                    Paula
“Paula! My child” the lady said.
“What the hell? Is this some sort of prank or joke?”
I had to ask as this was a situation inhad never expected.
If I remember correctly, I was no one’s child as my mom had long been dead. She may look like me but it was not logically possible that she was my mother.
“Who are you ma’am? Why are you referring to me as your child? My mom has been dead ages ago so you surely must be mistaken. If this is another ploy from them, then let me tell you that it won’t work as I am already aware of all your schemes. You won’t be able to manipulate me into doing anything” I said surprising myself and those in the room.
I had never spoken so harshly to anyone but I was angry at always being stomped on.
It was time I stood up for myself.
“What do you mean? Manipulating you? What schemes? Who are you talking about? I know you are angry at me for showing up now but I had a reason.” she said as she began sobbing hysterically.
I rolled my eyes at her dramatic behavior.
Those elders were turning way too desperate to be able to hire such a bad actress.
Did they think I was stupid? I might still currently be weak but I am not stupid in any way. I had come to respect my mother from all the stories I had heard about her and I wasn’t going to allow the elders to taint those memories.
“Please leave here ma’am.” I ordered before holding on to Frankie’s hand tightly and turning to leave
“Wait! Paula baby. I am your mother and I can prove it.” She blurted in obvious desperation.
I halted in my tracks and slowly turned around.
“Okay then. Prove it!”
“I have a birthmark the shape of a moon in the underside of my belly with an exact meaning. I had told my wife the meaning and you can ask her to confirm.”
“Your wife?”
That’s true! I could ask Akayla to confirm if what she was saying was correct. Why didn’t I remember her earlier?
I almost slapped a hand to my forehead but I caught myself.
“Wait! Who is your wife?” Frankie asked before I could get anything out.
Oh crap! I almost forgot that she cod be using reverse psychology to get answers out of me. I sure had a lot to learn but thankfully Frankie was here.
“Do you want me to really say it here?” She said as she looked around at the numerous werewolves in the room.
Frankie looked at all the people in the room and signalled for the strange woman to follow him.
He held my hand and pulled me in the direction of a room in I had never been before.
When we entered, I realized that it was a study, probably his.
I stood in the doorway for a bit and examined it
It was really…..big and …. Grey
That was the only thing I could think of as I gave it a once over. It read Frankie everywhere as it seemed like something that would be his.
There was a large mahogany table at the centre of the room. There was also a really large and towering bookshelf that was filled with books both new and old.
To the corner of the room was a sofa set and a small glass table set at the centre.
Frankie tugged at my hand and that snapped me out of my thoughts. I followed him to sit on the sofa with the woman on our tails.
He gestured for the woman to sit on the sofa facing us and she did.
“So who did you say you were and who was your wife?” Frankie asked while I stayed quiet by the side observing the woman’s expression.
“I said that I was Paula’s mother and my wife is Akayla.” She said confidently.
Oh! So she did know who my mother’s wife was. Anyone could know, most especially the elders of the witches coven who had been watching over my mother since the day she left the coven.
“Supposed to were truly Paula’s mother, can you explain why you were acclaimed to be dead and now you suddenly turned up here? Where have you been all this while? What proof asides that birth mark and the meaning behind it do you have to assure that you are her mother.”
“Well asides that, all I have are my memories together with Akayla. You can asked her to interrogate me with questions that only she and I would know. As for those other questions, I will answer them once my wife is here.”
My heartbeat sped up as I really considered what would happen if she was truly my mother. Does that mean she didn’t die? If she didn’t, then why did she abandon me and Akayla and dissappear? If she didn’t have a valid and reasonable explanation, I would throw her out of this house, mother or not.
“Well, if that is the case, I will get you to see Akayla and then she will be the judge of it all.” Frankie
What’s up I left the room and headed towards the room where Akayla was. I pushed the door open and Akayla was laying on the bed with her back turned to us.
“That was quick! I was thinking you would take an hour to deal with your surprise visitor and then another hour to eat each other’s face out before coming back.” She said while chuckling but she stopped when she found that no none was laughing along with her.
“Well you guys don’t have to be so serious. It is just an harmless joke on my side. Besides, you…..” She said as she turned to face us but soon trailed off and froze when she saw who we had behind us.
“What? What is going on? Am I dreaming or something? is this some sort of prank? Well if it is, I have to tell you guys that this is so not funny. Paula how would you play with your deceased mother’s memories like that? Wait though, I remember I never showed you a picture of how she looked like so how did you capture her entire face perfectly?” She babbled as she kept asking questions and answering it on her own.
“Well, we are not the ones who brought her here. She just suddenly showed up on my doorstep with the claim that she was Paula’s mother and your deceased wife.” Frankie chimed as he kept looking suspiciously at the unknown stranger.
“What? Who are you miss? How dare you try to taint the memories I have of my partner? Who exactly sent you? If it was the elders of the coven, tell them that their plans will never work. The fact that I love my wife does not mean I will swoon and drop to my knees at any lookalike they point to me. You people are just sick and twisted.” Akayla barked with fury in her tone.
“Agápi mou, Its me. I’m back” the woman cried out with tearful eyes.
For a moment Akayla froze and I could see that she almost gave in but then her frown deepened and she glared at the woman.
“So what? She called me that and anyone that watched us could find out.” Akayla snarled.
“I understand but you can ask me anything and I will answer according to my memories.” The woman replied.
“Okay then! If that is how you wanna play this game, the I’m all set.” Akayla said glaring at the woman.
She was obviously mad at herself for almost believing a phony.
“What is the birthmark Kayla had on her? when did she get it? Where was it located on her body? What was the reasoning behind it that she came up with? When did she inform me about it?” Akayla asked with a poker face
“Well, I have the birthmark the shape of the moon on the underside of my belly. I got it when I was 5 years old when a spell gone wrong by a random caster accidentally hit me. I was fine but I had this scar to prove it. I just told anyone who asked that it was a birth mark and that I got it when I was born. I told you about it on the morning of our wedding night. I also joked and said that the spell caster’s magic hit me on purpose due to me being so beautiful. You had laughed and said I was way to arrogant” the woman said with tears welling in her eyes.
I observed that Akayla had also started crying silently as she clutched on to the duvet tightly.
“K… kayla!” Akayla stammered out in a trembling voice as tears streamed down her face.
What? Was this woman truly my mother? What the hell was going on?
“Agápi mou, I missed you.” The woman said as she began to advance towards Akayla.
“Stop right there!” A voice resounded in the room loudly and the woman froze in her steps. Everyone turned to stare at me with a shocked look on their face and it was then that I realized that those words had come out from my mouth.
I stood in surprise for a moment but immediately caught myself.
“Even if what you say was the truth, do you think we are just going to accept you just like that? Where have you been all these years and why did you claim to be dead? If you cannot give a suitable answer, I won’t allow you to remain in this house any minute longer.” I said with a firm voice but my hands were clammy and sweaty and my heartbeat was speeding up erratically.
Frankie seemed to know that I was nervous and scared within so he held on to my hand tightly.
I still maintained my glare on the woman all throughout. She looked down at her hands and tears began to pour down from her face.
I raised an eyebrow at her when she refused to speak and kept sobbing. I wanted to ask her to keep talking but I felt a bit for her when I saw her tears.
“Are you not going to speak? Why do you keep crying?” Frankie said in stead of me. I was thankful he was able to guess what I wanted to say.
The woman or should I say, My mother, glanced at all our faces and sighed before she started speaking.
“I know that me showing up suddenly like this is not okay but I have my reasons.” She paused before she continued.
“I faked my death because I had made a deal with someone beforehand to do so”
What? She made a what now?
“I made a deal with Silas.”
I wanted to ask who Silas was but Akayla’s voice cut me off.
“What? Silas? Isn’t that the werewolf that we termed the deceiver those years ago? The one you supposedly fell for. The one who took you out of the coven to make you a source of money. The one you said abandoned you once the elders stripped you of your powers? Am I missing something? What the hell is going on?”
“What?” I blurted out.
What the fuck?
My mother made a deal with her captor?
