouth with her palms, face red in embarrassment, while she mumbled a ‘sorry’.
‘Like I haven’t sat down through countless munching of food and unintentional gas leaving her mouth.’ I thought as I rolled my eyes.
I might have sat through it all just because I have things to hear her say but seeing her eat so much with such a frail body sets fire into a part of me. Even Black, my wolf felt so contented watching her eat so much.
I called out for the janitor to come and clean up her mess and soon a young man walked in. Once he was done cleaning, he excused himself with a bow and went out the door. It was then that I fully turned to face Paula with a serious look on my face. It was time to get down to business.
“Now, tell me––”
“Gosh! I’m sorry! I need to use the bathroom!” She exclaimed, sending my words back down my throat and rushing past me, giving me no time to register what just happened. Before I could stop her, she was already going into the adjoining room in her hospital room that served as the bathroom and slammed the door shut. The act wasn’t one that I was buying and she knew I was bound to ask questions.
I waited for about thirty minutes and it was then that I knew that she was just stalling.
‘Great. She’s stalling…. again.’ I said sighing
At this rate, I might not be able to find out things in time to tender to the elders, and there’s no way I’m leaving here with a mate whose life I know nothing about.
If she had shown up as a regular mate––no previous mate, no markings, no trace of abuse, no suicide intentions, and definitely no pregnancy––things wouldn’t be as complicated as they were. Sometimes, I wish I knew why the moon goddess hated and had a thing for messing up my carefully planned life.
‘Damn! My patience is wearing thin, and it’s only a matter of time before I snapped’ I thought.
I knew even with that I couldn’t dare take it out on her.
What if she thinks I’m a monster? Like whoever caused those bruises on her body? I can’t bear to have such an impression on her. Yet, I was gradually losing it. It wasn’t up to a week yet that I met my mate and yet she was throwing me off the edge already.
As I was pondering on my next best action, my cell phone began to ring again.
‘What does Hawke want?’ I thought as I looked between my phone and the door Paula had locked herself in.
I sighed before coming to a compromise. I might as well go out to breathe in the fresh air, answer the call and take it all out on Hawke or maybe go running with Black into the woods till I finally collect my thoughts and return to my reluctant mate.
I turned to leave but stopped in my track when I heard faint retching sounds. I wouldn’t have picked it up if not for my superb enhanced hearing. It was also attributed to the fact that I and Black paid really close attention to Paula.
I rushed towards the bathroom door and started knocking on the door.
“Paula? Are you alright? What’s wrong with you? Open up” I said in a panicky voice.
I didn’t hear anything for a while and it made me start considering breaking down the door.
When I was about to rush forward and break the door, her voice rung out softly.
“I am alright and will be out in a minute. I was just feeling a bit of nausea. I will be fine after a bit of rest.”
I sighed in relief at that.
This was not the first time I had heard of nausea during pregnancy.
“Okay! Do tell me if you need anything. I want to quickly step out to take a call.” I said as I glanced at the phone that kept ringing incessantly.
I stared at the door another time as I felt like there was something off about the situation. I finally came to the decision to accept that it was nausea.
I walked out of the hospital room with that thought and closed the door behind me, ready to answer Hawke’s call inside the reception when I heard my name. I turned to see the pack doctor coming towards me.
When he reached me, he bowed, and I noticed he had a worried look on his face. He rarely brought any good news but the worry on his face gave me a bad feeling in the pits of my stomach. Something was definitely wrong and I hoped it was a situation I could bear at this moment.
“Is something wrong?” I asked with a strained voice.
I didn’t plan to sound that way at all but with all the emotions that had hit me today, I couldn’t help it.
“There’s something I need to tell you about……” he paused then nudged his head towards the door of my mate’s hospital room before he continued to say ” about her”
My heart dropped as I immediately began to think of the worst thing that could happen.
“Is something wrong with my mate? Is she sick? Damn! is it the pregnancy?” The questions flooded out before I could stop myself.
“If you will kindly follow me to my office Alpha Frankie, I will explain better” He said cutting off my questions. I couldn’t help the dread that enveloped me as my mind began conjuring up the worst possible scenarios.
I nodded, trusting his judgment and telling him to lead the way. After all, I already trusted him to keep the secret of my mate’s pregnancy and everything about her. Another secret won’t hurt anyone and I hoped it remained that way.
Once we got to his office, he immediately shut the door and offered me a seat. I took it and gestured for him to speak up.
He opened his phone scrolling through for a brief moment before passing it to me. I looked at him in confusion, looking down at his phone and what I saw made my blood turn cold.
