“Anne?”
How the is this possible? Am I dreaming? What the hell is going on?
I rubbed my eyes and pinched my arm to confirm if what I was seeing was real.
I wasn’t dreaming so what the hell was going on? Wasn’t she supposed to be dead? I remembered that I had performed the cremation myself and her body had been burnt to a crisp.
I looked at her again and found that it truly was Anne and she was standing right in front of me.
“Anne! Oh my God. How are you still alive? ” I quizzed.
She stared back at me with quivering lips and tears in her eyes. Next thing I knew, she ran forward and hugged me tightly.
I was shocked but soon hugged her back.
“I can’t believe you are here Anne. I missed you so much. You don’t know how sad I was when I thought you were dead. I feel so happy to have you back after all these years.” I said as we embraced each other.
“K… Frankie!” She called out as she sobbed.
I disentangled myself from her embrace and looked her over.
She looked haggard, thin and bruised all over. Her body was a gruesome sight to behold but at least she was wearing good clothes.
“What happened? How are you still alive? Whose dead body was that?” I queried.
She didn’t reply and just kept sobbing uncontrollably.
I led her towards the sofa and sat her down before I proceeded to stroke her hair.
Soon the sobs stopped and she calmed down.
“What is going on?” I asked again.
“I.. I…. Frankie….. When you came to see me, I had hope that you would come back for me and that was the only joy i had. Xayden came shortly after you left and beat me Into a pulp for telling you that I and him were mates. He beat me till I blacked out and when I came to my senses, I was naked and alone in that dingy old cell.” She said while trembling uncontrollably.
“What? How dare he do that?” I yelled as I stood up abruptly.
“How could he do that to his own mate? This is utterly outrageous. He deserves to die for doing such a thing. I will make sure to murder him.” I yelled out furiously.
I felt Anne grab my hand and tugged it. I looked back at her and saw her cheeks wet with tears.
“Frankie! Please don’t take any rash decisions. I am his mate so he won’t be judged for treating me the way he wants to but you will be if you kill him. Society will term his treatment of me as a show of dominance over me but they will term your revenge as you commiting murder. Don’t throw away your life and your family just for me.” She said and I could see the deep plea in her eyes.
I sat back down and held her hands in mine. I felt excessively guilty at the fact that she had passed through all this suffering all these years and I wasn’t able to help her. I had something I was confused about though.
“Since you are here, whose body was that? Why did Xayden lie about your death to me? What did he stand to gain? Plus how did you escape his clutches?” I queried in confusion.
She sighed and looked away from me.
“At first, I was not aware of things that Xayden had done. I just knew one minute I was being brutally beaten and the next I was lying naked in an old dingy cell. It was after a day or so of almost dying from the cold that he turned up. He gave me pieces of rags to wear and scraps to eat so I wouldn’t die.” She said.
“It was then he told me that I should give up hope on you ever coming back to save me because I was dead to you. I didn’t believe him at first and I thought that he was just trying to get me to forget about you but he just chuckled and told me what he had done.”
“He said that he outsourced someone who had the same hair and build as me, killed them and then disfigured the girl’s whole body. He also said that the reason I was naked earlier was because they needed my clothes to make the evidence of my death more believable. He said that he had sent the body to you and you easily believed that I was dead.” She said with tears rolling down her face.
“I asked him why he didn’t just kill me and save the stress. He told me that my death would bring him a little pain seeing as we were mates and were already mated. He didn’t want to feel any pain whatsoever so he found a body double. He also said that It was fun watching you mourn someone you didn’t even know.” She sucked in air and continued.
“After that revelation, I was devastated and empty. I didn’t know how to continue living knowing that no one was ever coming for me. I wasn’t even able to die as my life was being controlled by Xayden. That all continued until yesterday when I ate the food someone strange brought for me. It was too tempting to resist as it was a far cry from the scraps I always had. After finishing the meal, everything went dark. I woke up to find myself at the border of your pack.” She narrated while staring blankly into space.
“I just walked towards here with the directions that I had in my memories. It was hard but I eventually got here.” She finished with teary eyes as she stared at me.
I tried to dilute all the information she just narrated to me. Everything was overwhelming and hard to comprehend.
Who was the strange person who saved her? Is this a plot devised by Xayden? If it is, what does he stand to gain from all this?
This was all so confusing.
I shook the questions from my head and focused on Anne. Immense guilt filled me as I thought of all she had gone through while I mourned over another person’s dead body.
I felt so stupid for not Investigating into the matter but I knew that the events that had happened over the past weeks wouldn’t have allowed me to.
Anne suddenly embraced me once again, dragging me out of my thoughts.
“Thank you Frankie. Thank for always loving and looking out for me.” She said in an emotional voice.
I wanted to reply but Paula’s voice echoed from behind me.
“What the hell is going on here?”
I looked down at Anne’s arms that was wrapped around my waist and back to Paula that was glaring at me with a hurt expression on her face.
Shit!
