Paula
I sat by the chair and stared blankly out my bedroom window, thinking about how everything was such a mess and how my life became this complicated.
I let out a small sigh and rub my eyes, feeling a headache already forming.
A strong breeze blew into the room messing up my already messed up hair as if it didn’t already look like a bird’s nest before, I’m sure it does now. I run my hands through it in an attempt to tame it, I realized it wasn’t going to work so I give up with a small sigh.
I was pretty sure I was not crazy but I could’ve sworn I heard a sigh from somewhere in the room and with the things that have been going on lately, I was scared to look.
“Well, your attentiveness is next to zero, basically it’s shitty.” I jumped at the voice that suddenly resounded in the room.
I turned around and saw a woman was seated on the bed staring straight at me while smiling.
“With witches around, learn to keep your Windows closed.” She said and my eyes instinctively moved toward the window of my room.
Fear instantly gripped me and It took all the self-control I had not to screamed the top of my lungs.
“Hello Paula. It’s good to finally meet you.” She said with her a creepy smile and it sent chills down my spine, not out of fear but a feeling I’m not quite of.
“Who are you?” I asked my voice a bit shaky.
“Akayla,” She said before she paused for a bit and then continued, “I’m a friend.”
‘Yeah right, and my whole life is all rainbows and cotton candy.’ I thought sarcastically.
“Okay, bye.” I mutter with more confidence as I felt as if my fear had somehow dissassipate or maybe I was just tired and this is when I snapped.
I was so fucking tired of being pushed around like a fucking pet, like I couldn’t make my own decisions. I cursed Frankie for not letting me die that night, and I cursed Xayden too for getting me into this mess, my father and that bitch of a stepmother for basically selling me off. I fought off the tears that filled my eyes when I thought of the events that had taken place in my life over this period of time.
I think she saw the change in my eyes because she stood up from the bed and came to stand by me
“I’m a friend Paula, I promise.” She said as she raised her hands as if surrendering.
I didn’t spare her another glance though.
I refused to listen and got up just realizing that I was hungry and needed to grab a bite but her next words stopped me in my tracks.
“I have something to say to you about your birth mother”
I turned back to her, waiting for her to talk.
She took a deep breath before continuing
“It’s quite long so you might want to grab a chair.” She said.
I raised my brows, weighing my options, and came to a decision to listen to her as I wanted to hear what she knew about my supposed birth and origin.
“Don’t bother, someone is bringing up lunch.” She said and I was surprised she knew I was hungry.
“Where do I start?” She muttered to herself but I heard it.
“When Xayden came to me with the proposition of hurting you, I didn’t think much of it, heck I even wanted to do it but then I saw you and felt you. It was then that I knew that I couldn’t do it.” She said.
“What? Xayden came to you to hurt me? Who exactly are you and what were you supposed to do to me?” I asked as panic seeped in.
“I am a witch” she said and I gasped.
This was definitely not how I was expecting a witch to look like at all. I vaguely remembered her saying that I shouldn’t leave the windows open lest witches came in but my mind was not really on it. Now that I looked back, it dawned on me how stupid of me it was not to notice that she didn’t come through the door.
“Xayden had come to me to kill you in order to make Frankie suffer so he would give him the throne but I wasn’t able to do anything to you.” She said ad paused before she continued
“I couldn’t decipher why I felt that so I decided to do a little digging.” She said, her eyes focused on me. As she was about to continue, a knock came from the door and then it was pushed open.
An omega I had seen around here entered carrying a tray and I jumped up eagerly and took it from her. My stomach rumbled just on cue as if to indicate that it appreciated the food.
“Thank you,” I muttered embarrassingly as I dismissed her.
I sit back on the bed and fold my legs on the bed, happily munching on my sandwich. After a while, it clicked that Akayla had vanished from the bed and I started to wonder if the omega had seen her previously.
I looked around the room, sandwich in hand to see where she had gone but I couldn’t find her. She suddenly materialized before me like a ghost and I almost screamed and dropped my plate.
“Go on, continue eating your food.” She said as she sat down on the chair I was sitting on previously.
I obliged and started eating while also listening as she started to speak.
“Do you remember your mother?” she asked and I shook my head in a negative sign.
“I knew her and I have to say that she was a rare beauty.” She said with a tone I couldn’t really decipher.
“Were you close?” I asked, chewing my food slowly.
She nodded with somewhat of a bittersweet smile just as I was finishing off my sandwich. When I was done, I cleaned my hands with a napkin before setting the tray aside and focusing on her.
“Yes, we were close.” She looked sad but I didn’t really care how she was feeling as I just wanted to hear about my mother.
“We were related, not closely related but distant cousins of some sort, I never really cared to learn the relation because to us, family is family. Your mother Katya had escaped from the coven after a fight broke out. She went away and then fell in love with a trickster,” she said with a dark tone and a malicious aura I instantly noticed.
“It was after she left, we realized it was that man…that son of a bitch that tricked all of us into fighting. He earned the name trickster from us because no one noticed what he did to get Katya until she was long gone” Akayla said her tone dripping with sadness.
“He had killed someone from one of the first families and blamed it on Katya’s family so that when the war would break out, he would manipulate her into going with him” she said in fury.
“The elders in the coven then made a decision that in order for them to save her they would have to take away her powers as that was what that person wanted to use. He had wanted to bring her to the werewolf realm and use her powers to earn money.” She continued.
I felt as though a dark cloud had enveloped me hearing such things about my birth mother. My heart immediately went out to her, for all she had been through in the name of love.
“That was all the head of the witches planned to do and no one cared to find her. Our family felt betrayed that the elders would turn their backs on us in our time of need but they said they had done all they could by locking her powers, and that it was her own decision to run away with a werewolf.” Her voice was more bitter now.
It took me a while to grasp the fact that my mother was a witch.
She left their group which I guess was called coven with a trickster man she fell in love with, who turned out to be a werewolf and had framed her family for murder and wanted to use her in the werewolf realm for money. Her witch powers were locked to save her but the coven did nothing to look for her or bring her back because they felt she was the one dumb enough to run with away with a man she’s just met. I wonder where I came in. My father was human right?
So, was I a half witch?
“If she left with the werewolf trickster and they never looked for her, what happened to her? Is that human my father or the werewolf? How do you know all these?” I said bombarding her with questions.
She huffed and turned to me looking extremely irritated, I meet her stare dead on as I had decided to not let anyone walk over me again.
“If you’d let me finish.” She said as she rolled her eyes.
“She said she got tired of trying to use her powers and gave up, the man had been so angry she couldn’t do magic so he cast her out. When she realized that he didn’t love her for real, she ran away. She couldn’t find her way back to the coven and she certainly wasn’t going to stay with the werewolves. She wandered for a while before finding her way to the human realm and that’s where we met again.” She said a smile appeared on her features.
“She was a waitress in this small Inn I stayed at for a night. We weren’t that close when she was in the coven but I recognized her. She ran to me and said she’d thought she was seeing things when she saw me. She asked me to sit and wait for her as she would soon be done with her shift. I sat there and she poured me a hot cup of coffee with the best waffles I have ever had.” She said chuckling a bit and I couldn’t help but smile.
“When her shift was over, she told asked me to go with her to her apartment. It wasn’t much but it was the best thing for the both of us as we had fun and made a lot of memories. She narrated her whole tale to me that day and invited me to stay with her as long as I wanted to. Staying with each other for a while, we realized we had a lot in common and we realized it wasn’t only friendship that was between us. We realized we liked each other romantically and we accepted that we were in love with each other and later got married.” She said and my eyes widened in shock.
“You were a victim of rape by that human you call your father in that dingy old bar. He had caught her caught her on a late night and figured she was the best place to dump his sperm. I was furious and bashed him up but your mother told me to let him go and she decided to keep you. I also learned to accept you but when your mother died while giving birth to you, I lost all reason. Your mother had asked me to raise you but when she passed away, I gave you to the human out of spite.” She said as she stared at the floor in what looked like shame.
“So, when I sensed you, I knew I had to come and find you to make up for not honoring your mom’s last wish.” She finished with a solemn look.
When she finished telling me everything, I tried my best to process and digest everything. We sat down quietly for a while before she stood up, I thought she was going to leave but she came closer to me.
“I’m so happy we met, I’m sure Katya is happy too.” She said after she grabbed my hands and held them in her old and wrinkly ones.
“For Katya, I promise, I promise you I’ll do everything I can to get your powers back.” She promised with so much affection in her eyes before disappearing into thin air.
